Renal cell carcinoma(RCC)is the most common tumor of the kidney in adults.The natural course of the disease is unpredictable.Prognosticators are vitally important for a rational approach to the management of RCC.Tumor markers provide not only prognostic information to aid in the identification of patients at risk for recurrence or metastasis but also could hold the key to targeted therapeutic interventions.The search for new tumor markers is useful to gain more insight into the unpredictable course of RCC and to supply information with regard to the molecular basis of the disease.This article presents an overview of tumor markers in RCC.
