Abstract:Radiation encephalopathy(REP) after radiotherapy was investigated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 84 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NC). The lesions were found mainly in the bilateral temporal lobes, brain stems and cerebella. In T1-weighted imaging(T1-WI), the foci with hypointensity were dominant(81. 3%) and in T2-WI all foci presented hyperintensrty. The occupying findings(OF) and atrophic findings(AF) constituted 27.4%and 9. 5% of all cases respectively. The differential diagnosis of REP from brain infarction(BI), brain stem gliomas and metastatic encephalomas was discussed. The authors classified the MRI of REP into 4 types: temporal lobes, brain stem, cerebellum and mixed ones. It is emphasized that MRI is superior to CT and other imaging techniques in REP, especially in revealing the foci of the brain stem, cerebellum and the fundal portion of the temporal lobes.
