Abstract: | During the last years the number of new developed devices for interventional closure of secundum atrial septal defects has increased considerably. Dealing with different implantation techniques and improvements in designs the spectrum of the various morphologies of secundum atrial septal defects suitable for device closure has consequently broadened. Therefor, the number of interventional closures of atrial septal defects raised with decreasing of surgical occlusions at the same time. The aim of this paper is to describe the different occlusion systems used for interventional closure of atrial septal defects in children at present time. We discuss the advantages and limitations of the different devices focussing the implantation techniques and the varying materials of the occlusion systems, placed for patients lifetime. Since different atrial septal defect occlusion systems are in use for the closure of differential defect sizes and morphologies at presence, further developments in design and material of the devices can be expected. |
