Abstract: | ![]() A questionnaire designed to investigate the incidence of newlyacquired, long-term backache was sent to women who had previouslyundergone manual removal of the placenta during a 12-month periodin one maternity hospital. There was a significantly greaterincidence of long-term backache in patients who had extraduralanaesthesia specifically for manual removal of the placentacompared with patients receiving a general anaesthetic for thesame procedure. The results of this retrospective study in asmall population warrant examination in a large, prospective, controlled investigation. (Br. J.
