Study on clinical value of prenatal screening to prevent birth defects

Objective To investigate the clinical value of prenatal screening to prevent birth defects.Methods Prenatal screening was performed in 3560 pregnant women.High risk rates for Down's syndrome,Edwards syndrome,and neural tube defects were compared among pregnant women aged 15-30 and 31-45 years.Results 3560 pregnant women were screened for 116 cases of high risk of Down's syndrome,20 cases of high risk of Edwards syndrome,and 28 cases of high risk of neural tube defects.The rates of high risk for Down's syndrome,Edwards syndrome,and neural tube defects in pregnant women aged 31-45 years were 5.1%,0.9%,and 1.3%,which were higher than 2.3%,0.4%,and 0.5%in pregnant women aged 15-30 years,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion Application of prenatal screening in birth defects examination can effectively determine the birth defects in the fetus,so that measures can be taken to deal with them,especially in the case of advanced maternal age,the use of prenatal screening can effectively reduce the rate of birth defects in the fetus,and it is worth to be widely promoted and used in clinical practice.
