Abstract:One hundred seventy human uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) clinical isolates were compared with 35 E. coli strains isolated from feces of a control group to determine the presence of the set1, sen and astA genes encoding the ShET-1, ShET-2, and EAST toxins, respectively. Overall, 27 (16%), 8 (8%) and 0 UPEC isolates presented the set1B, the astA, and the sen genes, respectively. This is the first time the set gene has been found in UPEC clinical isolates.
Keywords:Uropathogenic   Escherichia coli   Enterotoxins   Pathogenicity island
