Study on effects of maternal fever during pregnancy on the mode of delivery and pregnancy outcomes

Objective To determine whether or not maternal fever are associated with the choice of the mode of delivery and birth outcomes.Methods Maternal fever and other data about pregnancy in the study were interviewed from 6,845 pregnancies during January 2008 to June 2011.Case-control study was performed by selecting the 479 cases of maternal fever(≥38.5℃ and lasting for more than 24h) as high fever group,the 768 cases of maternal fever(<38.5℃ or lasting for less than 24h) as low fever group,and the 1,300 cases randomly selected from non-maternal fever pregnancies as control group.Logistic regression model was adopted in the analyses.Results The incidence of maternal fever during pregnancies was 18.22%.The findings showed that the incidence of cesarean section,threatened abortion,preterm labor,low birth weight,intrauterine growth retardation during fever groups,especially the incidence of neonatal asphyxia and neonatal malformation during high fever group,were significantly higher than that of control group.The results was the same even if the confounders were adjusted by Logistic regression model.Conclusion Maternal fever during pregnancy is a human teratogen.Women who experience fevers of 38.0 degrees C or higher for extended periods of time during pregnancy should be considered at increased risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes and should be provided appropriate counseling.
