The effect of dexmedetomidine on the quality of anaesthesia recovery in patients undergoing retroperitoneal laparoscopy

Objective To observe the effect of dexmedetomidine (DEX) on the quality of anaesthesia recovery in patients undergoing retroperitoneal laparoscopy. Methods Forty American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Ⅰ -Ⅱ patients were randomly assigned to two groups (n=20). Group D received DEX 0.5 μg/kg as bolus before induction and 0.4 μg·kg-1·h-1 by infusion. Group C received equal volume of normal saline as Group D without DEX. All other induction and maintenance drugs were same in both groups. All patients were sent to PACU after operation. HR, MAP, and SpO2 of each patients before anesthesia (T0) and when they arrived PACU (T1), opened eyes (T2), extubation (T3) and leave PACU (T4) were recorded.The numbers of patients who have nausea and vomiting or shivering during anesthesia recovery were also recorded. Results Time of extubation and PACU discharge time were similar in both groups. Compared with T0, MAP of Group D did not change significantly at T2 and T3, while MAP of Group C increased. The number of patient who have nausea and vomiting or shivering were significantly higher in Group C compared with that of Group D(30% vs 0% and 40% vs 10%, respectively). Conclusion DEX did not prolong the Time of extubation and PACU discharge time. DEX can decrease the incidence of nausea and vomiting or shivering during anesthesia recovery.
