Abstract:With the improvement and development of medical technology,the success rate of dental implant has become higher than before.However,implant failure still occurs from time to time,in which the early failure accounts for a large proportion.The implant itself as a foreign body,might provoke host immune response characterized as foreign body reaction.However,fiber encapsulation caused by excessive foreign body reaction and implant surface erosion can inhibit osseointegration,leading to early implant failure.As the most abundant cells in foreign body reaction,the activated macrophages are capable of polarizing to two mainly specific phenotypes with pro-inflammatory(M1)or anti-inflammatory(M2)by stimulation,which can not only regulate foreign body reaction but also affect bone tissue homeostasis.In this paper,the role of macrophages in osseointegration,fibrosis and foreign body giant cell formation will be expounded,aiming to guiding the clinical practice and reducing the early failure by regulating the biological behaviors of macrophages.
