Relationship of YKL-40 and lung disease

YKL-40 is named human cartilage glycoprotein-39 or chitinase-3-1ike-1,is secreted by some malignant cells such as breast cancer cells or neurospongioma cells and some non-malignant cells such as neutrophils or macrophages,contains a polypeptide chain composed of 383 amino acid residues, the gene is located on chromosome 1q31-32. YKL-40 is closely related to various lung diseases such as pneumonia,asthma,pulmonary sarcoidosis, lung cancer, while it plays a role in promoting inflammation,fibrosis,tissue remodeling, and tumor cell growth and apoptosis. This article reviewes the structure characteristics,biological functions of YKL-40 and the relationship with lung diseases.
