Abstract: | When cells are mixedly infected with two heat-defective (hd) poliovirus mutants at temperatures above those that are optimal for growth of these mutants, the virus yield is 4–14 times the sum of the yields of each mutant when grown separately under identical conditions (“leak” yields). The mixed infection yields are only one thousandth of the yield of wild type (hd+) under these conditions. The leak and mixed infection yields are 90–99% mutant rather than hd+, but only one of the mutants was detected in the mixed infection yields. Any rescue of the hd mutants by hd+ was too small to be detected. |
