Abstract:
In replacementexperiments L-tryptophan was rapidly metabolized by Candida guilliermondii, strain H17, cultivated before in a medium containing n-alkanes as sole carbon sources. After growth in a medium containing glucose tryptophan utilization was suppressed. Thin layer chromatography showed tryptophol as main metabolite. Kynurenine, anthranilic acid, and other substances of the aromatic pathway of tryptophan metabolism could not be detected. Feeding experiments showed a significant degradation of anthranilic acid, tryptamine, indolylpyruvic acid, and indolylacetic acid. As a metabolite of tryptamine utilization tryptophol has been identified. Degradation of formyl kynurenine and formyl anthranilic acid was within limits of error. Transamination and decarboxylation are discussed to be the primary reactions in the degradation of L-tryptophan under the conditions used in this study.
