Retrospective study on adverse reaction of central nervous system induced by foscarnet

Objective To analyze the adverse reaction of central nervous system induced by foscarnet and its influencing factors and prognosis.Methods The data of patients with adverse reactions of central nervous system induced by foscarnet in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed,and the demographic characteristics,clinical manifestations of adverse reactions,management and prognosis were analyzed.Results A total of 1296 patients were treated with foscarnet,and 15 patients had adverse reactions of central nervous system(1.15%);most of the adverse reactions occured in the use of foscarnet for 2~7 days.The clinical manifestations could be cramp,seizures,illusion,nonsense,drowsiness and headache.The adverse reactions mostly occurred in patients with renal impairment,electrolyte metabolic abnormalities and underlying neurologic disorders and those taking drugs that might cause adverse reactions of central nervous system.After foscarnet withdrawal and symptomatic treatment,the adverse reactions of the patients were improved.Conclusion Foscarnet may induce adverse reactions of central nervous system,and the clinical manifestations are various.The risk is greater in patients with AIDS than in those without AIDS,so we should pay more attention to the adverse reactions during application.
