Maxillofacial Injuries in Tibet Region

Objective： The purpose of this study was to analyze the epidemiologic features of maxillofacial injuries at a high altitude region in Tibet.Methods： An epidemiological retrospective study was statistically analyzed,with respect to gender,age,time distribution,causes,sites and type of fractures,accompanied injuries in 588 patients whom were treated from June 2001 to June 2010.Results： The incidence of maxillofacial injuries accounted for 26.4% of all in-patients,while the male to female ratio was 4.8∶1.Maxillofacial injuries appeared more frequently during May to October each year.The majority of patients were found between 21 and 50 years old.The most common cause of injury was traffic accident（48.8%）,and then followed by falling.The majority of patients（67.0%） were soft tissue injures.The bone fractures were frequently in the mandible（53.1%） while the most common site was the chin（43.1%）.Conclusions： Young men are mainly victims of maxillofacial injuries.Traffic accidents are the major cause of maxillofacial injures.Most of the injuries are soft tissue injures;mandible is the most commonly fracture site.The major accompanied injury,is brain injuries.
