DNA damage in mononuclear blood cells of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract:Alkaline electrophoresis of DNA in individual cells (the DNA comet method) showed that the mean DNA damage is increased in blood mononuclear cells and the proportion of cells containing damaged DNA is higher in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus than in healthy donors; the number of hypodiploid cells is increased, indicating intensified apoptosis.
