Second toe and composite tissues free transfers for the reconstruction of thumb including the first metacarpus in 10 patients

In the paper the results of the reconstruction for ten patients with the loss of thumb and first metacarpus are reported. All of the ten transplantations were successful and revealed fine recovery of the function and appearance. We considered the method of removing simultaneously second toe and metatarsal, the first web space of the foot, and the dorsal pedis flap to reconstruct the thumb and metacarpus, is superior in many respects to the traditional methods. Dissection and anastomosis additionally between the first plantar metatarsal artery and the distal end of the radial artery besides the anastomosis between the dorsal pedis artery and the proximal end of the radial artery are the effective manner to overcome ischemia of the transplants because of the variation of the first dorsal metatarsal artery.
