Research on the best timing of patient-controlled analgesia administration before the functional exercise among patients after elbow arthrolysis

Objective To investigate the effect of different time of patient - controlled analgesia （PCA） administration on pain relief before functional exercise among patients after elbow arthrolysis. Methods A total of 61 cases of inpatients were randoraly divided into 3 groups after the operation. The PCA admin- istration was used in all groups before the functional exercise every day. The time of giving the PCA in each group was different,within 10 minutes （group A） , 10 - 20 minutes （ group B） and more than 20 minutes （ group C） before the beginning of the functional exercise respectively. The pain levels of three groups were assessed and compared at the end of the functional exercise for three days, Results For the effect of pain relief, group B was significantly better than group A and group C （ P 〈 0.05 ） , and there was no significant difference between group A and group C （ P 〉 0.05 ）. Conclusion The best timing for the PCA administration is during the 10- 20 minutes before the functional exercise in patients after elbow arthrolysis.
