ObjectivesThe contemporary information on the prevalence of periodontitis and associated risk factors is deficient in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Our aim was to measure the prevalence of periodontitis and associated risk factors among the Saudi population in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia who visited the University Dental Hospital.MethodsIn this retrospective study, the demographic data and medical and dental records of 700 subjects were examined. Bitewing radiographs were analyzed to measure the alveolar bone loss in posterior teeth by measuring the distance between the cementoenamel junction and the crest of the alveolar bone. A chi-square test was performed to compare the severity of periodontitis. A comparison of multivariate mean bone loss was performed using a t-test. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the predictors of periodontitis. A P-value equal to or under 0.05 reflected statistical significance.ResultsAmong 700 cases, the patients’ mean age was 35.6 ± 12.1; 52.6 % were male and 47.4 % were female. Overall periodontitis prevalence was 52.1 %. The distribution of mild, moderate, and severe periodontitis prevalence was 36.1 %, 14.1 %, and 1.8 %, respectively. The severity of periodontitis was statistically similar between males and females (p = 0.148); however, significantly more Saudi than non-Saudi patients had moderate periodontitis. Higher proportions of severe periodontitis were seen in the age group of over 50-years-old (p < 0.001) and in patients with poor oral hygiene (p < 0.001), diabetes mellitus (p < 0.005), and hypertension (p < 0.002). Six total predictors of periodontitis were depicted, i.e., age > 50 years (OR = 3.73), poor OH status (OR = 2.24), BOP (OR = 3.35), presence of plaque (OR = 2.61), diabetes mellitus (OR = 3.19), and hypertension (OR = 3.62).ConclusionThe primary factors associated with the prevalence of periodontitis were age, nationality, diabetes, hypertension, BOP, plaque, and OH status. However, no association was observed between gender or cardiovascular disease and the prevalence of periodontitis in the studied population.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo determine the anti-inflammatory effects of green tea catechins in immortalized human gingival epithelial cells (Ca9-22) stimulated with Porphyromonas gulae lipopolysaccharide (LPS).MethodsCa9-22 cells were incubated with P. gulae LPS (10 μg/ml) with or without green tea catechins, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCg), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG), and epicatechin (EC) (each at 50 μM), for 6 or 24 h. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were used to determine the induction of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-ɑ), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and IL-8. Furthermore, the expression of toll-like receptors (TLRs) 2 and 4 was examined using real-time PCR and western blotting analysis, and phosphorylation of the p38 and ERK1/2 was examined using western blotting analysis.ResultsAt the mRNA and protein levels, EGCg, EGC, ECG, and EC were found to significantly inhibit COX2, TNF-ɑ, IL-6, and IL-8. Furthermore, the levels of ERK1/2 and p38 phosphorylation induced by P. gulae LPS were decreased following the addition of each of the catechins, as well as TLR2 and 4 mRNA and protein.ConclusionsThese findings indicate that green tea catechins are potent inhibitors of in?ammatory responses induced by P. gulae LPS, and may also be useful for prevention and/or attenuation of periodontitis.  相似文献

BackgroundPeriodontitis is associated with the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic plaque, and hypersensitive C reactive protein (hs-CRP) and lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) are the serum biomarkers of the stability of atherosclerotic plaque. Whether periodontitis is associated with the serum level of hs-CRP and Lp-PLA2 of acute ischemic stroke remains unclear.Material and MethodsWe recruited 103 cases with acute ischemic stroke within 7 days after stroke onset. Pocket depth and clinical attachment loss were assessed by oral examination to define the severe periodontitis. Demographic information including gender, age and body weight index, income level, education level, past medical history include smoking history, drinking history, ischemic stroke history, coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia were collected, and serum biomarkers including white blood cell (WBC), fibrinogen, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), lower density lipoprotein (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein (HDL-C), hs-CRP, HemoglobinA1c (HbAlc), Homocysteine (HCY) and Lp-PLA2 were tested.Results65 (63.1%) cases were diagnosed as severe periodontitis. Severe periodontitis group showed more male, age, drinking history, higher levels of hs-CRP and Lp-PLA2. Multivariate logistic regression showed that severe periodontitis was were significantly associated with hs-CRP (OR = 2.367, 95%CI: 1.182–4.738; P = .015) and Lp-PLA2 (OR = 2.577, 95% CI: 1.010–6.574; P = .048).ConclusionsSevere periodontitis is independently associated with the serum Level of hs-CRP and Lp-PLA2 in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Whether the improvement of periodontitis could decrease the occurrence and re-occurrence of ischemic stroke by stablizating atherosclerotic plaque need be further studied in future.  相似文献

Periodontitis, which is a chronic inflammation caused by biofilm from numerous gram-negative and -positive oral bacterial species between gingiva and tooth, is known to have a poor prognosis.Susceptibility of standard strains (19 strains) and clinical isolates (90 strains) of aerobic and anaerobic oral bacteria, including a recently recovered as novel pathogens for periodontitis called Filifactor alocis, was tested to minocycline (MINO) by using the agar dilution method according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute.MINO is a well-used therapeutic antibiotic for periodontits. In this study, minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of MINO against Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (n = 1), Porphyromonas gingivalis (n = 5), Prevotella intermedia (n = 1), Tannerella forsythia (n = 1) and F. alocis (n = 1), were 0.12, ≤0.016–0.03, ≤0.016, 0.03, and 2 μg/mL, respectively. MICs range of MINO against clinical isolates (10 isolates each) Streptococcus intermedius, P. gingivalis, P. intermedia, Fusobacterum nucleatum, Parvimonas micra were 0.06–16, ≤0.016–0.03, ≤0.016–1, ≤0.016–0.12, and ≤0.016–0.25 μg/mL, respectively. These results showed that MINO has superior in vitro activities against to known and recent recovered oral bacteria. Moreover, low prevalence in non-susceptible bacteria was observed to MINO.  相似文献

Background and aimType 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and Periodontitis (P) are prevalent multifactorial disorders worldwide, sharing a bidirectional relationship influenced by the genetic susceptibility of the host immune system. We investigated whether SNPs in the Interleukin 8 (IL8, alias CXCL8) gene could be associated with T2DM and Periodontitis.MethodsGenomic DNA was obtained from 874 Brazilian individuals divided into: Healthy group (n = 307), Periodontitis group (n = 334), and individuals affected by both T2DM and Periodontitis (T2DM_P) group (n = 233). The SNPs −251(T>A) rs4073, +396(T>G) rs2227307 and +781(C>T) rs2227306 were genotyped by TaqMan®. Multiple logistic regressions were used to determine the degree of association between polymorphisms (and haplotypes) with periodontitis and T2DM adjusted for known confounders.ResultsThe additive model revealed that the heterozygous AT(-251), GT(+396) and CT(+781) genotypes showed a lower risk for the diseased phenotypes, and carriers of the TTC/TTC haplotype were significantly susceptible to T2DM and Periodontitis concomitantly, as well to isolated Periodontitis (mainly the severe form).ConclusionsWe concluded, for the first time, that these functional CXCL8 SNPs, and the homozygous TTC haplotype are relevant genetic factors for T2DM and Periodontitis as comorbidities, as well as for severe Periodontitis susceptibility in Brazilian population.  相似文献
