A comparison of the academic impact of plastic surgery units in the United Kingdom and Ireland using bibliometric analysis

Academic output is just one aspect of a successful career as a plastic surgeon. However, for those with a strong interest in academia, the academic output of a department will likely be a key factor when deciding how to rank jobs. The aim of this study was to quantify and rank the academic output of plastic surgery units across the UK and Ireland. The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science Bibliometric analysis tool was used to collate cumulative (1950–2016), 10 year (2006–2016) and 3 years (2013–2015) research output data for plastic surgery units in the UK and Ireland. Sixty-six plastic surgery units were identified. Departments were ranked for each time period according to the number of papers produced, number of citations (Nc) and h-index (a measure of the impact of scientific output). The top 3 departments for number of papers in the last 10 years were The Royal Free Hospital, London (226) Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford (218), and Morriston Hospital and Swansea (188). The top 3 for h-number were The Royal Free Hospital (21) Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester (18) and Morriston Hospital (17). Academic output varies across plastic surgery units in the UK and Ireland. A number of departments have consistently maintained high academic outputs across the years and will be of interest to surgeons hoping to pursue a career in academia.     

Valorization of food processing wastes and by-products for bioplastic production

The global plastic production is reaching new altitudes every year. Growing production of petroleum-based plastics has incurred in disposal issues raising the concerns of plastic pollution and impact to the environment. These issues have encouraged innovation and research activities in the field of bioplastics, offering alternatives for conventional plastics. In recent years, global bioplastic production has also witnessed tremendous growth and expansion. Some of the main drivers of this growth are innovative biopolymers such as Polylactic acid (PLA) and Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). However, industrial expenses to produce bioplastics are much higher when compared to petroleum-derived plastics (e.g. industrial PHA production is estimated to be 5–10 times more expensive than petroleum-derived polymers). In this regard, globally many researchers have investigated for more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternatives to produce plastics. One potential option to pursue would be to explore agri-food wastes and by-products for bioplastic production. This would not only reduce the volume of wastes and by-products, but also production costs incurred. This review paper provides an overview of bioplastics, including production methods and possibilities of industrial food waste valorization for bioplastic production.

Draft genome sequence of plastic degrading Bacillus sp. AIIW2 isolated from the Arabian ocean

The endemic spread of plastic in the environment requires urgent need of a sustainable approach. Marine microbes found to have vast bioactivity and play a central role in biogeochemical cycling in the ocean; however, very few of them had been explored for biochemical cycling or plastic degradation. In the present study, we report the draft genome sequence of marine Bacillus sp. AIIW2 which was found to utilize plastic as a carbon source. The Bacillus sonorensis SRCM101395 was used as a reference genome for mapping the reads. The genome size of strain AIIW2 was approximately 4.4 Mb and composed of 4737 coding sequences with 45.7% G + C contents. The whole genome comparison of strain AIIW2 with three closest Bacillus strains showed strain specificity, the 16S ribosomal RNA sequence shows 99.93% similarity with Bacillus paralicheniformis KJ-16^T (KY694465). This genome data would provide the genetic basis in developing plastic bioremediation approaches and discover the enzymes pertinent in the biodegradation processes.     

Endoscope-assisted greater neurovascular palatal bundle release in cleft palatoplasty

Performing surgery in the oral cavity is difficult because of the limited view of the surgical field. Intraoral surgery for infantile oral disorders, such as cleft palate, is even more challenging. Endoscopy provides a minimally invasive approach and clear surgical view in surgeries with a constrained field of view. To date, very few reports have described endoscope-assisted palate surgery for children with cleft palate. At the authors’ institution, endoscopes have been used in primary palatoplasty using the double-opposing Z-plasty technique. A novel endoscope-assisted procedure is described herein, in which a dissection around the greater palatine neurovascular bundle is used to obtain tension-free closure of the palatal cleft. With this technique, it was possible to minimize the application of additional von Langenbeck-type relaxation incisions, which were previously introduced in most of our cases; the relaxation incision was successfully circumvented in 42.3% of cases. This led to lesser surgical interference, which possibly resulted in favourable palatal development. It was also found that the endoscopic procedure did not increase the operation time or blood loss when compared to those patients who underwent the non-endoscopic procedure. It is concluded that endoscopic guidance is quite useful in primary palatoplasty procedures with a constricted surgical view.     

微针在美容整形外科应用中的进展

微针技术近几年发展迅速,在美容整形外科应用广泛且相关种类繁多.基于这种情况,通过检索近几年国内外微针在美容整形外科应用的文献,分析了微针在皮瓣及皮片存活、瘢痕、面部年轻化、局部麻醉、脱发、皮肤松弛、痤疮、色素沉着等方面的应用现状,归纳出微针在该领域的应用的机制主要基于:微针能刺激表皮细胞和胶原的增生及微针能进行物质导入两方面.总结了微针使用过程中优点突出而不良反应较少的特点,展望了微针在美容整形外科中应用的美好前景.
