We present the fourth known case of endometrial carcinoma, and the second case of endometrial small-cell carcinoma, to be associated with paraneoplastic retinopathy. Initial symptoms were decreased visual acuity and a narrowing of the visual field. Endometrial carcinoma was diagnosed several months later. An antibody to 34-kDa bovine retinal antigen was detected in the patient's serum. Thus, autoimmunity was suspected as the cause of the retinopathy. In patients with endometrial carcinoma with visual disturbance of unknown cause, paraneoplastic retinopathy should be suspected. 相似文献

Since complement activation is recognized as a common response of the host defense system when an artificial medical device is applied to a patient, great effort has been devoted to studies on the interaction of the complement system with artificial materials. However, some uncertainties remain, partially because of the lack of well characterized surfaces and suitable analytic methods for study of the surface phenomena that occur on artificial materials under physiologic conditions. In this study, we employed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique to study interactions of the serum complement with well characterized surfaces. Self-assembled monolayers carrying various concentrations of hydroxyl groups were prepared using 11-mercapto-1-undecanol (C11-OH) and one of n-nonanethiol, n-dodecanethiol, and n-hexadecanethiol. The amount of NHS deposition on the SAMs increased with increasing C11-OH content of the SAMs, and the amount of anti-C3b antibody immobilization formed on the NHS deposition layers increased with increasing C11-OH content of the SAMs. These results clearly demonstrate that a large amount of C3b, produced through the activation of the complement system, binds covalently to and is adsorbed by hydroxyl-group-rich surfaces. The combination of SAMs and the SPR technique is suitable for studying the interaction of the complement system with solid surfaces, and the results should give basic information needed for a rational design of biocompatible surfaces on synthetic materials. 相似文献

Citrin is a mitochondrial aspartate glutamate carrier primarily expressed in the liver, heart, and kidney. We found that adult-onset type II citrullinemia is caused by mutations in the SLC25A13 gene that encodes for citrin. In this report, we describe the frequency of SLC25A13 mutations, the roles of citrin as a member of the urea cycle and as a member of the malate-aspartate shuttle, the relationship between its functions and symptoms of citrin deficiency, and therapeutic issues. 相似文献

Kanagawa phenomenon-positive strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus contain two copies of the tdh gene (tdh1 and tdh2) encoding thermostable direct hemolysin (TDH). Previous studies suggested that the tdh2 gene, but not the tdh1 gene, was responsible for production of extracellular TDH. In this study, a tdh2-deficient isogenic mutant of Kanagawa phenomenon-positive strain AQ3815 was constructed by a suicide vector-mediated in vivo recombination method. The intact tdh1 gene in the mutant contributed little to Kanagawa phenomenon on Wagatsuma agar but produced TDH in broth media, accounting for 0.5–9.4% of total extracellular TDH of AQ3815. 相似文献

Alopecia is one of the common symptoms after high-dose radiation exposure. In our experiments, neonatal mice that received 7 Gy X-ray exhibited defects in overall hair growth, except for their cheeks. This phenomenon might suggest that some substances were secreted and prevented hair follicle loss in the infant tissues around their cheeks after radiation damage. In this study, we focused on exosome-like vesicles (ELV) secreted from cheek skin tissues and back skin tissues, as control, and examined their radiation protective effects on mouse fibroblast cell lines. We observed that ELV from irradiated cheek skin showed protective effects from radiation. Our results suggest that ELV from radiation-exposed cheek skin tissue is one of the secreted factors that prevent hair follicle loss after high-dose radiation. 相似文献

Objective Owing to advances in direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy, a considerable number of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are now able to achieve a sustained viral response (SVR) after curative treatment of HCC. However, the beneficial effect of a DAA-SVR on the survival remains unclear. Methods A total of 205 patients with HCC who were HCV-positive with Child-Pugh A at the onset from 2008 to 2018 were categorized into 2 groups: 140 patients untreated for HCV throughout the entire course after HCC development (untreated group) and 65 patients treated for HCV with DAAs following HCC treatment who achieved an SVR (SVR group). After propensity score matching, 63 patients from each group were selected. Using these patients, the survival and maintenance of Child-Pugh A after HCC treatment were compared between the untreated group and SVR group. Results There was a significant difference in the overall survival (p<0.001) and the rate of maintaining Child-Pugh A (p<0.001) between the groups. The 5-year survival rates were 96% (SVR group) and 60% (untreated group), and the proportions of patients with Child-Pugh A at 5 years after HCC treatment were 96% (SVR group) and 38% (untreated group). Conclusion In patients with HCV-positive HCC, achieving a DAA-SVR after HCC treatment significantly improved the overall survival rate compared with HCV-untreated patients. The contribution of DAA-SVR during the course of HCC treatment to a longer survival is mainly due to the prevention of the progression of Child-Pugh A to B/C. Further research is needed to determine whether aggressive antiviral therapy is also effective for HCC patients with Child-Pugh B/C. 相似文献

While the aetiology of asthma is unclear, the onset and/or exacerbation of asthma may be associated with respiratory infections. Virus-induced asthma is also known as virus-associated/triggered asthma, and the reported main causative agent is rhinovirus (RV). Understanding the relationship between viral infections and asthma may overcome the gaps in deferential immunity between viral infections and allergies. Moreover, understanding the complicated cytokine networks involved in RV infection may be necessary. Therefore, the complexity of RV-induced asthma is not only owing to the response of airway and immune cells against viral infection, but also to allergic immune responses caused by the wide variety of cytokines produced by these cells. To better understand RV-induced asthma, it is necessary to elucidate the nature RV infections and the corresponding host defence mechanisms.
