Neisseria gonorrhoeae quickly develops drug resistance. Time-kill curves revealed that EDTA and TOL-463 inhibit growth similar to penicillin, ciprofloxacin, and azithromycin. Furthermore, synergistic and additive antimicrobial interactions occurred when EDTA and TOL-463 were combined with penicillin or azithromycin, respectively, suggesting that further investigations into these unconventional antimicrobials may be advantageous. 相似文献

Sleep problems increase with ageing. Increasing evidence suggests that sleep problems are not only a consequence of age‐related processes, but may independently contribute to developing vascular or neurodegenerative brain disease. Yet, it remains unclear what mechanisms underlie the impact sleep problems may have on brain health in the general middle‐aged and elderly population. Here, we studied sleep's relation to brain functioning in 621 participants (median age 62 years, 55% women) from the population‐based Rotterdam Study. We investigated cross‐sectional associations of polysomnographic and subjectively measured aspects of sleep with intrinsic neural activity measured with resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging on a different day. We investigated both functional connectivity between regions and brain activity (blood‐oxygen‐level‐dependent signal amplitude) within regions, hierarchically towards smaller topographical levels. We found that longer polysomnographic total sleep time is associated with lower blood‐oxygen‐level‐dependent signal amplitude in (pre)frontal regions. No objective or subjective sleep parameters were associated with functional connectivity between or within resting‐state networks. The findings may indicate a pathway through which sleep, in a ‘real‐life’ population setting, impacts brain activity or regional brain activity determines total sleep time. 相似文献

AbstractObjective: Online videos are commonly used in medical education. The aim of this review was to investigate the role of online instructional videos in teaching procedural skills to postgraduate medical learners.Methods: This systematic narrative review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, ERIC and Google Scholar were searched. Full texts that applied to online videos, postgraduate medical learners and procedural skills were included without language restrictions. The methodological quality of the studies was evaluated using a validated tool. A thematic analysis of the studies was carried out using a general inductive approach.Results: A total of 785 articles were retrieved and the full text was reviewed for 66 articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study. Twenty papers that were relevant to the role of online videos in postgraduate medical education of procedural skills were used for this review. They were heterogenous in the outcomes collected and the evidence was of variable quality. There was strong evidence for the use of online videos for procedural skill knowledge acquisition and retention. Online videos were used for various purposes, such as supervision, assessment, postoperative debriefing, providing feedback, and promoting reflection.Conclusion: Online videos are a valuable educational tool especially for procedural skill knowledge acquisition and retention. Future research needs to be carried out on the appropriate use of platforms in disseminating and using online videos, identifying the factors surrounding the learners, video characteristics, and data protection. 相似文献

ABSTRACTBordetella avium (BA) is a respiratory pathogen of particular importance for turkeys. Specific adherence and damage to the respiratory epithelia are crucial steps of the pathogenesis, but knowledge about the mechanisms and the variety of virulence in field strains is limited. We analysed 17 BA field strains regarding their in vitro virulence-associated properties in tracheal organ cultures (TOC) of turkey embryos, and their genetic diversity. The TOC adherence assay indicated that BA field strains differ considerably in their ability to adhere to the tracheal mucosa, while the TOC ciliostasis assay illustrated a high degree of diversity in ciliostatic effects. These two virulence-associated properties were associated with each other in the investigated strains. Three of the investigated strains displayed significantly (P?>?0.05) lower in vitro virulence in comparison to other strains. Genetic diversity of BA strains was analysed by core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST). We applied a cgMLST scheme comprising 2667 targets of the reference genome (77.3% of complete genome, BA strain 197N). The results showed a broad genetic diversity in BA field strains but did not demonstrate a correlation between sequence type and virulence-associated properties. The cgMLST analysis revealed that strains with less marked virulence-associated properties had a variety of mutations in the putative filamentous haemagglutinin gene. Likewise, amino acid sequence alignment indicated variations in the protein. The results from our study showed that both adherence and ciliostasis assay can be used for virulence characterization of BA. Variations in the filamentous haemagglutinin protein may be responsible for reduced virulence of BA field strains. 相似文献
