Australia has a unique collection of native fauna, which is often threatened by physical harm or the destruction of its habitat and conservation of endangered species is a primary concern. Investigation of the recent deaths of Bettongs in Lincoln National Park, South Australia was undertaken by the Forensic Odontology Unit, Adelaide University to determine the likely perpetrator. Atherosclerosis is a type of cardiovascular disease which may cause stroke. It is due to the deposition of fatty plaque in the artery walls resulting in the reduction of elasticity gradually and hence restricting the blood flow to the heart. Hence, an early prediction of carotid plaque deposition is important, as it can save lives. This paper proposes a novel data mining framework for the assessment of atherosclerosis in its early stage using ultrasound images. In this work, we are using 1353 symptomatic and 420 asymptomatic carotid plaque ultrasound images. Our proposed method classifies the symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid plaques using bidimensional empirical mode decomposition (BEMD) and entropy features. The unbalanced data samples are compensated using adaptive synthetic sampling (ADASYN), and the developed method yielded a promising accuracy of 91.43%, sensitivity of 97.26%, and specificity of 83.22% using fourteen features. Hence, the proposed method can be used as an assisting tool during the regular screening of carotid arteries in hospitals.

Three metal tolerant Serratia spp. isolates from sediments of pre-mined uranium ore deposit of Domiasiat, Meghalaya, India were characterized using morphological, biochemical and molecular methods. 16S rRNA gene analysis of the isolates identified one of the isolates (DB-10) as Serratia nematodiphila with 99.33 % pairwise similarity whereas remaining two isolates (DB-11 and DB-15) showed similarity with Serratia marcescens subsp. sakuensis with similarity of 98.78 and 99.54 % respectively. Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence-based PCR (ERIC-PCR) studies of the isolates revealed genetic diversity among them. The isolates were found to tolerate all the five tested metals namely, uranium, cadmium, copper, zinc and lead and also could resist nine commonly used antibiotics namely, ampicillin, kanamycin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, gentamicin, aztreonam, tetracycline, imipenem and ciprofloxin. All the three isolates were found to be superior in tolerance and resistance to the reference strain S. marcescens ATCC13880. The isolates showed high efficiency of uranium (VI) removal ranging from 90 to 92 % (21.4–21.9 mg/L) and from 65 to 70 % (309.4–333.2 mg/L) when challenged with 100 μM (23.8 mg/L) and 2 mM (476 mg/L) uranyl nitrate solutions respectively within 1 h of incubation.  相似文献

DICOM viewers must fulfill roles beyond primary diagnostic interpretation, including serving as presentation tools in teaching and multidisciplinary conferences, thereby enabling multiple individuals to review images collaboratively in real time. When in-person gathering is not possible, a variety of solutions have been deployed to maintain the ability for spatially separated users to view medical images simultaneously. These approaches differ in their backend architectures, utilization of application-specific optimizations, and ultimately in their end user satisfaction. In this work, we systematically compare the performance of conventional screensharing using a videoconferencing application with that of a custom, synchronized DICOM viewer linked using Web Real Time Communications (WebRTC) technology. We find superior performance for the WebRTC method with regard to image quality and latency across a range of simulated adverse network conditions, and we show how increasing the number of conference participants differentially affects the bandwidth requirements of the two viewing solutions. In addition, we compare these two approaches in a real-world teaching scenario and gather the feedback of trainee and faculty radiologists, who we found to favor the WebRTC method for its decreased latency, improved image quality, ease of setup, and overall experience. Ultimately, our results demonstrate the value of application-specific solutions for the remote synchronized viewing of medical imaging, which, given the recent increase in reliance on remote collaboration, may constitute a significant consideration for future enterprise viewer procurement decisions.

BACKGROUND: Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is found in association with triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and is the ligand for the removal of these particles from the plasma. Genetic variations in exon 4 lead to three common gene variants: E2, E3, and E4. METHODS: We performed apoE genotyping in 765 individuals with type 2 diabetes. RESULTS: We identified three new variant heteroduplex patterns. Sequencing of these variants revealed three novel mutations that were related to biochemical and clinical characteristics. One mutation produced a frameshift at amino acid position 166, which predicted termination of protein synthesis. This individual had a heteroduplex pattern and sequence of E3E3, which was associated with a change in the plasma isoelectric focusing pattern and a 70% lower plasma concentration of apoE compared with healthy individuals. The other mutations were both single base changes. A CGC>CAC change at amino acid position 150 predicted a substitution of Arg>His. This individual had a heteroduplex pattern and sequence of E2E2, which was not associated with major changes in plasma lipids or apoE concentration. The third individual had a CGC>CCC base change at amino acid position 114, which predicted an Arg>Pro change. This person had a heteroduplex pattern and sequence of E3E3, higher plasma total cholesterol, and moderately decreased plasma apoE. CONCLUSIONS: The frequency of new mutations in this sample (1 in 255) is higher than that of a healthy population (1 in 7900). Further screening for common apoE gene variants in individuals at risk for dyslipidemia may reveal abnormal heteroduplex patterns and uncover further mutations in this important lipid-regulating gene.  相似文献

Ceftriaxone in short courses has emerged as an effective alternative to chloramphenicol for the treatment of typhoid fever. To study the pharmacokinetics of ceftriaxone in acute typhoid fever, 10 febrile Nepalese adolescents and young adults with blood culture-positive illness were treated with 3 g of ceftriaxone (intravenous infusion for 30 min) daily for 3 days. On the 1st and 3rd day of treatment, blood and urine samples were collected at defined intervals for measurements of drug concentrations. Kinetic parameters including concentrations at the end of infusion (Cmax) and 24 h after the end of infusion (Cmin), elimination half-life (t1/2), area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC), total plasma clearance, renal clearance, percentage excreted in urine, and volume of distribution were estimated. On day 1, mean values were as follows: Cmax, 291 micrograms/ml; Cmin, 21.7 micrograms/ml; plasma t1/2, 5.2 h; AUC, 1,428 micrograms.h/ml; total plasma clearance, 37 ml/min; renal clearance, 19 ml/min; percentage excreted in urine, 49.7%; and volume of distribution, 16.1 liters. Mean values on day 3 were not significantly different from those on day 1. Compared with published values for healthy volunteers who received the same dose, our mean t1/2s and AUCs were lower and our mean total plasma clearances, renal clearances, and volumes of distribution were higher. The good clinical responses of these patients to therapy and the adequate Cmins support the use of ceftriaxone once daily for the treatment of typhoid fever.  相似文献
