This article examines the distribution of positive blood alcohol levels (BALs) among emergency room patients and the relationship between intoxication and other variables. Approximately one-quarter of the 640 subjects had positive blood alcohol levels and 16.3% had BAL readings above 0.10%, the legal limit for operating a motor vehicle in most states. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analysis indicated a significant relationship between employment status, gender, educational attainment, age and BAL. There were no significant racial differences. Analysis of the role of the presenting problem with BAL revealed that being involved in an accident was significantly predictive of a high BAL in a multivariate context. However, patients presenting with psychiatric problems had overall higher levels of intoxication than other patients. Leukotriene (LT) receptors in the guinea-pig ileum were characterized using LTB4, LTC4, LTD4 and LTE4 and the LT antagonists FPL 55712, ICI 198615 and (+/-)SKF 104353. LTB4 was inactive but the other LTs induced concentration-related contractions. LTC4 responses differed to those induced by LTD4 or LTE4. Inhibitors of LT metabolism had no significant effects on any LT responses. LTD4 contractions were inhibited by all three antagonists but a resistant response was apparent at concentrations of ICI 198615 greater than 10(-8) M. All three antagonists were weak/inactive against LTC4. LTE4 was a partial agonist which antagonized LTD4 responses but had little or no activity against LTC4 or histamine. These results suggest that two distinct LT receptor types exist on guinea-pig ileum. One type is predominantly activated by LTD4 and is antagonized by three structurally distinct LT antagonists and the partial agonist LTE4. Thymidine kinase (TK) exists in two forms, TK1 and TK2. TK levels and oestrogen receptor status (OR) were measured in tumours from 86 patients with operable breast cancer and the patients were monitored for recurrence over 24 months. During the monitored period, 13 patients showed recurrence. These patients also exhibited higher total TK levels per mg tumour (P < 0.01) and higher TK1 levels (P < 0.001) than those who did not show recurrence. TK1 levels relative to TK2 were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in OR-negative tumours (n = 29) than in OR-positive tumours (n = 57). OR-negative (n = 9) and OR-positive (n = 4) patients who recurred had significantly higher TK1 levels relative to TK2 than did those who not recur (n = 20 and n = 53, respectively). The modulation of drug metabolising enzymes by Masheri extract (ME) and Benzo(a)Pyrene [B(a)P] was studied in male Sprague Dawley rats fed different dietary protein levels. Two groups of 21 days old male Sprague Dawley rats were put on a high protein diet (SHP) with 20% Casein, and a low protein diet (SLP) with 3% Casein semisynthetic based diets for 12 weeks. The SLP fed animals showed lower basal levels of the Phase I activating enzymes viz. Cytochrome P450, Benzo(a)Pyrene hydroxylase, Benzphetamine demethylase and Phase II glutathione detoxification system viz. Glutathione (GSH) and Glutathione-S-transferase. ME and B(a)P treatment significantly depleted the glutathione detoxification system in the SLP group whereas an opposite effect was observed in the SHP group. Interstingly, ME and B(a)P treated rats in the SLP group showed a higher percent increase in the hepatic and pulmonary Phase I enzyme activities than those observed in the treated ME/B(a)P treated SHP rats. Furthermore, both ME and B(a)P significantly decreased the hepatic pool of vitamin A while a concomittant increase in that of vitamin C was observed. 相似文献

Classical and anaplastic seminoma are traditionally treated with radiation therapy and are said to have the same prognosis. A retrospective study was undertaken of 90 seminoma patients treated with radiation therapy between 1961 and 1985. The classical group consisted of 71 patients of whom 50 had stage I and 21 had stage II disease. The anaplastic group consisted of 19 patients of whom ten had stage I and nine had stage II disease. The median follow-up time was 64 months for the entire group. The 10-year relapse-free survival rate for the classical group was 94% and for the anaplastic group was 70% (P less than .05). For patients with classical stage I disease, the relapse-free actuarial survival rate was 98%; for patients with anaplastic stage I disease, it was 64% (P less than .02). For the classical stage II disease group, the relapse-free actuarial survival rate was 84% and for the anaplastic stage II disease group, 75% (P less than .70). Four patients in the classical group (6%) had relapses; of these, one patient had local recurrence of tumor, and three had distant metastases. In the anaplastic group, four patients (21%) had relapses; two patients had local recurrence of tumor, and two had distant metastases. The effects of isometric contraction (66% of maximal force) and recovery on glycogen synthase fractional activity (GSF) in human skeletal muscle have been studied. Biopsies were taken from the quadriceps femoris muscle at rest, at fatigue and 5 min postexercise on two occasions: after one of the contractions, the circulation to the thigh was occluded during the 5 min recovery (OCC), and after the other contraction, the circulation was intact (control, CON). During CON, GSF decreased from (mean ± SE) 0.34±0.05 at rest to 0.24±0.02 at fatigue and then increased to 0.74±0.04 at 5 min postexercise; corresponding values for OCC were 0.37±0.04, 0.25±0.04 and 0.48±0.05 (P<0.001 vs. CON for 5 min postexercise only). Compared with the value at fatigue, protein phosphatase activity (PP) increased by 79±16% during CON recovery (P<0.01), whereas no change was observed during OCC recovery. Uridine diphosphate glucose increased by approximately 2.5-fold at fatigue, remained elevated during OCC recovery, but reverted to the preexercise level during CON recovery (P<0.001 vs. OCC recovery). Glucose 6-P increased approximately 5-fold at fatigue and was higher at 5 min postexercise in OCC vs. CON recovery (8.6±1.5 vs. 4.1±0.9 mmol/kg dry wt; P<0.01). It is concluded that the rapid increase in GSF after intense exercise with an intact circulation may be at least partly attributed to an increase in the specific activity of PP. The increase in GSF during recovery in OCC may be at least partly attributed to the high glucose 6-P content in vivo, which enhances the substrate suitability of GS for PP. Thus, separate mechanisms exist for the activation of PP and GS during recovery from intense short term exercise. 相似文献
