Fatal pulmonary edema and hemorrhage are significant complications of endovascular treatment in steno-occlusive carotid artery disease; a rational mechanism has not been adequately examined in the literature so far. We investigated if cervical sympathetic ganglia ischemia prevents pulmonary vasospasm on the prognosis of bilateral common carotid artery ligation (BCCAL). Twenty-three adult New Zealand rabbits (4.2 ± 0.3 kg) were randomly divided into three groups: the control group (G1, n = 5), the sham group (G2, n = 6), and the BCCAL group (G3, n = 12). Common carotid arteries were dissected bilaterally in G2/G3, and permanent BCCAL was applied to only in G3. All animals were followed for 3 weeks and decapitated under general anesthesia. Histopathological changes in stellate ganglia and severity of pulmonary vasospasm-related lung edema and hemorrhage were investigated. Results were analyzed by the Kruskal–Wallis test. Two animals of G3 dead within three weeks and the remainder were sacrificed three weeks later. Subpleural petechial foci and an endotracheal bloody fluid collection were grossly observed in the lungs. Histopathologically, pulmonary artery vasospasm, perivascular and subintimal edema, interalveolar hemorrhage, and alveolar wall destructions were observed with less ischemic-degenerated neuron density-determined stellate ganglia animals. Neurodegeneration of stellate ganglia may have a beneficial effect on the prevention of lung injury during steno-occlusive carotid artery disease.  相似文献

The maxillary sinus floor elevation procedure has gained popularity with predictable results, and is a safe, acceptable technique for bone augmentation, providing a base for dental implant treatment. Faint radiopaque lesions at the base of the maxillary sinus are frequent diagnoses on radiographs and must be identified during dental implant planning. Pseudocysts classically appear hemispheric, homogeneously opaque, and well delineated in panoramic and periapical radiographs. The great majority of these lesions are asymptomatic and do not require surgical treatment. In this case report, we present 4 patients who had a maxillary sinus floor elevation procedure using either crestal or lateral approaches in the presence of antral pseudocysts. No complications were encountered during follow-up periods in these patients and all implants are functioning successfully.  相似文献

The maxillofacial region is affected by a greater number of cysts than any other part of the body. In this study, 90 odontogenic cysts were collected from 90 patients over a five-year period. Patients with radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts and odontogenic keratocysts were further analyzed with regard to age, sex and anatomical distribution. Using the histological classification of the World Health Organization, 53 cases (59%) were classified as radicular cysts, 24 (27%) as keratocysts and 13 (14%) as dentigerous cysts. Radicular cysts occurred most frequently in the anterior region of the maxilla, odontogenic keratocysts in the ramus and angular region of the mandible, and dentigerous cysts in the mandible. No recurrences were observed during the limited follow-up period.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: During the assessments made at presurgical, surgical, and follow-up phases, the clinician may benefit from a wide array of clinical and/or image-based measures. Because analysis of the potential associations among the various measures could improve the evaluation process for dental implants, this study attempted to determine the potential correlations among peri-implant sulcus fluid (PISF) volume, implant stability, nitric oxide content of PISF, and marginal bone loss. METHODS: Seventeen completely edentulous patients seeking prosthetic rehabilitation were included. Two ball attachment mandibular overdentures were given to all patients, and early- (N = 18) and delayed-loaded (N = 16) dental implants were compared during 24-weeks of follow-up. Resonance frequency analysis (RFA), marginal bone level, and PISF samples were taken for all dental implants. RESULTS: A consistent and negative correlation was observed between RFA measurements and marginal bone level, whereas some correlations also existed between RFA and PISF volume. The pattern of loading seemed to affect the relationship between RFA measurements and marginal bone level and, to a limited extent, the association between PISF volume and nitrite levels. CONCLUSIONS: Where the potential associations among various implant-related measures are concerned, the factors that may affect such associations (e.g., healing and loading) need to be considered. Data arising from the analysis of the associations between the wide arrays of available implant-related measures may improve dental practitioners' assessment concerning endosseous dental implants.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of nickel in orthodontic treatment-induced gingival hyperplasia. The nickel concentration in gingival tissues with and without overgrowth, histopathology of gingival overgrowth, and epithelial cell proliferation response to different nickel concentrations were analysed. Ten patients receiving orthodontic therapy (eight females and two males, mean age 15.4 years) were included in the study. Hyperplastic and healthy gingiva samples were collected from the same patients. The amount of nickel in the gingival tissue samples was analysed using the atomic absorption spectrometry technique. The tissues removed from hyperplastic areas during gingivectomy were also used for histological analysis. To analyse the effect of nickel on epithelial cell proliferation, four different nickel concentrations (0.5, 2, 5, and 10 microg) were incubated with keratinocyte cells for 11 days. Mann-Whitney U-test, analysis of variance, and Tukey's test were used in the statistical analyses. The results did not show any difference in nickel concentration between the study and control gingiva tissue samples, but histological analysis demonstrated an increase in epithelial thickness and a significant increase (P = 0.031, 0.02, 0.02) in epithelial cell proliferation in response to low-dose nickel concentrations, with a toxic response to a higher dose. In the limitations of this study, it is plausible that the effect of a continuing low-dose nickel release to epithelium is the initiating factor of gingival overgrowth induced by orthodontic treatment.  相似文献

The main principle of reconstructive surgery is replacement of the defective tissues with like tissues. A full-thickness defect of the nasal ala should be reconstructed in three layers: innermost mucosal layer, outermost skin, and the cartilage in-between. The aim of this study is to describe a technique for single-stage, three-layer reconstruction of the full-thickness ala nasi defects. This technique was used on three patients with tumors involving the nasal ala. Resulting full-thickness defects are reconstructed with a mucocartilaginous turnover flap planned from the contralateral side. Aesthetically acceptable results are obtained without the compromise of the nasal airway and with minimal donor site morbidity. None of the patients requested a revision operation. In conclusion, this is a novel technique with minimal donor site morbidity and good postoperative results. Moreover, lost tissues are replaced with exactly the same kind of tissues.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of two different types of provisional luting agents (RelyX Temp E, eugenol-based; RelyX Temp NE, eugenol-free) on the shear bond strengths between human dentin and two different resin-based luting systems (RelyXARC-Single Bond and Duo Link-One Step) after cementation with two different techniques (dual bonding and conventional technique). One hundred human molars were trimmed parallel to the original long axis, to expose flat dentin surfaces, and were divided into three groups. After related surface treatments for each specimen, the resin-based luting agent was applied in a silicone cylindrical mold (3.5 x 4 mm), placed on the bonding-agent-treated dentin surfaces and polymerized. In the control group (n = 20), the specimens were further divided into two groups (n = 10), and two different resin-based luting systems were immediately applied following the manufacturer's protocols: RelyX ARC-Single Bond (Group I C) and Duo Link-One Step (Group II C). In the provisionalization group (n = 40), the specimens were further divided into four subgroups of 10 specimens each (Group I N, I E and Group II N, II E). In Groups I N and II N, eugenol-free (RelyX NE), and in groups I E and II E, eugenol-based (RelyX E) provisional luting agents (PLA), were applied on the dentin surface. The dentin surfaces were cleaned with a flour-free pumice, and the resin-based luting systems RelyX ARC (Group I N and E) and Duo Link (Group II N and E) were applied. In the Dual bonding groups (n = 40), the specimens were divided into four subgroups of 10 specimens each (Group I ND, ED and Group II ND, ED). The specimens were treated with Single Bond (Groups I ND and ED) or One Step (Groups II ND and ED). After the dentin bonding agent treatment, RelyX Temp NE was applied to Groups I ND and II ND, and RelyX Temp E was applied to Groups I ED and II ED. The dentin surfaces were then cleaned as described in the provisionalization group, and the resin-based luting systems were applied: RelyX ARC-Single Bond (Group I ND and ED) and Duo Link-One Step (Group II ND and ED). After 1,000 thermal cycles between 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C, shear bond testing was conducted at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/minutes. One-way ANOVA, followed by a post hoc Tukey test (alpha = 0.05) was done. The dentin-resin-based luting system interfaces were evaluated under a scanning electron microscope. There was a significant reduction in the mean shear bond strength values of groups subjected to the provisionalization compared to the control and dual bonding technique groups (p < 0.05). The composition of provisional luting did not create a significant difference with regard to reducing shear bond strength values (p > 0.05). With regard to resin based luting systems, the shear bond strength values of the double-bond technique groups were not significantly different from the controls (p > 0.05).  相似文献
