The cerebellum is a crucial structure for cognitive function as well as motor control. Benign brain tumors such as schwannomas, meningiomas, and epidermoids tend to occur in the cerebellopontine angle cisterns and may cause compression of the posterior lateral cerebellum near the superior posterior fissure, where the eloquent area for cognitive function was recently identified. The present study examined cognitive impairment in patients with benign cerebellar tumors before and after surgical intervention in order to clarify the functional implications of this region in humans. Patients with cerebellar tumors showed deficits in psychomotor speed and working memory compared with healthy controls. Moreover, these impairments were more pronounced in patients with right cerebellar tumors. Functional magnetic resonance imaging during performance of a lure task also demonstrated that cerebellar tumors affected pattern separation or the ability to distinguish similar experiences of episodic memory or events with discrete, non-overlapping representations, which is one of the important cognitive functions related to the hippocampus. The present findings indicate that compression of the human posterior lateral cerebellum affects hippocampal memory function.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the stresses and strains of an endosseous dental implant in patients with different types of cleft palate in a finite element model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven three-dimensional (3D) maxillary models were designed on a personal computer according to computed tomography slice data obtained from seven dry skulls. Next, computer-aided modification was performed on each model to produce three other 3D models with different cleft patterns. Thus, four model types with different cleft patterns were designed and termed NORM (without cleft), ALVEOLAR (only alveolar cleft), PALATAL (only palatal cleft), and COMPLETE (complete cleft). An implant was embedded into the molar region of each model, and a 300-N vertical load and 50-N horizontal load were applied to simulate mastication. Under these conditions, the stresses occurring at the implant-bone interface were calculated by finite element analysis. RESULTS: Different stress patterns were observed between the models with a palatal cleft (PALATAL and COMPLETE) and those without palatal cleft (NORM and ALVEOLAR). Regarding vertical load application, greater stresses occurred in PALATAL and COMPLETE types than in NORM and ALVEOLAR types. On application of a horizontal load, though the stresses did not show quantitative difference, their vector patterns differed. CONCLUSION: In patients with palatal clefts, characteristic stress patterns occur on the bone-implant interface during mastication. This should be taken into consideration when performing an implant treatment in patients with clefts.  相似文献

Purpose:

To investigate the relationship between peripheral pulse wave (PPW)‐gating and the carotid systolic pulse wave in a large clinical patient cohort, and to establish a process for correct estimation of delay time from PPW‐gating to foot (ie, beginning) or peak times of carotid systolic pulse waves.

Materials and Methods:

Subjects comprised 209 patients scanned using 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for PPW‐gated phase contrast images at the common carotid artery. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted for the relationship between foot or peak times and the following factors after excluding correlated factors with coefficients ≥0.5: pulse rate (PR); systolic blood pressure; diastolic blood pressure; height; body weight; body mass index; Brinkman index; diabetes mellitus; hypertension; and hyperlipidemia.

Results:

PR showed significant correlation with foot (r = ?0.86, P < 0.001) and peak (r = ?0.87, P < 0.001) times. The following equations were derived: foot time (msec) = ?8.55 × PR + 993.1 and peak time (msec) = ?9.21 × PR + 1142.3. No other factors showed significant correlations.

Conclusion:

PR was the only factor showing significant relationships to foot and peak times of carotid artery flow. The derived equations will facilitate various kinds of noncontrast MR acquisition with simple PPW‐gating. J. Magn. Reson. Imaging 2012;36:454–458. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
