Autonomic correlates of lifetime suicidal thoughts and behaviors among adolescents with a history of depression

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) have been associated with emotion dysregulation and atypical responses to affective and stressful stimuli. To investigate the psychophysiology involved, we measured changes in respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and cardiac pre‐ejection period (PEP; indexing parasympathetic and sympathetic functioning, respectively) in response to stressful‐ and sadness‐eliciting laboratory probes. Our sample included adolescents with a history of depression and STBs (n = 177), adolescents with a history of depression but no history of STBs (n = 47), and healthy controls (n = 175). The outcome of interest was the most severe form of clinician‐rated STBs across the subject’s lifetime. In partial support of our hypotheses, during the stressful task, adolescents with a history of depression and STBs did not evidence the RSA decrease that was exhibited by controls and displayed greater PEP shortening compared to ever‐depressed adolescents with no lifetime STBs. No group differences were found in either RSA or PEP reactivity to the sadness‐eliciting stimulus. As expected, severity of STBs was positively correlated with the extent of PEP shortening during the stressful task. The results suggest that adolescents with a history of depression and STBs experience blunted parasympathetic responses to stress along with compensatory efforts. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of STBs among youths and underscore that future studies should examine physiological risk factors for these psychopathological outcomes.

Tuberculate and odontoma type supernumerary teeth

An 8-and-a-half-year-old girl with supernumerary teeth of tuberculate and odontoma type is described. Treatment of the patient is carried out on conventional lines with a combination of surgical and orthodontic methods. The upper tuberculate type supernumerary teeth were extracted and, after surgical exposure, the upper permanent first incisors were aligned with removable appliances. After secondary dentition was completed, the lower odontoma type supernumerary tooth was removed surgically, and also the maxillary and mandibular first premolars were extracted because of severe crowding, and fixed orthodontic appliances were used to align the permanent dentition. Early diagnosis and treatment of this anomaly is necessary to avoid more serious consequences and to prevent severe orthodontic disturbances.     

Differential in situ distribution of interleukin-8, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and Rantes in human chronic periapical granuloma

In situ distribution of three prototype chemokines interleukin (IL)-8, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 and Rantes was determined in chronic human periapical granulomas by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies. IL-8 was found primarily in the cytoplasm of the Malassez epithelial cells. MCP-1 immunoreactivity was confined to the endothelial cells that lined small venules. Each of the three investigated chemokines, including Rantes, exhibited a characteristic binding pattern to the extracellular matrix of the lesion. The observed chemokines may play a role in establishing the cellular composition of chronic apical periodontitis, thus augmenting the intensity of local inflammation and tissue damage.     

Distribution of interleukin-2 receptor α-chain and cells expressing major histocompatibility complex class II antigen in chronic human periapical lesions

In situ distribution of CD2⁺ T-lymphocytes, CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ T-cell subsets, CD14⁺ macrophages, interleukin-2 receptor α-chain (IL-2Rα) and class II major histocompatibility complex antigen (major histocompatibility complex class II, HLA-DR) expressing cells were determined in 14 chronic human periapical granulomas by imrnunohistochemical method using monoclonal antibodies. CD2⁺ lymphocytes were rather evenly distributed within the classical granulation tissue and comprised 55% of the mononuclear cells. Macrophages were distributed all over the periapical area, but their proportion was much less than that of T lymphocytes. Both small, lymphocyte-like mononuclear cells and larger mononuclear cells resembling macrophages displayed mild to strong circumferential staining with the anti-HLA-DR antibody. The majority of lymphocytes expressed IL-2Rα indicating the activated state of T cells within the lesion.     

Literature survey of apexification in connection with three cases

Endodontic treatment of three non-vital immature teeth is discussed. According Moorrees et al. root formation was in the stage two, six and four respectively. After access to the root canal, removing necrotic pulp and effective chemo-mechanical cleansing, Ca(OH)2 paste was used as a temporary filling material in each case. In two cases after closing the apical opening, permanent obturation was performed with half heated gutta-percha and lateral condensation to obtain a good seal. In one case permanent filling of the canal occurred with gutta-percha and AH26 as a sealer. In the first case two years, in the second case five years after obturation of the root canal with gutta-percha, periapical healing was evident in the control radiograph. In the third case using gutta-percha with AH26 as a sealer after two years new periapical lesion has developed. On the bases of literature data and our experiences in the case of non-vital immature teeth. Ca(OH)2 paste is the best temporary filling material to induce apexification process, and the half heated gutta-percha obturation is the most suitable permanent root filling material.
