Allograft use in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery: a review of the current literature

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) surgery plays an important role in restoring stability and function to the knee joint following ACL rupture. Owing to an increase in activity levels and sports participation, ACLR has become one of the most commonly performed procedures world-wide. Graft choice may influence clinical outcomes, and therefore the optimal graft remains widely debated. Whilst, historically, autograft tissue has been the preferred choice, the past decade has seen a steady increase in the popularity of allografts. This demand is partly driven by improvements in graft availability, procurement processes and safety; but more importantly a desire to eliminate issues related to donor site morbidity from graft harvest. Despite this, there remains controversy surrounding the use of allograft in ACLR surgery, with much of the literature demonstrating conflicting evidence on functional and survivorship outcomes. In this article we review the current literature surrounding allograft use in ACLR, from the biology of allograft integration, through to outcomes in clinical practice.     

Lenalidomide in the management of eosinophilic dermatosis of hematological malignancy

Eosinophilic dermatosis of hematological malignancy is a paraneoplastic skin eruption associated with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and other B‐cell malignancies. It clinically resembles an insect bite reaction and it can precede the symptoms of the hematological malignancy or be related to a more aggressive course. Different treatments have been proposed, but partial response and recurrence are frequent. Herein, we describe a case of eosinophilic dermatosis associated with mantle cell lymphoma with remission after lenalidomide therapy.     

Validation of assistive technology on psychoactive substances for visually impaired people

Purpose: To validate the assistive technology “Drugs: reflection for prevention” to be used with visually impaired people.

Method: Quantitative and quasi-experimental study, contrasting knowledge before and after the use of the assistive technology with 140 visually impaired people in institutes and associations for people with visual impairment. A questionnaire with identification data, a pre-test, a post-test and a questionnaire to assess the assistive technology were applied. Data were described through means and standard deviations, and analyses included the McNemar test, the exact binomial distribution test, and the intraclass correlation coefficient.

Results: Participants were male (65.7%), 84.3% were blind, aged 37.1?years on average and with schooling of 10.1?years on average. There were more correct answers in the post-test (p?<.001). The attributes of the assistive technology were considered adequate: objectives, access, clarity, structure and presentation, relevance and efficacy, and interactivity (p?<.001).

Conclusions: The assistive technology “Drugs: reflection for prevention” was considered valid and reliable to inform visually impaired people about psychoactive substance abuse.

Valorization of food processing wastes and by-products for bioplastic production

The global plastic production is reaching new altitudes every year. Growing production of petroleum-based plastics has incurred in disposal issues raising the concerns of plastic pollution and impact to the environment. These issues have encouraged innovation and research activities in the field of bioplastics, offering alternatives for conventional plastics. In recent years, global bioplastic production has also witnessed tremendous growth and expansion. Some of the main drivers of this growth are innovative biopolymers such as Polylactic acid (PLA) and Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). However, industrial expenses to produce bioplastics are much higher when compared to petroleum-derived plastics (e.g. industrial PHA production is estimated to be 5–10 times more expensive than petroleum-derived polymers). In this regard, globally many researchers have investigated for more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternatives to produce plastics. One potential option to pursue would be to explore agri-food wastes and by-products for bioplastic production. This would not only reduce the volume of wastes and by-products, but also production costs incurred. This review paper provides an overview of bioplastics, including production methods and possibilities of industrial food waste valorization for bioplastic production.
