Objectives

To identify the 100 most cited articles published in dental journals.

Materials and methods

A search was performed on the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science for the most cited articles in all the journals included in the Journal Citation Report (2010 edition) in the category of “Dentistry, Oral Surgery, and Medicine”. Each one of the 77 journals selected was analyzed using the Cited Reference Search tool of the ISI Web of Science database to identify the most cited articles up to June 2012. The following information was gathered from each article: names and number of authors, journal, year of publication, type of study, methodological design, and area of research.

Results

The number of citations of the 100 selected articles varied from 326 to 2050. All articles were published in 21 of the 77 journals in the category. The journals with the largest number of the cited articles were the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (20 articles), the Journal of Periodontology (18 articles), and the Journal of Dental Research (16 articles). There was a predominance of clinical research (66 %) over basic research (34 %). The most frequently named author was Socransky SS, with 9 of the top 100 articles, followed by Lindhe J with 7. The decades with most articles published of the 100 selected were 1980–1989 (26 articles) and 1990–1999 (25 articles). The most common type of article was the case series (22 %), followed by the narrative review/expert opinion (19 %). The most common area of study was periodontology (43 % of articles).

Conclusions

To our knowledge, this is the first report of the top-cited articles in Dentistry. There is a predominance of clinical studies, particularly case series and narrative reviews/expert opinions, despite their low-evidence level. The focus of the articles has mainly been on periodontology and implantology, and the majority has been published in the highest impact factor dental journals.

Clinical significance

The number of citations that an article receives does not necessarily reflect the quality of the research, but the present study gives some clues to the topics and authors contributing to major advances in Dentistry.  相似文献

Using insulin-secreting cell line (INS)-1 cells stably expressing dihydropyridine-insensitive mutants of either Cav1.2 or Cav1.3, we previously demonstrated that Cav1.3 is preferentially coupled to insulin secretion and [Ca2+]i oscillations stimulated by 11.2 mM glucose. Using the same system, we found that insulin secretion in 7.5 mM glucose plus 1 mM 8-bromo-cAMP (8-Br-cAMP) is mediated by both Cav1.2 and Cav1.3. Treatment of INS-1 cells or INS-1 cells stably expressing Cav1.2/dihydropyridine-insensitive (DHPi) channels in the presence of 10 microM nifedipine, with effector-specific cAMP analogs 8-(4-chlorophenylthio)-2'-O-methyladenosine-cAMP [8-pCPT-2'-O-Me-cAMP; 100 microM; Exchange Protein directly Activated by cAMP 2 (Epac2)-selective] or N6-benzoyl-cAMP [50 microM; Protein Kinase A (PKA)-selective] partially increased insulin secretion. Secretion stimulated by a combination of the two cAMP analogs was additive and comparable with that stimulated by 1 mM 8-Br-cAMP. In INS-1 cells stably expressing Cav1.3/DHPi in the presence of 10 microM nifedipine, N6-benzoyl-cAMP, but not 8-pCPT-2'-O-Me-cAMP, significantly increased glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. However, the combination of N6-benzoyl-cAMP and 8-pCPT-2'-O-Me-cAMP significantly increased glucose-stimulated secretion compared with N6-benzoyl-cAMP alone. In INS-1 cells, 8-Br-cAMP potentiation of insulin secretion in 7.5 mM glucose is blocked by thapsigargin (1 microM) and ryanodine (0.5 microM). In contrast, ryanodine has no effect on insulin secretion or [Ca2+]i oscillations stimulated by 11.2 mM glucose in INS-1 cells. Our data suggest that both Cav1.2 and Cav1.3 mediate insulin secretion stimulated by 7.5 mM glucose and cAMP via a mechanism that requires internal stores of Ca2+. Furthermore, cAMP modulation of secretion mediated by Cav1.2 seems to involve both Epac2 and PKA independently. In contrast, cAMP modulation of Cav1.3-mediated secretion depends upon PKA activation, whereas the contribution of Epac2 is dependent upon PKA activation.  相似文献

Background and study aimsHelicobacter pylori is the main cause of gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcers and gastric cancer. In the past two decades, the recommended treatment for its eradication as a first-line regimen is the standard triple therapy consisting of a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), amoxicillin and clarithromycin or metronidazole. However, the effectiveness of this traditional regime, which initially was 90%, progressively declined in many parts of the world and is currently 57–73%. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the eradication rate with triple therapy with levofloxacin is superior as first-line therapy to that with treatment using clarithromycin in the population that attended as outpatients at the Hospital of Lídice.Patients and methodsWe designed a prospective study, with two groups of patients presenting dyspeptic symptoms, from October 2010 to October 2011, who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and whose biopsies were positive for infection with H. pylori. At the end, 81 patients were included in the order of biopsy result arrival to fill the quota of each group. The first group with 42 patients underwent triple therapy with clarithromycin and the second group with 39 patients underwent therapy with levofloxacin, amoxicillin and a PPI. The patients’ age ranged between 23 and 76 years, the average being 49.5. The predominant sex was female, at 72.84%. Both treatments lasted for 10 days and the patients were clinically re-evaluated 15 days after their conclusion and programmed for a second endoscopy to verify H. pylori eradication.ResultsAmong the 42 patients in the control group, there were 14 eradication failures with 33.33% resistance to clarithromycin. Among the 39 patients in the experimental group, two eradication failures with 5.13% resistance to levofloxacin were observed. The χ2 value was 6.96.ConclusionsTreatment with levofloxacin was more effective than conventional triple therapy. Triple therapy with levofloxacin can be implemented in populations where resistance to clarithromycin has been observed.  相似文献

A gradual buildup of neuronal activity known as the “readiness potential” reliably precedes voluntary self-initiated movements, in the average time locked to movement onset. This buildup is presumed to reflect the final stages of planning and preparation for movement. Here we present a different interpretation of the premovement buildup. We used a leaky stochastic accumulator to model the neural decision of “when” to move in a task where there is no specific temporal cue, but only a general imperative to produce a movement after an unspecified delay on the order of several seconds. According to our model, when the imperative to produce a movement is weak, the precise moment at which the decision threshold is crossed leading to movement is largely determined by spontaneous subthreshold fluctuations in neuronal activity. Time locking to movement onset ensures that these fluctuations appear in the average as a gradual exponential-looking increase in neuronal activity. Our model accounts for the behavioral and electroencephalography data recorded from human subjects performing the task and also makes a specific prediction that we confirmed in a second electroencephalography experiment: Fast responses to temporally unpredictable interruptions should be preceded by a slow negative-going voltage deflection beginning well before the interruption itself, even when the subject was not preparing to move at that particular moment.  相似文献

Objectives: The objective of this study was to analyse the antibacterial and antiplaque activity of three edible toothpastes with the widest worldwide distribution: KidScents™, which contains essential oils; Browning B&B™, with medicinal plants; and Wysong Probiodent™, which contains probiotics. Study Design: The study group was formed of twenty healthy volunteers (dental students) with a good oral health status. Using a balanced randomisation system, all volunteers performed toothbrushing with four products (the three edible toothpastes and water) at intervals of one week. Bacterial vitality in the saliva was analysed by epifluorescence microscopy and plaque regrowth was evaluated using the Turesky-Quigley-Hein plaque index. Results: Bacterial vitality in the saliva was significantly higher after toothbrushing with water (positive control) than with the three toothpastes (P=0.002, P=0.003 and P<0.001, respectively). The plaque index was significantly higher after using these three toothpastes than after toothbrushing with water (P=0.047, P=0.032 and P<0.001, respectively). Conclusions: The three edible toothpastes analysed have some antimicrobial activity but favour plaque regrowth. Key words:Edible toothpaste, dental plaque, oral bacteria.  相似文献
