Abstract

Data on eating disorders in women with PCOS is insufficient. The objective of this case study was to examine the hypothesis that women with PCOS exhibit more impaired eating than healthy women. Women diagnosed with PCOS under the 2003 Rotterdam Diagnostic Criteria (n?=?40) were compared with a healthy control group (n?=?40). The groups also were divided into two as normal body weight and overweight/obese. The Eating Disorders Assessment Questionnaire (EDE-Q) and the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-R21), were completed by all participants in order to evaluate eating behaviors in addition to eating disorders. Among the overweight/obese group, the average total and subscale scores of the EDE-Q as well as the total and sub-factor scores of the TFEQ-R21 were higher in women with PCOS compared to controls (p?<?.05). However, this statistically significant result was not shown among the women with normal weight (p?>?.05). In comparison to the controls, the PCOS women displayed higher values of the tool scores indicating abnormal restraint eating, body shape concern and weight concern subscale scores (p?<?.05). This result suggests that the evaluation of eating disorders should be added to routine screening and the monitoring of women with PCOS.  相似文献

Abstract

It was aimed to investigate the effects of kumiss a fermented mare horse beverage on the sirtuin deacetylases in the oxidative stress which had been induced by 1,2-dimethyl hydrazine (DMH). Forty BALB/C male mice were divided into four groups as control, kumiss (2?×?108 cfu/mL), DMH (20?mg/kg), and kumiss?+?DMH (2?×?108?cfu/mL + 20?mg/kg). At the end of 20-week regimen, SIRT2, SIRT3 protein expressions by western blotting, immunolocalizations, and inhibitory anti-oxidant activity analysis in liver, colon, and kidney tissues were performed. SIRT2 and SIRT3 expressions in DMH group were decreased in liver, colon, and kidney tissues and the decrease further stimulated by kumiss reinforcement. SIRT3, a mitochondrial protein, immunostaining increased in cell nuclei of tissues in response to kumiss treatments. The oxidative stress induced by DMH was determined to increase plasma 8-OH-2-deoxyguanosine, tissue oxidative stress index, and total oxidant capacity levels. Kumiss supplement was identified to reduce these levels and increase tissue total antioxidant capacity and reduced glutathione levels. Clarifying the molecular relationship between intracellular changes in the locations of SIRT2 and SIRT3 and oxidative stress might be important with regards to developing new medical treatments in the future. The kumiss may show a protective effect against DMH-induced damage by regulating the expression of sirtuin proteins and by protecting antioxidant system.  相似文献

Objective: Late-preterm delivery is known to be associated with potential adverse effects on lung development. Passive smoking may result in alterations of pulmonary function in infants born late-preterm. Impulse oscillometry (IOS) is a noninvasive, rapid, and practicable technique that can assess lung function. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of passive smoking on lung function tests in preschool children born late-preterm using IOS.

Methods: The study population consisted of a total of 139 children between 3 and 7 years of age born late-preterm who were being followed-up at our outpatient unit at the time of study period. Late-preterms were subcategorized according to presence or absence of exposure to passive smoking (PS). Those with and without exposure to passive smoking were referred to as PS group (56.1%, n?=?78) and non-PS group (43.9%, n?=?61), respectively. Resistance (R5–R20), reactance (X5–X20), and resonant frequency were measured by impulse oscillometry (IOS) at 5–20?Hz.

Results: Median R5-R20 and Z5 were significantly higher and median X10 was significantly lower in PS group compared to non-PS group (p?Conclusions: This study demonstrated that passive smoking significantly increases peripheral airway resistance and seems to adversely affect lung function in children born late-preterm.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Severe congenital neutropenia (SCN), also known as Kostmann syndrome, was originally reported as an autosomal recessive disease of neutrophil production. The disease is characterized by a maturation arrest of neutrophil precursors at the promyelocytic stage of differentiation and by extremely low levels of mature neutrophils in peripheral blood. METHODS: A 6-year-old male presented with a complaint of gingival swelling and bleeding, and swelling at the left side of his face. Upon clinical examination, severe inflammation of all gingival tissues was apparent, and a periapical abscess with mobility was noted on the left mandibular second molar. Medical and dental histories revealed numerous recurrent bacterial infections associated with oral and non-oral tissues. His medical history with recurrent infections led us to evaluate his 3-year-old sister to determine the status of her oral health. Inflammation of her oral tissues and recurrent bacterial infections were apparent. Their consanguineous parents were in good health. To assist in identifying possible systemic diseases underlying the inflammatory situation in the siblings, consultations were requested from the Pediatric Hematology Department at Selcuk University and Pediatric Oncology Department at Gulhane Military Medical Academy. RESULTS: Based on absolute neutrophil count (< or =200/mm(3)) and bone marrow aspiration findings consistent with early maturation arrest in myelopoiesis, the cases were diagnosed as SCN. No chromosomal abnormality was detected upon cytogenetic examination. Sequencing analysis also revealed no mutation in the neutrophil elastase or growth factor independent-1 (GFI-1) genes in these patients. Severe periodontal disease, attachment loss, and mobility for over 50% of the deciduous teeth were noted. Within 6 months, the male sibling lost all of his deciduous teeth due to periapical and periodontal infections. His sister presented with tooth mobility for all mandibular incisors. Monthly visits, including scaling, polishing, and 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate irrigation were performed to support their oral hygiene and to avoid recurrent oral infections. We have been able to stabilize these patients' periodontal conditions during a 2-year follow-up period. CONCLUSION: This case report emphasizes the role of periodontists and pediatric dentists in the diagnosis of diseases linked with neutrophil and other systemic disorders and highlights the need to optimize the health of oral tissues with regular appointments.  相似文献

In this study, 500 frontal and supraorbital transcranial passages were studied in 50 cadavers and 200 crania of 500 samples. One hundred six specimens had a frontal foramen (notch), and all the samples had a supraorbital foramen (notch). The frontal passage was a foramen in 7 samples and a notch in 99 samples. As for the supraorbital passage, it was found as a foramen in 133 of specimens and as a notch in 358 of specimens. In 9 of the specimens, there were double notches or foramina. The distances from the foramina (notches) to angulus oculi medialis were measured in the cadavers. The average distance from the angulus oculi medialis to the frontal foramen (notch) was 4.50 mm, and the average distance to the supraorbital foramen (notch) was 9.87 mm. The distances from the foramina (notches) to the midline were measured in the crania. The average distances from the midline to the frontal foramen (notch) and the supraorbital foramen (notch) were 20.24 mm and 25.23 mm, respectively. The average distance between the frontal foramen (notch) and supraorbital foramen (notch) was 5.37 mm in cadavers and 4.99 mm in crania. In 200 crania, the distances of the frontal and supraorbital transcranial passages to the midline were measured. Types of these passages were also evaluated, and frequencies were calculated. Measurements were made using a digital compass, and the student t test was used in the statistical evaluation of results.  相似文献

The frequency, location, and function of the vomeronasal organ, also known as the Jacopson organ, in human beings remains poorly understood. In this study, a search for the frequency of the vomeronasal organ was performed by nasal examinations of 346 adult patients and 21 cadaver heads by anterior rhinoscopy and videotaped rigid 30 degrees endoscopy. The vomeronasal organ was identified in 112 patients (32%) and in 8 cadaver heads (38%). The location, shape, type, and relation to sex of the vomeronasal organ were described. Ten specimens were examined histologically and histochemically for neuron-specific enolase (anti-neuron-specific enolase), high-molecular-weight cytokeratin (anti-high-molecular-weight cytokeratin), and low-molecular-weight cytokeratin (anti-low-molecular-weight cytokeratin). Considering its variability in shape and the lack of immunohistochemical characteristics of nerve tissue, the present results are not suited to argue for functional significance of the vomeronasal organ in human beings.  相似文献
