Eye opening of the newborn at and up to 20 minutes after birth

Early eye contact between mother and baby is considered important in the attachment process between mother and baby. How soon after birth is it possible for eye contact to occur? How soon after birth will a baby open his eyes spontaneously? Where is the baby physically at that time? Is hospital labour ward routine conducive to early eye-to-eye contact between mother and baby? Discussing these questions with midwifery colleagues, it became apparent that we were unable to answer with any degree of certainty, the question ‘How soon after birth will a baby open his eyes spontaneously?’ It was felt that ‘most babies open their eyes at or very soon after birth’. How soon was ‘very soon’? and did all babies open their eyes soon after birth? Were there any observable influencing factors? If so, what were they? In this study of 104 babies, 30 babies opened their eyes at birth, and the remainder, except three, opened their eyes ranging from within 1 minute of birth to within 20 minutes of birth (20 minutes being the time limit set for the study). Some babies were observed to open their eyes momentarily only the very first time, keeping their eyes open longer subsequently.     

Antibodies reacting with the antigens of the human immunodeficiency virus in systemic lupus erythematosus

A study was made of the level of anti-HTLV-111 using an enzyme immunoassay (Emzygnost-anti-HTLV-111) in 75 donors and 143 patients with various diseases including SLE (57), rheumatoid arthritis (9), Sj?gren's disease (3), Bekhterev's disease (2), polymyositis (2), dilatation cardiomyopathy (30), and acute lymphocytic leukemia (40). Anti-HTLV-111 were detected in 26 SLE patients and in one patient with polymyositis. A study of positive sera using immunoblotting showed no interaction with virus antigens. A conclusion was made that the detection of anti-HTLV-111 in systemic rheumatoid diseases was a false-positive result.     

Platelet function analyzer (PFA)-100® closure time in the evaluation of platelet disorders and platelet function

BACKGROUND: Closure time (CT), measured by platelet function analyzer (PFA-100) device, is now available to the clinical laboratory as a possible alternative or supplement to the bleeding time test. AIM: On behalf of the Platelet Physiology Subcommittee of the Scientific and Standardization Committee of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH-SSC), a working Group was formed to review and make recommendations on the use of the PFA-100 CT in the evaluation of platelet function within the clinical laboratory. METHODS: The Medline database was searched to review the published information on the PFA-100 CT in the evaluation of platelet disorders and platelet function. This information, and expert opinion, was used to prepare a report and generate consensus recommendations. RESULTS: Although the PFA-100 CT is abnormal in some forms of platelet disorders, the test does not have sufficient sensitivity or specificity to be used as a screening tool for platelet disorders. A role of the PFA-100 CT in therapeutic monitoring of platelet function remains to be established. CONCLUSIONS: The PFA-100 closure time should be considered optional in the evaluation of platelet disorders and function, and its use in therapeutic monitoring of platelet function is currently best restricted to research studies and prospective clinical trials.     

Definition of major bleeding in clinical investigations of antihemostatic medicinal products in non-surgical patients

Summary. A variety of definitions of major bleeding have been used in published clinical studies, and this diversity adds to the difficulty in comparing data between trials and in performing meta-analyses. In the first step towards unified definitions of bleeding complications, the definition of major bleeding in non-surgical patients was discussed at the Control of Anticoagulation Subcommittee of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Arising from that discussion, a definition was developed that should be applicable to studies with all agents that interfere with hemostasis, including anticoagulants, platelet function inhibitors and fibrinolytic drugs. The definition and the text that follows have been reviewed and approved by the cochairs of the subcommittee and the revised version is published here. The intention is to also seek approval of this definition from the regulatory authorities.     

Scientific and standardization committee communications: classification and nomenclature of disintegrins isolated from snake venoms

Summary.  Viper venoms from the Elapidae, Hydrophiidae, Atractaspididae, Viperidae and Colubridae families contain at least 25 separate classes of biologically active compounds, including enzymes and non-enzymatic molecules. Nomenclature standardization of these by structure and function has been reported for prothrombin activators. No such agreement has been made for the nomenclature and classification of disintegrins. At the 51st Annual SSC Meeting in Sydney Australia (August 2005), we reported the variety of names given to the 78 disintegrins then known, and proposed a nomenclature standardization method for the naming of future members in this protein family. The summary of these recommendations will provide guidance as disintegrin discoveries move beyond high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) separation methods to mass spectrometry, proteomics and cloned cDNA.
