Sleep problems increase with ageing. Increasing evidence suggests that sleep problems are not only a consequence of age‐related processes, but may independently contribute to developing vascular or neurodegenerative brain disease. Yet, it remains unclear what mechanisms underlie the impact sleep problems may have on brain health in the general middle‐aged and elderly population. Here, we studied sleep's relation to brain functioning in 621 participants (median age 62 years, 55% women) from the population‐based Rotterdam Study. We investigated cross‐sectional associations of polysomnographic and subjectively measured aspects of sleep with intrinsic neural activity measured with resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging on a different day. We investigated both functional connectivity between regions and brain activity (blood‐oxygen‐level‐dependent signal amplitude) within regions, hierarchically towards smaller topographical levels. We found that longer polysomnographic total sleep time is associated with lower blood‐oxygen‐level‐dependent signal amplitude in (pre)frontal regions. No objective or subjective sleep parameters were associated with functional connectivity between or within resting‐state networks. The findings may indicate a pathway through which sleep, in a ‘real‐life’ population setting, impacts brain activity or regional brain activity determines total sleep time.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo characterize the diet and eating habits of adult immigrants of Chinese origin residing in Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Barcelona, Spain), and to identify the factors that influence the changes in diet and eating habits.MethodQualitative study conducted in 2017 through a discussion group with eight adults of Chinese origin (one man and seven women). The information was complemented by five interviews with key informants (three men and two women) and non-participant observation in health promotion workshops aimed at Chinese patients of a health center in Santa Coloma de Gramenet.ResultsChinese adults made three meals a day and tended to snack between meals. Their diet was based on rice, soy and proteins of vegetable origin. Participants rarely consumed milk and milk derivatives but highlighted their consumption of snacks, sugary drinks and pastries, as well as the incorporation of foods, new dishes and cooking techniques from the host country. The Chinese immigrants tried to maintain their diet of origin, however there were various barriers to this, such as the preference of the local diet by the children, work schedules and lack of time.ConclusionsA tendency towards dietary acculturation is observed among the participants. Health promotion activities aimed at Chinese families are needed to improve aspects of their diet and eating habits, aiming to reduce the consumption of snacks and sugary products.  相似文献

Aim

To investigate the expression of salivary S100A7 levels among patients with oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) and healthy controls.

Method

A total number of 60 participants were included in the study (30 OSF cases and 30 healthy controls). Demographic data was collected using a structured baseline questionnaire. Salivary S100A7 levels were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Data was analyzed using Student t-test. Pearson correlation test was used to evaluate correlation between S100A7 levels and independent variables such as frequency and duration of areca nut use, gutka use, and mouth opening.

Results

The mean value of salivary S100A7 for OSF group was 0.275?ng/ml, whereas mean value of salivary S100A7 for healthy controls was 0.195?ng/ml. Student t-test indicated that there was statistically significantly higher levels of S100A7 in OSF group as compared to healthy controls (p?<?.001). When the clinical variables of individual groups were analysed, a significant negative correlation was found between salivary S100A7 and duration of areca nut (p?=?.009) and gutka chewing (p?=?.03), whereas a significant positive correlation was found for mouth opening (p?=?.04).

Conclusion

OSF presented higher levels of salivary S100A7 levels as compared with healthy individuals and may be used as surrogate measure to identify subjects at risk for OSF.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the acute and long-term hemodynamic and neurohumoral effects of the vasopeptidase inhibitor omapatrilat in human heart failure. BACKGROUND: Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition constitutes a major advance in the treatment of chronic heart failure (CHF). Simultaneous inhibition of both neutral endopeptidase and ACE with omapatrilat may represent a new treatment strategy in CHF. METHODS: Three hundred and sixty-nine patients with symptomatic heart failure were randomized to double-blind treatment with omapatrilat (first 190 patients: 2.5 mg, 5 mg or 10 mg; last 179 patients: 2.5 mg, 20 mg or 40 mg once daily) for 12 weeks. RESULTS: Acutely, the 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg doses of omapatrilat produced greater reductions in pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and systemic vascular resistance compared with 2.5 mg. Higher doses were associated with greater increases in vasodilator and natriuretic peptides, in addition to ACE inhibition. After 12 weeks, omapatrilat 20 mg and 40 mg showed greater falls from baseline in PCWP (40 mg: 0 h to 12 h average change -7.3 +/- 0.8 mm Hg) and SBP (40 mg: -11.7 +/- 1.7 mm Hg) than 2.5 mg (both p < 0.01 vs. 2.5 mg). The incidence of adverse experiences and patient withdrawal were similar in all groups. CONCLUSIONS: In CHF, the acute hemodynamic benefit seen with higher doses of omapatrilat was associated with increases in plasma vasodilator and natriuretic peptide levels in addition to ACE inhibition. After 12 weeks, the hemodynamic benefit was maintained. Omapatrilat may be a promising new agent in CHF.  相似文献
