Introduction: The growing demand for skin rejuvenation procedures with minimal down time and low risk has led to the development of fractional radiofrequency (RF) systems. The new VoluDerm? RF microneedle technology creates minute columns of tissue thermal microablation. Treatment triggers natural fractional healing, resulting in dermal volumizing and skin renewal. This preclinical research assessed the safety and efficacy of the VoluDerm through histological evaluation of morphological changes in the target tissue. Methods: Following approval of protocol by ethical committee, treatments were conducted on two domestic pigs using VoluDerm disposable tips. Histological samples of 14, 7, 4 days and immediately after treatment with various energy settings were analyzed. Results: Immediate VoluDerm epidermal and dermal effects, and progress of healing process, as function of time following treatment (days 4 and 7), were demonstrated. Histology analysis of samples of 14 days demonstrated complete healing for all energy levels. Summary: This in vivo histology confirmed the safe and effective performance of the VoluDerm treatment. A fractional pattern of affected areas, surrounded by healthy tissue, was demonstrated. Healing process proved natural dermal renewal and epidermal complete regeneration. Histology supports clinical advantages of the VoluDerm natural-looking skin enhancement, with none to minimal pain and no downtime.  相似文献

A case of a 10 year old boy who underwent a T10 continuous thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) using a standard technique for postoperative pain management is reported. In the postoperative recovery area, 10 mL of Omnipaque contrast dye was injected through the catheter and an anteroposterior chest radiograph was performed. The radiograph showed longitudinal spread of contrast parallel to the spine from the T4-T5 intervertebral disc to the T10-T11 intervertebral disc with clear lateral extension of contrast along the fifth through the tenth intercostal nerves.  相似文献

Reactive angioendotheliomatosis (RAE) is a diagnostically challenging condition characterized by multiple possible clinical presentations, which makes diagnosis challenging. Potential differences in the toxicological properties of nanosized and non-nanosized particles have been notably pointed out for titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) particles, which are currently widely produced and used in many industrial areas. Nanoparticles of the iron oxides magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) and hematite (Fe(2)O(3)) also have many industrial applications but their toxicological properties are less documented than those of TiO(2). In the present study, the in vitro cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of commercially available nanosized and microsized anatase TiO(2), rutile TiO(2), Fe(3)O(4), and Fe(2)O(3) particles were compared in Syrian hamster embryo (SHE) cells. Samples were characterized for chemical composition, primary particle size, crystal phase, shape, and specific surface area. In acellular assays, TiO(2) and iron oxide particles were able to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). At the same mass dose, all nanoparticles produced higher levels of ROS than their microsized counterparts. Measurement of particle size in the SHE culture medium showed that primary nanoparticles and microparticles are present in the form of micrometric agglomerates of highly poly-dispersed size. Uptake of primary particles and agglomerates by SHE exposed for 24 h was observed for all samples. TiO(2) samples were found to be more cytotoxic than iron oxide samples. Concerning primary size effects, anatase TiO(2), rutile TiO(2), and Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles induced higher cytotoxicity than their microsized counterparts after 72 h of exposure. Over this treatment time, anatase TiO(2) and Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles also produced more intracellular ROS compared to the microsized particles. However, similar levels of DNA damage were observed in the comet assay after 24 h of exposure to anatase nanoparticles and microparticles. Rutile microparticles were found to induce more DNA damage than the nanosized particles. However, no significant increase in DNA damage was detected from nanosized and microsized iron oxides. None of the samples tested showed significant induction of micronuclei formation after 24 h of exposure. In agreement with previous size-comparison studies, we suggest that in vitro cytotoxicity and genotoxicity induced by metal oxide nanoparticles are not always higher than those induced by their bulk counterparts.  相似文献

Purpose: Problem-based learning (PBL) is an educational method that fosters self-directed study in small groups. The purpose of this study was to describe the Tel Aviv University’s occupational therapy (OT) program and the challenges implementing such program. In addition, the study compared the PBL grades obtained by students who are native Hebrew speakers with those students who are native Arabic speakers; and, assessed the correlation between the grades in the PBL course and the grades in the clinical fieldwork studies.

Method: 166-second year OT undergraduate students participated. All completed three PBL courses and seven weeks of clinical fieldwork studies. Data collection included students’ grades in PBL course (based on PBL evaluation forms) and in clinical fieldwork studies (based on preceptor’s evaluation and a written assignment).

Results: Pearson correlations revealed significant correlations between PBL grades and clinical fieldwork studies grades. T-test analysis between students who are native Hebrew speakers and those who are native Arabic speakers revealed significant differences in PBL grades.

Conclusions: Findings imply partial congruence between students’ grades in the PBL course and their achievements in the fieldwork studies. Findings might suggest that adjustments should be made in order to assist students from minorities (challenged by language requirements) in gaining higher grades in the PBL program.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to examine the potential renal protective effect of low-dose dopamine in high-risk patients undergoing coronary angiography. BACKGROUND: Contrast nephropathy is prevalent in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) and/or diabetes mellitus (DM). Decreased renal blood flow due to vasoconstriction was suggested as a contributory mechanism. Low-dose dopamine has a dilatory effect on the renal vasculature. METHODS: Sixty-six patients with mild or moderate CRF and/or DM undergoing coronary angiography were prospectively double-blindedly randomized, to either 120 ml/day of 0.9% saline plus dopamine 2 microg/kg/min (Dopamine group) or saline alone (Control group) for 48 h. RESULTS: Thirty-three Dopamine-treated (30 diabetics and 6 with CRF) and 33 Control (28 diabetics and 5 with CRF) patients were compared. Plasma creatinine (Cr) level increased in the Control group from 100.6+/-5.2 before to 112.3+/-8.0 micromol/liter within five days after angiography (p = 0.003), and in the Dopamine group from 100.3+/-5.4 before to 117.5+/-8.8 micromol/liter after angiography (p = 0.0001), respectively. There was no significant difference in the change of Cr level (deltaCr) between the two groups. However, in a subgroup of patients with peripheral vascular disease (PVD), deltaCr was -2.4+/-2.3 in the Control group and 30.0+/-12.0 micromol/liter in the Dopamine group (p = 0.01). No significant difference occurred in deltaCr between Control and Dopamine in subgroups of patients with preangiographic CRF or DM. CONCLUSIONS: Contrast material caused a small but significant increase in Cr blood level in high-risk patients. There is no advantage of dopamine over adequate hydration in patients with mild to moderate renal failure or DM undergoing coronary angiography. Dopamine should be avoided in patients with PVD exposed to contrast medium.  相似文献
