Aetiology of Acute Pharyngitis and Clinical Response to Empirical Therapy with Erythromycin Versus Amoxicillin

One hundred and eighty-nine adults with acute pharyngitis hadculture and serological evaluation for groupA beta haemolyticstreptococci (GABHS), Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Branhamellacatarrhalis. Sixteen patients had evidence for infection withGABHS, none for M. pneumoniae, and one for B. catarrhalis. Forthose with GABHS, there was no significant difference betweenempirical treatment by erythromycin or amoxicillin. For thosewithout GABHS, empirical treatment with erythromycin appearedto result in a statistically significant reduction in coughand a noticeable but less than significant reduction of othersymptoms when compared to empirical treatment with amoxicillin.The new formula tion of erythromycin utilized in this study(PCE) may be associated with a reduction in gastrointestinalintolerance from that reported with other erythromycin products.     

Reduced attention-related negative potentials in schizophrenic adults

Event-related potentials were recorded from outpatient adult schizophrenics receiving maintenance doses of neuroleptics and from normal control subjects during performance of a reaction time task and a complex visual discrimination task, the Span of Apprehension. Difference potentials were computed to isolate endogenous activity associated with the processing demands of the Span task. Schizophrenics produce significantly less early endogenous negative activity than do normal subjects. This processing-related negativity reflects pattern matching activity to an attentional trace during the serial scan of the visual icon. We previously reported an identical reduction in processing-related negativity in childhood-onset schizophrenia, suggesting that this deficit is age independent. Both frontal contingent negative variation and an early frontal P3 were larger in the schizophrenics than in normal subjects, suggesting an inappropriate mobilization of nonspecific attentional resources. A later posterior P3 was significantly smaller in schizophrenics than in normal subjects.     

Treatment of carcinoma of the cervix with bromocriptine

Summary. Twenty-eight patients with advanced cancer were treated with 2·5 mg of bromocriptine twice daily. One patient with carcinoma of the ovary achieved tumour stasis. Of 18 patients with carcinoma of the cervix, three achieved tumour stasis and five achieved very long remissions with a median survival of more than 6 years from the start of treatment.
