An androgen-secreting adnexal tumour is presented. The tumour was a steroid cell tumour of the mesovarium, without crystals of Reinke, hence the diagnosis was a steroid cell tumour (lipid cell tumour), not otherwise specified (in this case, because of its location in the mesovarium, an adrenal rest tumour). The morphometric differences between the urothelial cells in the voided urine of 24 patients with grade I and grade II bladder tumours were measured. In both wet-fixed Papanicolaou-stained smears as in air-dried Giemsa-stained preparations, the cells in the grade I tumours are larger and have more pronounced anisocytosis and a smaller nucleus to cytoplasm area (N/C) ratio. Although absolute dimensions of cells and nuclei in the two preparatory technique differ significantly, the average N/C ratios are similar. In both methods almost all grade I tumours have average N/C cell size ratios of less than 0.6 and grade II tumours more than 0.6. Morphometrically urothelial cells could not be distinguished from cells exfoliated from grade I bladder tumours. The results indicate that it is feasible to classify bladder tumours using the morphometric values of the exfoliated urothelial cells alone. 相似文献

The reproducibility of the DNA index of paraffin wax sections from 44 follicular tumours of the thyroid (18 follicular adenomas and 26 follicular carcinomas), which had been assessed by flow cytometry was analysed in two laboratories, using consecutive sections of the same specimens and two different commercially available flow cytometers. Two slightly different cell preparation and staining techniques were used in the two laboratories. Using strictly defined criteria the histograms were classified blind as diploid, peritetraploid, aneuploid, or inadequate and insufficient by two independent investigators. Both the concordance between the two different flow cytometers and the agreement of duplicate assessments within the same flow cytometers were assessed. The mean coefficient of variation of the G0/G1 peak of the diploid tumours in the PARTEC flow cytometer was 5.5 (range 2.3-9.8) and in the FACS flow cytometer 5.2 (range 3.7-8.3); this difference was not significant. There was concordance of classification between the two laboratories in 35 of 36 cases. In 25 cases (18 diploid, seven aneuploid) the intralaboratory variation showed a 100% concordance in histogram classification. It is concluded that flow cytometer DNA index assessment of follicular tumours of the thyroid is reproducible and can be used to evaluate the discriminating and prognostic value of this feature. 相似文献

The sublabial salivary glands were studied by morphometric methods in 68 healthy volunteers to establish possible changes related to age in those tissue components that are affected in Sjögren''s syndrome and connective tissue diseases (and which might stimulate Sjögren''s syndrome). There was an increase in the amount of connective tissue and intralobular ducts with age and a corresponding decrease in acinar tissue. During the aging process changes in the intralobular ducts occurred: the outer and inner diameters of these ducts and the thickness of the epithelium decreased, but the ratio of the outer and inner diameters of the ducts remained constant. The amount of diffuse lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate and the vascularity of the tissue remains constant with age. In 15 of the subjects, however, discrete lymphocytic foci were seen and in six of these more than one focus/4 mm2 of salivary tissue was found, which has been described as suggestive of Sjögren''s syndrome. The volume percentage of lymphocytic foci is constant during the aging process. The histological features commonly used to diagnose Sjögren''s syndrome may occur in normal people, and false positive diagnoses will occur if these criteria are rigidly adhered to. Morphometry may provide more reliable criteria for distinguishing changes induced by inflammation and related to age which occur in salivary tissue. 相似文献

The prognostic value of using histological typing, grading, and morphology, in addition to clinical staging, was assessed in 98 cases of invasive ovarian cancer of the common epithelial types (serous, mucinous, and endometrial). All of these cases had at least five years of follow up. When regression analysis was used, the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics' (FIGO) staging system was the best indicator for prognosis. Analysis of a combination of morphometric features was the second best indicator, being especially useful for the those patients with stage I disease. Variables that indicated a relatively poor prognostic outcome were mitotic index above 30; volume percentage epithelium above 65%; shortest nuclear axis above a mean of 1 X 1 micrometers. Histological typing of ovarian tumours was of limited value; mucinous tumours have a somewhat better prognosis than serous tumours, but the prognostic value of typing alone was found to be limited. Qualitative histological grading was useful, but the prognostic value of morphometric grading was better. Measurement of morphological features with an interactive computer program is simple and can be done by a pathologist or a technician: in future it is likely that such automated systems of measurement will improve the objectivity of tissue analysis. 相似文献
