Magnesium alloys have been proposed as prospective degradable implant materials. To elucidate the complex interactions between the corroding implants and the tissue, magnesium implants were analyzed in a mouse model and the response was compared to that induced by Ti and by the resorbable polymer polyglactin, respectively. One month after implantation, distinct traces of corrosion were apparent but the magnesium implants were still intact, whereas resorbable polymeric wound suture implants were already fragmented. Analysis of magnesium implants 2 weeks after implantation by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicated that magnesium, oxygen, calcium and phosphate were present at the implant surface. One month after implantation, the element composition of the outermost layer of the implant was indicative of tissue without detectable levels of magnesium, indicating a protective barrier function of this organic layer. In agreement with this notion, gene expression patterns in the surrounding tissue were highly similar for all implant materials investigated. However, high-resolution imaging using energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy revealed magnesium-containing microparticles in the tissue in the proximity of the implant. The release of such corrosion particles may contribute to the accumulation of calcium phosphate in the nearby tissue and to bone conductive activities of magnesium implants. 相似文献
Diminishing the loss of performance of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) is a challenge that is yet to be fulfilled. Understanding of deterioration processes and mechanisms (i.e., so-called aging) requires analytically accurate examination of aged cells. Changes in the distribution of lithium or transition metals in the LIB cells can influence their cycle and calendar life significantly. As electrochemically treated cells and especially their electrodes do not age homogeneously and the local electrochemistry (e.g. deposition patterns) is strongly dependent on surface properties, bulk analysis is not a satisfactory investigation method. Therefore, a surface sensitive method, namely laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (LA-ICP-OES) is presented. LIB cells with lithium metal oxide LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (NCM111) as cathode material and graphite as anode material are investigated using a 213 nm Nd:YAG laser.An LA-ICP-OES method was developed and applied to investigate the transition metal dissolution in lithium batteries as well as lithium deposition e.g. in case of short circuits.相似文献
The aim of this study was to examine the potential relationship between the occurrence of orthodontic root resorption and presence of dental anomalies such as tooth agenesis and pipette-shaped roots. Dental anomalies and root resorption were assessed on dental panoramic tomographs (DPT) of 88 subjects, 27 males and 61 females, mean age 28.4 (SD = 11.3 years), selected from orthodontic patients on the basis of the following exclusion criteria: previous fixed appliance treatment, bad quality of the DPTs and no visibility of the periodontal ligament of every tooth, and younger than 15 years of age at the onset of treatment with fixed edgewise appliance lasting at least 18 months. A pipette-shaped root was identified as defined by a drawing. Tooth agenesis was assessed on DPTs and from subjects' dental history. Root resorption was calculated as the difference between the root length before and after treatment, with and without a correction factor (crown length post-treatment/crown length pre-treatment). If one of the four upper incisors showed root resorption of ≥2.3 mm with both formulas, the patient was scored as having root resorption. Chi-square tests indicated that there was no relationship between orthodontic root resorption and agenesis (P = 0.885) nor between orthodontic root resorption and pipette-shaped roots (P = 0.800). There was no relationship between having one of the anomalies and root resorption either (P = 0.750). In the present study, it was not possible to confirm on DPTs a relationship between orthodontic root resorption and dental anomalies, such as agenesis and pipette-shaped roots. 相似文献
Objective: To evaluate the effect of the selective estrogen receptor modulator raloxifene hydrochloride (Evista, Eli Lilly and Company, Indianapolis, IN) on plasma levels of β-endorphin, and to determine whether β-endorphin levels and menopausal symptoms are related.
Design: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study.
Setting: Endocrinology outpatient department.
Patient(s): Forty postmenopausal women.
Intervention(s): The women received raloxifene, 60 mg/d, or placebo for 3 months. A questionnaire on climacteric symptoms was administered before and after treatment.
Main Outcome Measure(s): Circulating levels of β-endorphin, climacteric symptom score, and correlation with β-endorphin levels.
Result(s): Raloxifene treatment significantly increased levels of β-endorphin and did not significantly affect climacteric symptoms, with the exception of worsening vasomotor symptoms. No significant relation was seen between plasma levels of β-endorphin and climacteric symptoms.
Conclusion(s): Raloxifene modulates plasma levels of β-endorphin without concomitantly relieving climacteric symptoms, as seen with hormone replacement therapy. 相似文献
Hazardous potential in industrial environments is normally assessed by means of immission-based sampling and analyses. This approach is not adequate, if effects of specific technical adjustments at machine tools or working processes on hygienic parameters should be assessed. This work has focused on the optimization of a manufacturing process (electrical discharge machining, EDM), with regard to risk reduction assessment. It is based on emission analyses rather than immision analyses. Several technical EDM parameters have been examined for their influence on air-based emissions. Worktools and workpieces used have a strong influence on aliphatic compounds and metals but not on volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylene-benzene and xylene (BTEX)) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air emissions. Increasing the dielectric (mineral oil) level above processing location decreases BTEX, chromium, nickel and PAH emissions. Aliphatic compounds, in contrast, increase in air emissions. EDM current used has a positive relationship with all substances analyzed in air emissions. Indicative immission concentrations, as can be expected under EDM conditions, are estimated in a predictive scenario. The results of this characterization give rise to an important conclusion in that risk assessment so far has been using incorrect parameters: total aliphatic compounds. Maximum level of chromium is reached long before limit values of aliphatic compounds are exceeded. Because of the fact that metals, like chromium, also have a higher hazardous potential, metal analysis should be introduced in future risk assessment. This experimental approach, that captures total emission of the electrical discharge machine, and is not solely based on immission values, has lead to a better understanding of the production process. Aging is characterized by accumulation of structural and metabolic changes in the brain. Recent studies suggest transmodal brain networks are especially sensitive to aging, which, we hypothesize, may be due to their apical position in the cortical hierarchy. Studying an open‐access healthy cohort (n = 102, age range = 30–89 years) with MRI and Aβ PET data, we estimated age‐related cortical thinning, hippocampal atrophy and Aβ deposition. In addition to carrying out surface‐based morphological and metabolic mapping experiments, we stratified effects along neocortical and hippocampal resting‐state functional connectome gradients derived from independent datasets. The cortical gradient depicts an axis of functional differentiation from sensory‐motor regions to transmodal regions, whereas the hippocampal gradient recapitulates its long‐axis. While age‐related thinning and increased Aβ deposition occurred across the entire cortical topography, increased Aβ deposition was especially pronounced toward higher‐order transmodal regions. Age‐related atrophy was greater toward the posterior end of the hippocampal long‐axis. No significant effect of age on Aβ deposition in the hippocampus was observed. Imaging markers correlated with behavioral measures of fluid intelligence and episodic memory in a topography‐specific manner, confirmed using both univariate as well as multivariate analyses. Our results strengthen existing evidence of structural and metabolic change in the aging brain and support the use of connectivity gradients as a compact framework to analyze and conceptualize brain‐based biomarkers of aging. 相似文献
Summary In the last decade, operative decompression of cord and cauda, internal fixation with rods, bony fusion and early ambulation, have become more popular in the management of thoracolumbar injuries with neurological deficit.Computer-tomography, CT myelography and peroperative ultrasonography provided direct evidence, that, without surgical decompression, reduction of displaced bone and disc fragments, propelled into the spinal canal, is often incomplete, not only after postural reduction, but also after rod instrumentation.The percentage of patients with incomplete paraplegia who show improvement of neurological deficit after surgical reduction and stabilization, is probably greater than that noted with postural management. There are, however, shortcomings in the classification of neurological deficit, which hamper adequate comparison. Further research in this field is necessary.The value of the surgical approaches is mainly in immediate stabilization, which diminishes pain, facilitates nursing care and allows more rapid mobilization. This results in a shorter stay in hospital and earlier active rehabilitation. That decompression of the neural elements provides improved neurological recovery seems likely, but has so far not been proven. Management of these patients, preferably admitted to specialized units, should be carried out by an orthopedic surgeon and a neurosurgeon in cooperation. The orthopedic surgeon is mainly concerned with management of the spine; the neurosurgeon with management of the paraplegia, operations being carried out by both. 相似文献
