Purpose

To evaluate the efficiency of perforated punctal plug in acquired punctal stenosis.

Materials and methods

Forty-five eyes of 33 patients who had epiphora due to punctal stenosis were included in this study. After biomicroscopic examination and lacrimal dilatation punctal stenosis was managed with the perforated punctal plugs in all patients. In the following period epiphora, plug tolerance, lacrimal drainage were evaluated and graded. Lacrimal drainage was evaluated with fluorescein dye disappearing test.

Results

The age of the patients ranged between 31 and 80 (mean 55.78 ± 13.11). Preoperatively punctal dilatation and lacrimal system irrigations were performed on all patients. Lacrimal system irrigation was positive in all patients. Perforated punctal plugs were placed in the inferior puncti in all patients. The plugs were explanted 6 months after operation. The follow-up period ranged between 6 and 24 months. Plug tolerance was good in 97.8% of the eyes in the 1st month visit. Epiphora decreased remarkably in 88.9% of the patients 1 month after plug implantation, except one whose plug dropped off spontaneously in 2 weeks. Fluorescein disappearing times were found under 3 min in 97.8% of the eyes after plug explanations.

Conclusion

Punctum stenosis is one of the several disorders that cause lacrimal drainage obstruction. Perforated punctal plugs are found convenient and effective in managing punctal stenosis.  相似文献

Tuberculosis (Tbc) remains as a major public health problem in the world. Extrapulmonary Tbc is gaining importance and it accounts for approximately 15% of all new cases. Osteoarticular Tbc is an infrequent form of the disease, accounting for 1-5% of all cases. Joints are uncommon site of infection; therefore, peripheral Tbc is considered rare. Tbc arthritis are usually monoarticular but oligoarticular involvement are also reported. We presented here four cases with osteoarticular Tbc and reviewed the literature.  相似文献

The presence of ductal injury is the main determinant of consequence and a cause of significant mortality and morbidity in children with blunt pancreatic trauma. Proper treatment must be initiated on the basis of accurate anatomic diagnosis of the type and location of the injury. Computed tomography is an insufficient method for the diagnosis of the type and location of pancreatic ductal injury. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatography (ERP) is a reliable technique for determining the status of the pancreatic duct in children and may allow for definitive treatment of ductal injury by stenting in selected patients. There is only one study of 2 cases reporting therapeutic ERP with ductal stenting in children after blunt trauma. In this report, we present an 11-year-old child with pancreatic ductal injury who was diagnosed and treated endoscopically by stent placement, during ERP. The patient improved steadily and was discharged uneventfully. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatography may be a very useful diagnostic and treatment tool in the management of main ductal disruptions.  相似文献

Biomechanical evaluation in osteoporosis: ovariectomized rat model   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of ovariectomy on rat femur biomechanical parameters. Bone mineral density (BMD) and histological investigation were also evaluated. Fourteen female Sprague–Dawley rats (seven ovariectomized, seven control) were used. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorbsiometry. Bone biomechanical parameters were measured in femoral midshaft with tensile test using a biomaterial testing machine and maximum load, stiffness, energy absorption capacity (structural properties), ultimate stress, ultimate strain, and elastic modulus (material properties) were calculated. Diaphyseal cortical bone thickness was measured by using histological method. The ovariectomized (OVX) rat femur’s BMD was 14% lower than control rats (p=0.006). Mean maximum load was 55% less than the control group’s (p=0.0001). Stiffness was 72% less in OVX rats (p=0.05). Femurs of rats with OVX had 32% less absorbed energy than controls (p=0.09). From the stress–strain curve ultimate stress, ultimate strain and elastic modulus was calculated. Elastic modulus was 53% less than controls (p=0.05). Ultimate stress decreased 21% in OVX rats (p=0.097). Ultimate strain was 25% less than controls in OVX rats. Cortical thickness was significantly decreased in OVX rats than in controls (p<0.05). In conclusion, femur biomechanical parameters are decreased in osteoporosis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The liver has a unique capacity to regenerate upon exposure to viral infections, toxic reactions and cancer formation. Liver regeneration is a complex phenomenon in which several factors participate during its onset. Cellular proliferation is an important component of this process and the factors that regulate this proliferation have a vital role. FLT3, a well-known hematopoietic stem cell and hepatic lineage surface marker, is involved in proliferative events of hematopoietic stem cells. However, its contribution to liver regeneration is not known. Therefore, the aim of this study was to clone and examine the role of FLT3 during liver regeneration in rats. METHODS: Partial cDNA of rat homolog of FLT3 gene was cloned from thymus and the tissue specific expression of this gene at mRNA and protein levels was examined by RT-PCR and Western blot. After treating with 2-AAF and performing hepatectomy in rats to induce progenitor-dependent liver regeneration, the mRNA and protein expression profile of FLT3 was investigated by real-time PCR and Western blot during liver regeneration. In addition, cellular localization of FLT3 protein was determined by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The results indicated that rat FLT3 cDNA has high homology with mouse and human FLT3 cDNA. It was also found that FLT3 is expressed in most of the rat tissues and during liver regeneration. In addition, its intracellular localization is altered during the late stages of liver regeneration. CONCLUSION: The FLT3 receptor is activated at the late stages of liver regeneration and participates in the proliferation response that is observed during progenitor-dependent liver regeneration.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the potential protective effect of remote ischemic preconditioning (IPC) on delayed colonic anastomotic healing induced by remote ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into four groups, each consisting of 10 rats: the control group (C), the remote I/R group [I/R, 40 min of superior mesenteric artery (SMA) occlusion], the preconditioned I/R group (IPC, two cycles of 5 min temporary occlusion of SMA before an ischemic insult of 40 min), and the preconditioned group (PC, two cycles of 5 min temporary occlusion of SMA). Colonic anastomosis was performed immediately after the ischemic insult. Anastomotic healing was assessed on postoperative day 7 by determining anastomotic bursting pressure (ABP), tissue hydroxyproline content, histopathological examination, malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide levels. RESULTS: Remote I/R injury resulted with significant impairment in anastomotic healing in terms of mean ABP (P = 0.004), hydroxyproline content (P = 0.002), histopathological healing score (P = 0.001), nitric oxide level (P = 0.010), and MDA levels (P = 0.0001) when compared with the control group, but remote IPC did not improve all above mentioned parameters (P = NS for all), except MDA level (P = 0.011) when compared with I/R group. PC alone impaired the ABP (P = 0.0001), but it did not significantly change the other parameters measured (P = NS). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study showed that remote IPC did not prevent I/R-induced delaying in colonic anastomotic healing.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Long-term inhalation of thinners may cause damage, both to the lungs and to other organ systems. It causes cellular damage via formation of reactive oxygen species. The lung is protected from oxidative stress by the glutathione (GSH) antioxidant system which can be augmented by the thiol drug, N-acetylcysteine (NAC). This study investigated the protective effect of NAC on peroxidative changes in rat lungs exposed to inhalation of thinners for 8 weeks. METHODOLOGY: Seventy-two male Wistar albino rats were used and divided into two groups: one group inhaled only thinners (TI), while the other inhaled TI plus NAC. Rats in the TI and TI + NAC groups were divided into four subgroups (each consisting of eight rats) according to the duration of exposure to TI: 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks. A control group (n = 7) of rats inhaled neither TI nor NAC. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and GSH levels, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were determined in the lung tissues. Histopathological findings were evaluated as acute and chronic changes in the alveoli and interstitium in the TI and TI + NAC groups and compared with those in the control group. RESULTS: While tissue MDA levels in the groups inhaling TI for 4, 6 and 8 weeks were significantly higher than those in the control groups (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.0001, respectively), GSH levels were significantly lower (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, P < 0.01, respectively). Tissue SOD activities in the groups inhaling TI for 6 and 8 weeks were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, respectively). In the TI group, MDA levels were significantly increased (P < 0.01) with increasing duration of inhalation (from the second week through to the eighth week), while GSH levels and SOD activities were significantly decreased (P < 0.01, P < 0.01). Tissue MDA levels were significantly lower in the TI + NAC groups across all inhalation periods, when compared with the TI groups (P < 0.01, P < 0.0001, P < 0.0001, P < 0.0001, respectively). Tissue GSH levels in the TI + NAC groups were significantly higher than those of the TI groups (respective values: P < 0.05, P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.0001). Tissue SOD activities in the TI + NAC groups were significantly higher than those of the TI groups (respective values: P < 0.05, P < 0.0001, P < 0.05, P < 0.0001). Pathological examinations with light microscopy did not show any beneficial effect of NAC application in terms of deferring or alleviating the negative effects of TI. CONCLUSIONS: Thinners are agents that cause imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants produced by aerobic cellular systems. This imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant systems is decreased by the effect of NAC. However, ultrastructural studies may be needed to substantiate this evidence morphologically, as light microscopy was inconclusive.  相似文献
