The Bartholin's gland cyst is a condition that occurs in approximately 2% of women, most of whom are of reproductive age. Although benign, it is associated with significant patient discomfort. Definitive treatment involves the surgical removal of the entire cyst. The objective of this study was to describe an alternative conservative surgical technique with CO(2) laser adopted in our institution and to evaluate the feasibility, complication rate, and results obtained with this technique in an office setting. Our study showed that CO(2) laser treatment of the Bartholin's gland cyst can be carried out safely in an outpatient setting, with minimum patient discomfort and high long-term cure rates.  相似文献

The proteome of most parasite species is currently unknown. Hairworms (Nematomorpha), 300 species distributed around the world, are parasitic in arthropods (mainly terrestrial species) when juveniles, but they are free-living in aquatic environments when adult. Most aspects of their systematics and biology are currently unknown. The aim of this paper was (i) to report a novel and reproducible protocol for the analysis of the proteome of hairworms using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DGE) and mass spectrometry (matrix laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF)) and (ii) to determine the level of proteomic divergence between two sympatric but taxonomically unrelated nematomorph species in the adult stage, Paragordius tricuspidatus Dufour (Nematomorpha, Gordiidae) and Spinochordodes tellinii Camerano (Nematomorpha, Gordiidae). In total, 689 protein spots were observed for P. tricuspidatus, 575 for S. tellinii. Only 36.2% spots were shared between the two species. Quantitative analysis of the proteins which are common to both parasite species reveals substantial differences in the pattern of protein expression. These results suggest a rapid evolutionary divergence between these two nematomorph families. Also, to test the value of our MALDI-TOF protocol, we used Actin-2 (Act-2), a protein highly conserved in the course of evolution. Peptide mass fingerprint (PMF) data obtained for Act-2 of P. tricuspidatus and S. tellinii suggest a very high homology with Act-2 of different worms species belonging to the Bilateria phylum (Annelida and Nematoda) and more specifically to Lumbricus terrestris (Annelida, Lumbricidae) and Caenorhabditis elegans (Nematoda, Rhabditidae). We discuss our results in relationship with current ideas concerning the use of proteomics in systematics.  相似文献

We measured severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 spike protein subunits S1/S2 antibodies by using capillary electrophoresis and a chemiluminescence immunoassay for 5,444 active healthcare workers in Italy. Summary The authors describe a new method for reproducible, non-invasive fixation of a stereotaxic localizing frame. A localizing system similar to that of Brown-Roberts-Wells for MR can be fixed at the base of the facial skeleton to the upper dental arch by an orthodontic resin plate. Results of trials with CT scan, advantages and disadvantages are discussed.The new fixture could be employed in open surgery and in fractionated radiotherapy.  相似文献

Previous reports indicate that malnutrition reduces reproductive functions. We have demonstrated that protein deprivation in the diet also causes reproductive dysfunction by reducing hypothalamic GnRH secretion. Noradrenaline and nitric oxide are modulators of GnRH secretion. Noradrenaline stimulates GnRH secretion and nitric oxide inhibits catecholamine release. This work studies the hypothalamic catecholaminergic and nitrergic neuron activity in Wistar adult male rats fed on an aproteic diet (AP) during 21 days; this treatment was started when rats were 70 days old. Our first experiment studied catecholamine turnover rate after inhibition of tyrosine hydroxylase activity by injecting (i.p.) 400 mg/kg alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine. Our second experiment studied in vitro hypothalamic nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity in animals under the same diet. AP diet significantly decreased both noradrenaline (P<0.05) and dopamine (P<0.05) hypothalamic turnover rate. Noradrenaline turnover in cerebral cortex was not altered by the aproteic diet. However, hypothalamic NOS activity was not affected in animals fed on an AP diet. These results indicate that the lack of protein in the diet reduces catecholaminergic neuron activity in adult male rats by a NO-independent mechanism, thus suggesting that a decrease in noradrenergic activity may be involved in the reduction of GnRH secretion induced by an AP diet.  相似文献

Introduction: Treatment of HIV infection has consistently evolved in the last three decades. A steady improvement in efficacy tolerability, safety, and practical aspects of treatment intake has made HIV infection much easier to manage over the long term, and in optimal treatment conditions the life expectancy of persons living with HIV infection now approaches the values of the general population. The last category of antiretrovirals to be fully developed for clinical use is the one of strand-transfer integrase inhibitors (INSTIs).

Areas covered: In this review, the evolution of the knowledge on INSTIs use in the clinical setting is reviewed, analyzed, and interpreted. Emphasis is placed on the properties possibly accounting for several superiority results achieved by INSTIs in non-inferiority designed comparative clinical trials, which led to their inclusion as first line options in all versions of HIV therapeutic guidelines.

Expert commentary: Some unprecedented clinical-pharmacological properties of INSTIs, such as their rapid and sustained action against HIV replication, the optimal tolerability and safety profile and a clinically proven robust genetic barrier are the main factors justifying the successful clinical use of INSTIs. Based on these unique features, novel INSTIs-based treatment modalities are being developed, including the reduction of antiretroviral regimens to two drugs only.  相似文献
