Summary The effect of distension on adrenergic innervation was investigated in the rat urinary bladder. Bladders were distended for 3 h by forced diuresis and ballon obstruction, and specimens were taken from the bladder dome, body and neck for the demonstration of glyoxylic acid-induced fluorescence of catecholamines. Depletion of catecholamines started after 10 h and was almost complete after 2 days. The fluorescence had recovered part way after 5–7 days and was practically normal after 21 days. Small, intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells in the ganglia continued to leak catecholamines throughout the 21-day study period. The primary clinical success of distension therapy for the treatment of unstable bladder may be at least partly due to a reversible disturbance in the function of the adrenergic nerves, which have an excitatory alpha-adrenergic dominance in such cases, but the persistent leakage from SIF cells raises the question of whether distension causes prolonged disturbances in bladder function. 相似文献

A wide variety of biological and alloplastic injectable biomaterials are available for soft tissue augmentation, but the ideal material has not yet been discovered. Biological materials such as collagen and hyaluronan yield temporary results, while injectable alloplasts are apt to cause varying degrees of foreign body reactions that may result in lumps and chronic inflammation.We present two cases (one is the first filed case in the world) of migratory subcutaneous inflammatory masses secondary to injection of acrylic hydrogel (DermaLive), which is an alloplastic biomaterial recently introduced into the market in Europe. Histology revealed foreign body reaction to acrylic hydrogel with granuloma formation containing multinucleated giant cells. Following this, further reports on complications have been reported elsewhere in Europe. Since 1987, 13 free microsurgical jejunal transplants for large pharyngo-oesophageal tumors have been done in 12 patients at Tampere University Hospital. The conventional technique was used for the end to end upper anastomosis in seven patients, and our new end to side anastomotic technique in six. Five patients were alive at the time of writing, the mean survival being 22 months (range 1-48). Five patients developed orocutaneous fistulas, three of which healed spontaneously. In the remaining two the fistulas were caused by rapid recurrence of the tumour. There was no significant difference in ability to feed orally or swallow among the patients operated upon by the end to end or the end to side anastomotic technique. Our results show that the free microvascular jejunal transfer is a safe procedure for repair of the hypopharynx. Our new end to side hypopharyngojejunal anastomosis makes it possible to monitor the transplanted bowel reliably by direct vision. 相似文献

The titer and avidity of respiratory syncytial virus-specific antibodies were measured in 196 serum specimens from 93 children with an acute, laboratory-confirmed respiratory syncytial virus infection. An enzyme immunoassay method based on the ability of urea to dissociate the bound antibodies with low avidity from the antigen was used. Three patterns of immune responses were observed. Children less than 6 months of age usually had low titers of antibodies with high avidity in their acute-phase serum samples. These antibodies were concluded to be of maternal origin, since their reaction pattern was similar to that of healthy adults. During the next few weeks, a slight increase in titers with a concurrent decrease in antibody avidity was observed. All children 6 to 24 months of age had low-avidity antibodies in their acute-phase serum samples, which matured to high avidity during the follow-up. On the contrary, about half of the children greater than 24 months of age had high-avidity antibodies already in the acute-phase serum samples. We conclude that the former children were experiencing primary infections with respiratory syncytial virus and the latter were experiencing reinfections. The aim of this study was to assess tissue reactions to bioabsorbable self-reinforced polylactide/polyglycolide (SR-PLGA) 80/20 miniscrews in rabbit cranial bone. One PLGA screw was implanted on one side and one titanium screw on the other side of the sagittal suture (n = 21). Three animals were sacrificed after 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 54, and 72 weeks. In histological examination the numbers of macrophages, giant cells, active osteoblasts, and fibrous tissue layers were assessed and degradation of the bioabsorbable screws was evaluated. After 2 weeks, macrophages were seen near the heads of both screws. After 4 and 8 weeks, the bioabsorbable screws were surrounded by fibrous tissue. Osteoblastic activity and groups of several giant cells were seen. After 24 weeks, a significant change in the morphology of the PLGA screws had occurred. Osteoblastic activity and the amount of giant cells had decreased. After 1 year, some PLGA biomaterial was still present. PLGA screws had been replaced by adipose tissue, fibrous tissue, and "foamy macrophages" that had PLGA particles inside them. After 1(1/2) years, the amount of biomaterial remaining had decreased remarkably. The particles of biomaterial were inside foamy macrophages. SR-PLGA 80/20 screws are biocompatible and have no clinically manifested complications when used in the cranial bone of rabbits. No contraindications as regards their clinical use in craniofacial surgery was found when these screws were studied in the cranial bones of rabbits. 相似文献

Achilles tendon rupture is a common injury. Absorbable sutures are not commonly used because of their limited strength properties. Recently, sutures with prolonged strength retention properties have been developed. The aim of the study is to test the mechanical properties of recently developed poly-L/D-lactide (PLDLA) sutures in comparison with polyglyconate (Maxon) sutures. PLDLA (0.2 mm thick) and Maxon (4.0) sutures were studied in vitro by immersion in a buffered saline solution (pH 7.4). Tensile strength tests were done on sutures retrieved after 1-26 weeks. In vivo, they were implanted in the subcutis of 32 rabbits. Tensile strength tests were done on sutures retrieved after 1-6 weeks. The sutures were also used to repair the Achilles tendon in rabbits. Maximum force before breaking and percentage elongation of tendons were determined. Although PLDLA had a lower initial tensile strength than Maxon, PLDLA showed more prolonged tensile strength retention than Maxon. Tendons repaired with PLDLA, however, had a lower strength than Maxon-repaired tendons at six weeks (insignificant difference). PLDLA has more prolonged tensile strength properties compared with Maxon. Thus, PLDLA offers an alternative to Maxon in repair of the Achilles tendon. 相似文献

The disappearance of catecholamine fluorescence from the noradrenaline-containing sympathetic nerve fibres after arterial transplantation was studied using a femoral artery graft sutured to rat carotid artery. Glyoxylic acid-induced fluorescence was used to demonstrate adrenergic nerves histochemically. At six hours the network of fibres had started to degenerate, and catecholamine fluorescence from the adrenergic nerves had almost completely disappeared within 24 hours of grafting. Control specimens from normal femoral arteries showed a dense network of fluorescent adrenergic nerves. Based on observations of the relatively rapid liberation of catecholamines from the degenerating adrenergic nerves, we suggest that catecholamines liberated from degenerating adrenergic nerves may have an important role in early vasospasm in microvascular and coronary bypass surgery. 相似文献
