Auditory Discrimination and the Eyeblink   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This experiment evaluated the association between blinking and cognitive activities. Subjects received 200 and 400 ms tones (1 KHz) at fixed intervals in a duration discrimination paradigm. One group (“Task”) was instructed to respond to the stimuli on the basis of duration and another (“No-Task”) was instructed to ignore the stimuli. Blink activity (latency, rate, duration) and performance (RT, hit and false alarm rates) measures were evaluated. A first analysis (Task subjects only) indicated that stimulus duration had significant effects on RT and blink latency; both were generally longer following the 400-ms than the 200-ms stimuli. In a second analysis, involving Task and No-Task subjects, blink latencies were shorter in the Task group. Blink and eyelid closure durations increased over the task period in both analyses. These effects suggest that blinks occur when attentional processes wane.  相似文献

A 55-year-old woman who underwent orbital fat excision for cosmesis was incidentally found to have an isolated orbital cysticercus identified by histopathologic examination. The ensuing workup was negative for disseminated cysticercal infection and further treatment was deferred. Although uncommon, orbital cysticercosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of an asymptomatic orbital mass. Symptomatic orbital myocysticercosis has been effectively treated with albendazole at a dosage of 30 mg/kg for 15 days combined with simultaneous low-dose steroids.  相似文献

The usual specimens submitted by a medical examiner for toxicological analysis include blood, urine, bile, vitreous humor, stomach contents, and solid-organ tissue. The detection of drugs in these specimens typically involves a combination of techniques including colorimetry, immunoassay, and gas chromatography. Although many laboratories rely principally on urine for the detection of drugs of abuse by immunoassay, these assays may be applied to other specimen types. An evaluation of Microgenics Corporation's cloned enzyme donor immunoassay (CEDIA) was conducted in order to evaluate its use in the detection of cocaine/cocaine metabolites in vitreous humor specimens. During a 14-month period, 392 vitreous humor specimens were analyzed by the CEDIA DAU Cocaine assay. Instrument parameters were set according to published manufacturer's guidelines. All presumptive positive immunoassay results prompted confirmatory testing and quantitation by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) of other specimens including blood. Vitreous humor specimens were not tested by GC-MS. Using a approximately 100-ng/mL cutoff, the CEDIA assay produced 23 presumptive positive results, 22 of which were confirmed by GC-MS. The only specimen which could not be confirmed, elicited an immunoassay screen value near the cutoff limit. Routine analysis of blood, urine, bile, and/or bladder wash specimens by gas chromatography-nitrogen phosphorus detection revealed the presence of cocaine/cocaine metabolites in only 7 (31.8%) of the 22 confirmed cases. The concentration ranges of cocaine and benzoylecgonine in the blood specimens were none detected to 337 ng/mL and 17 to 8598 ng/mL, respectively. Cocaethylene was not detected in these cases. Analysis of vitreous humor specimens by CEDIA improved the detection rate of cocaine/cocaine metabolites by 0.7% in the cases submitted to our laboratory during the 14-month period.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study examined racial/ethnic differences in attitudes toward seeking mental health services. METHODS: Data from the National Comorbidity Survey, which administered a structured diagnostic interview to a representative sample of the US population (N = 8098), were analyzed. Multiple logistic regression was used, and data were stratified by need for mental health services. RESULTS: African Americans with depression were more likely than Whites with depression to "definitely go" (odds ratio [OR] = 1.8, P < .001) seek mental health services. African Americans with severe psychiatric disorders were less likely to be "somewhat embarrassed if friends knew they sought care" (OR = 0.3, P < .001) than were their White counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: African Americans reported more positive attitudes toward seeking mental health services than did Whites.  相似文献

Studies in England and Italy have demonstrated a striking association between employment in the shoemaking industry and cancer of the nasal cavities and sinuses. However, three recent, large-scale proportionate mortality studies of U.S. shoeworkers do not show any deaths from these tumors. This paper reviews the methodology of those studies, emphasizing the underlying data and statistical power. In addition, epidemiologic and other considerations important in assessing and interpreting the apparent absence of a nasal cancer risk in the U.S. shoe industry are discussed.  相似文献

Mortality among industrial workers exposed to formaldehyde   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15  
A historical cohort study evaluated the mortality experience of 26,561 workers employed in 10 formaldehyde-producing or -using facilities. Approximately 600,000 person-years of follow-up accrued as workers were followed to January 1, 1980. Estimates of historical exposure to formaldehyde by job were developed by project industrial hygienists using monitoring data available from participating plants, comments from long-term workers, and comprehensive monitoring data specifically collected for this study. Mortality from all causes combined was about as expected [standardized mortality ratio (SMR) = 96] based on mortality rates of the general U.S. population. Significantly fewer deaths occurred from infective and parasitic diseases (SMR = 51) and from accidents (SMR = 72) than expected. Cancer overall was not related to formaldehyde exposure. Workers exposed to formaldehyde had slight excesses for Hodgkin's disease and cancers of the lung and prostate gland, but these excesses were not consistently related to duration of or average, cumulative, or peak formaldehyde exposure levels. Recent animal studies found nasal cancer among rats exposed to formaldehyde, but no excess of this tumor occurred in this study. Mortality from brain cancer and leukemia among these industrial workers was not excessive in contrast to reported excesses among professional groups (e.g., anatomists, embalmers, and pathologists) with exposure to formaldehyde. Although there was a deficit for cancer of the buccal cavity and pharynx, mortality from certain subsites, i.e., the nasopharynx and oropharynx, was elevated. These subsites did not, however, show a consistently rising risk with level of exposure. These data provide little evidence that mortality from cancer is associated with formaldehyde exposure at levels experienced by workers in this study.  相似文献

H37Rv and H37Ra have been widely used as models of virulent and avirulent strains, respectively, of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Since the sequencing of H37Rv, microarrays have been used to investigate gene expression of M. tuberculosis strains under various conditions, and to compare gene expression of specific isolates of the organism. Because differences in the virulence of these organisms could also be manifest via their differential induction of host genes, we used Affymetrix Human Genome Arrays U133A and U133B to evaluate human alveolar macrophage (AM) responses to infection with H37Rv and H37Ra. H37Rv altered expression of far more genes than did H37Ra. Moreover, the genes induced by H37Rv to a greater extent than by H37Ra were predominantly associated with the development of effective immunity. H37Rv markedly increased expression of IL-23 p19, whereas neither organism significantly induced IL-12 p35 expression. Quantitative PCR confirmed that H37Rv induced significantly more AM p19 expression than did H37Ra. After low-level infection of both AM and peripheral blood monocytes (MN) with H37Rv, neither cell type produced IL-12 (by ELISA). In contrast, AM displayed significant IL-23 production in response to H37Rv, whereas MN did not. Our findings thus suggest an important role for IL-23 in human host responses to pulmonary infection with M. tuberculosis, and are consistent with epidemiologic and genetic studies that imply that H37Rv may not have unusual capacity to cause human disease.  相似文献

A growing body of work suggests that astrocytomas and glioblastoma multiforme will require carefully tailored, molecularly targeted therapy for successful treatment. Recent efforts to comprehensively identify mutations and gene expression changes in glioblastoma have shown that mutation of NF1 is a common alteration in human glioblastoma. We have developed and characterized a panel of 14 tumor lines from grades II through IV astrocytomas developed from our Nf1-/+;Trp53-/+cis mouse model and have used this panel to characterize signal transduction pathways and inhibitors that are candidate therapeutic targets for astrocytoma and glioblastoma. We show that these tumors express platelet-derived growth factor receptor-α, epidermal growth factor receptor, and their respective ligands to varying degrees. We find that both the MEK and PI3K signaling pathways downstream of epidermal growth factor receptor and platelet-derived growth factor receptor-α are necessary for full proliferation of astrocytoma cells; however, inhibition of the PI3K pathway is more effective than inhibition of MEK at blocking cell growth. We have examined inhibitors of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway and find that PI-103 and TCN show particular promise for inhibiting growth in Nf1 and Trp53 mutant astrocytoma cells.  相似文献
