Effects of diet on the management of struvite uroliths in dogs and cats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Results of experimental and clinical investigations have confirmed the importance of dietary modifications in medical protocols designed to promote dissolution and prevention of some kinds of uroliths. Change in the composition of dietary ingredients is one example of a method to reduce the quantity of lithogenic crystalloids in urine. The current study shows evidence of the positive effects of one of the commercial therapeutic foods on improvement of struvite urolithiasis, in different cases of cats and dogs performed at Kiev University, Ukraine.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) is a main health problem in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. The effect of pretransplant HCV infection on survival among ESRD patients who have undergone renal transplantation is controversial. We report the results of a large monocenter study that evaluated the effect of hepatitis C on the patient, and on graft survival in renal-transplanted patients who received living donated allograft. METHODS: A historical cohort study, we investigated all 1006 patients who received a living kidney transplant at Baghiatollah Medical Center in Tehran, Iran, between March 1995 and October 2001 (up to 85 months follow up). Patients' sera had been routinely assayed for anti-HCV antibodies and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) at the time of transplantation. The HBsAg-positive patients were excluded from the survival analysis. Survivals were examined using Kaplan-Meier analysis and compared using the log-rank test. Multivariate analysis was performed using Cox's model. RESULTS: Forty-five patients (4.5%) were anti-HCV-antibody positive. Anti-HCV-antibody-positive patients spent a longer time on dialysis and had a higher rate of retransplantation. There were no differences in recipients' sex and age and donors' age between the two groups. The 7-year patient survival rate was 89.9% in the anti-HCV-antibody-positive group and 95.5% in the HCV-negative group (P = 0.74). Seven-year graft survival was 82.0% and 75.0% in the anti-HCV-antibody-positive and HCV-negative groups, respectively (P = 0.39). In the multivariate analysis, age was the only significant parameter correlated with patient survival (P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: HCV infection does not seem to influence patient and graft survival within a medium-time follow up in living allograft recipients, and anti-HCV-antibody positive status (alone) is not a contraindication for renal transplantation. However, further studies are needed to better define the role of HCV infection in long-term prognosis.  相似文献

PurposeIn order to clarify the role of the optic nerve (ON) as a load on ocular rotation, we developed a finite element model (FEM) of incremental adduction induced by active contractility of extraocular muscles (EOMs), with and without tethering by the ON.MethodsThree-dimensional (3-D) horizontal rectus EOM geometries were obtained from magnetic resonance imaging of five healthy adults, and measured constitutive tissue properties were used. Active and passive strain energies of EOMs were defined using ABAQUS (Dassault Systemes) software. All deformations were assumed to be caused by EOM twitch activation that rotated the eye about a fixed center. The medial rectus (MR) muscle was commanded to additionally contract starting from 26 degrees adducted position, and the lateral rectus (LR) to relax, further adducting the eye either with or without loading by the ON. Tridimensional heat maps were generated to represent the stress and strain distributions.ResultsTensions in the EOMs were physiologically plausible during incremental adduction. Force in the MR increased from 10 gm at 26 degrees adduction to approximately 28 gm at 32 degrees adduction. Under identical MR contraction, adduction with ON loading reached 32 degrees but 36 degrees without it. Maximum and minimum principal strains within the MR were 16% and 22%, respectively, but when ON loading was included, resulting stress and strain were concentrated at the optic disc.ConclusionsThis physiologically plausible method of simulating EOM activation can provide realistic input to model biomechanical behavior of active and passive tissues in the orbit to clarify biomechanical consequences of ON traction during adduction.  相似文献

Clomiphene citrate (CC), as a medication in male infertility, improves the sperm parameters in oral consumption but various detrimental side effects have been reported including testicular tumours, gynaecomastia, skin allergic reactions and ocular symptoms. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the in vitro effects of CC on sperm parameters and fertilisation rate in IVF protocol. Sperm samples of NMRI adult mice were divided into six groups: group 1 received no treatment (control group), while groups of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 (experimental groups) were incubated with the doses of 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 µg/ml of CC in culture medium respectively. Sperm parameters (viability, morphology and motility), DNA fragmentation levels and fertilisation rate in IVF were evaluated. The results demonstrated that the doses of 0.1 µg/ml (p = .000007 for viability and p = .00006 for fertilisation rate) and 1 µg/ml (p = .032 for viability and p = .005 for fertilisation rate) CC cause a significant improvements; also, the dose of 0.1 µg/ml CC found effective on sperm motility (p = .0003). In the field of IVF, the application of 0.1 and 1 µg/ml of CC in the culture medium may improve the sperm parameters in IVF protocol with no side effects.  相似文献

Neurodegenerative diseases are one of the most challenging subjects in medicine. Investigation of their underlying genetic or epigenetic factors is hampered by lack of suitable models. Patient‐specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) represent a valuable approach to provide a proper model for poorly understood mechanisms of neuronal diseases and the related drug screenings. miR‐124 and miR‐128 are the two brain‐enriched miRNAs with different time‐points of expression during neuronal development. Herein, we transduced human iPS cells with miR‐124 and miR‐128 harboring lentiviruses sequentially. The transduced plasmids contained GFP and puromycin antibiotic‐resistant genes for easier selection and identification. Morphological assessment and immunocytochemistry (overexpressions of beta‐tubulin and neuron‐specific enolase) confirmed that induced hiPS cells by miR‐124 and miR‐128 represent similar characteristics to those of mature neurons. In addition, the upregulation of neuron‐specific enolase, beta‐tubulin, Map2, GFAP, and BDNF was detected by quantitative real‐time PCR. In conclusion, it seems that our novel protocol remarks the combinatorial effect of miR‐124 and miR‐128 on neural differentiation in the absence of any extrinsic factor. Moreover, such cellular models could be used in personalized drug screening and applied for more effective therapies.  相似文献

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is common among patients undergoing haemodialysis, and liver disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in this population. Management of HCV-related liver disease is a major health concern in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing haemodialysis. To investigate the prevalence of HCV infection in patients on haemodialysis and its associated risk factors, we conducted a prospective case series study of 838 patients on haemodialysis in Tehran, Iran. Patients were selected randomly (cluster sampling) and all were screened for anti-HCV antibodies, using ELISA 3rd generation and confirmed by using RIBA 2nd generation. We found that 111 patients (13.2%) were infected. By applying univariate analysis, longer duration on haemodialysis (P = 0.000), more weekly dialysis sessions (P = 0.03), history of blood transfusion (P = 0.03) and history of previous renal transplantation (P = 0.01) were found to be associated with a higher rate of HCV infection. Multivariate analysis revealed that only length of time on dialysis (P = 0.000) and history of blood transfusion (P = 0.02) were significantly associated with HCV infection. The more the units transfused, the higher the rate of HCV infection. Our results suggest that early transplantation and avoidance of blood transfusion, as much as possible, are the two most important practical interventions to reduce the HCV exposure rate in our patients on haemodialysis.  相似文献

Background: Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world. People believe that opium improves blood glucose and lipid profiles in these patients and controversial studies show the effect of consumption of opium in controlling these indices. Accordingly, this study aimed to compare the serum levels of blood indices such as fasting blood glucose (FBS), Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and lipid profile in opium users and non-users in type ΙΙ diabetic patients.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, among type II diabetic patients referred to the Diabetes Clinic of Birjand 45 opium users and 135 non-users were selected and entered the study by the convenience sampling method.

Results: The results of this study showed that the mean serum levels of FBS, HbA1c, and serum lipid profiles were not significantly different between the two groups of opium users and non-users, but the levels of triglyceride (TG) were significantly 0.18 unit higher in the opium users, compared to non-opium users.

Conclusion: According to the results, the use of opium does not affect the indices of blood glucose, HbA1c and serum lipid profiles except triglyceride in diabetic patients. The general belief that opioid use reduces biochemical indices does not seem to be correct.
