“When I get married…”: Contributing factors to intimate partner violence among married Jordanian women: A qualitative study

The authors in this study have explored and sought to gain an understanding of the contributing factors related to intimate partner violence among married Jordanian women. A qualitative research design using ten semi-structured interviews was used. Our analysis revealed two main themes: “when I get married” and “the role of family”. Financial, cultural and sexual factors were found to be vital in shaping the overall path of IPV. Therefore, if IPV is to be addressed carefully, then a multi-approach strategy within the social, legal and political levels of society is urgently needed.     

Neuromuscular scoliosis treated by segmental third-generation instrumented spinal fusion

We aimed to investigate whether the outcome and complications of surgical treatment of neuromuscular curves with segmental third-generation instrumentation could compare with those reported with standard second-generation instrumentation. The clinical and radiologic data of a single surgeon's consecutive series of patients with neuromuscular scoliosis treated with two types of newer-generation instrumentation and posterior or anteroposterior approaches were retrospectively and independently reviewed. The results of this study support the concept that third-generation instrumentation is able to provide at least as good results as second-generation instrumentation in the treatment of neuromuscular scoliosis patients, at the expense of a lower complication rate.     

Estimated number of leprosy cases in the world.

Planning for disease control requires estimates of the number of leprosy patients from local to global levels. From the mid-sixties to the mid-eighties, global estimates appeared to be constant at between 10 and 12 million. The introduction of multidrug therapy (MDT) in many countries and the consequent reduction of prevalence of the disease has necessitated a reassessment of the global estimate. Based on available information and its interpretation, the number of leprosy cases in the world in 1991 has been estimated at 5.5 million. The number of individuals with deformities due to leprosy, including persons now cured of the disease, has been estimated at between two and three million.
