AIM: To explore the changes in lens thickness and density with age.
METHODS: A Chinese population-based retrospective study was performed. A total of 497 individuals (490 right eyes and 495 left eyes), ranging from 3 to 69 years old were included. Lens images obtained from IOL Master 700 were used to measure lens thickness and density. Piecewise regression model was chosen to illustrate the relationship of lens thickness and density with age.
RESULTS: The proportion of people aged 3-18, 19-40, over 40 was 38.6%, 50.9% and 10.5% respectively. The whole lens thickness decreased with age during the first 7 years of life, kept stable from 8 to 16 years old, and then increased at the rate of about 27 µm per year. The thickness of the lens cortex and nucleus tended to decrease first and then increase with age, which was dependent on age stages. The whole lens density also decreased with age until 7 years old. The increasing rate of lens density was different in different age groups. The whole lens density increased rapidly from 7 to 22 years old and slowed down after 22 years old. Similarly, the changing tendency of lens cortical and nuclear density differed in different age phases.
CONCLUSION: Both lens thickness and density are significantly associated with age, whereas they do not change linearly with age. Moreover, it is necessary to increase the population over 40 years old and conduct further research. 相似文献
AIM: To evaluate the predictive factors of postoperative corneal astigmatism change in ptosis patients who underwent ptosis surgical repair.
METHODS: Patients who underwent levator resection at Oculoplastic service of the Department of Ophthalmology, Naresuan University Hospital, Thailand between September 2017 and August 2019 were retrospectively evaluated. Changes in degree and axis of corneal astigmatism after ptosis surgery were compared based on patient factors consisting of age at operation, sex, preoperative margin-reflex distance (MRD) 1, and preoperative degree and axis of corneal astigmatism.
RESULTS: Forty-two eyes of 28 patients were included in the study. Wilcoxon signed ranks test showed a significant postoperative corneal astigmatism change only in a subgroup of eyes with preoperative astigmatism of ≥1.5 diopters (D; P=0.006). Furthermore, 72.2% (13/18) of the eyes with preoperative astigmatism of ≥1.5 D showed a reduction of astigmatism after eyelid surgery, with the mean astigmatic change of 0.65 D. Majority of preoperative eyes demonstrated with-the-rule astigmatism pattern (45.2%), of which 57.9% showed a reduced degree of astigmatism.
CONCLUSION: In patients undergoing ptosis surgery, the data demonstrate for the first time the association between postoperative corneal astigmatism change and a preoperative corneal astigmatism of ≥1.5 D. Thus, we encourage considering severity of corneal astigmatism prior to cataract or refractive surgery planning in ptosis patients, especially with toric-intraocular lens, to avoid the possibility of calculation error. 相似文献
PurposeTo evaluate in vivo parameters as biomarkers of limbal stem cell function and to establish an objective system that detects and stage limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD).MethodsA total of 126 patients (172 eyes) with LSCD and 67 normal subjects (99 eyes) were included in this observational cross-sectional comparative study. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy, in vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy (IVCM), and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) were performed to obtain the following: clinical score, cell morphology score, basal cell density (BCD), central corneal epithelial thickness (CET), limbal epithelial thickness (LET), total corneal nerve fiber length (CNFL), corneal nerve fiber density (CNFD), corneal nerve branch density (CNBD), and tortuosity coefficient. Their potential correlations with the severity of LSCD were investigated, and cutoff values were determined.ResultsAn increase clinical score correlated with a decrease in central cornea BCD, limbal BCD, CET, mean LET, maximum LET, CNFL, CNFD, CNBD, and tortuosity coefficient. Regression analyses showed that central cornea BCD, CET and CNFL were the best parameters to differentiate LSCD from normal eyes (Coef = 3.123, 3.379, and 2.223; all p < 0.05). The rank correlation analysis showed a similar outcome between the clinical scores and the central cornea BCD (ρ = 0.79), CET (ρ = 0.82), and CNFL (ρ = 0.71). A comprehensive LSCD grading formula based on a combination of these parameters was established.ConclusionsA comprehensive staging system combining clinical presentation, central cornea BCD, CET, and CNFL is established to accurately and objectively diagnose LSCD and stage its severity. 相似文献
BackgroundPre-pregnancy obesity is a well-recognized risk factor for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). There is a continuity of obesity from childhood to adolescence and then adulthood. However, it is unknown whether early childhood obesity predicts GDM.MethodsWe investigated the prospective association of childhood triceps skinfold thickness and body mass index (BMI) with GDM risk among women from the Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy (MUSP), a multigenerational cohort study. A multiple logistic regression model was applied to estimate the odds of experiencing GDM by childhood skinfold thickness and BMI.ResultsOut of 552 women in the study for whom data were available on triceps skinfold thickness and BMI at average age 5 (range 3–7) years old, 52 (9.42%) developed GDM by average age 30 (range 28–33) years. We found that the risk of developing GDM was greater among women who had greater skinfold thickness but not greater BMI at age 5 years. Women who were classified as overweight or obese based on skinfold thickness at age 5 years had an increased odds ratio of GDM compared to women who had normal skinfold thickness. This association remained significant after adjustment for the potential confounders (OR 2.74; 95% confidence interval = 1.28–5.86).ConclusionThe risk of developing GDM was associated with higher skinfold thickness at age 5 years.
