Three-dimensional measurement of radiographic bone–implant contact lengths of zygomatic implants in zygomatic bone: a retrospective study of 66 implants in 28 patients

Zygomatic implant treatment is widely applied for severe maxillary atrophy to help rehabilitate the maxillary dentition. This retrospective study was performed to evaluate the actual radiographic bone–implant contact (rBIC) lengths of zygomatic implants. The records of 28 patients who underwent zygomatic implant surgery and subsequent follow-up examinations between August 2013 and September 2018 in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital were reviewed. The surgeries were performed by a single surgeon using the same treatment protocol. All patients had a computed tomography scan at 1 year after the surgery. Using three-dimensional imaging software, an investigator measured the rBIC lengths of 66 implants and documented their clinical status. The implant survival rate was 100%. The mean rBIC length was significantly longer in male patients than in female patients (20.80 ± 5.88 mm versus 17.79 ± 6.34 mm; P = 0.028). The mean rBIC length of double zygomatic implants was significantly longer when compared to that of single implants (21.11 ± 6.23 mm versus 17.75 ± 5.85 mm; P = 0.027). This article is novel in reporting the exact rBIC lengths of zygomatic implants in a clinical setting. The results showed that zygomatic implants are a viable treatment modality for full-mouth rehabilitation.

Software compensation improves the analysis of heterogeneous tumor samples stained for multiparameter DNA flow cytometry

Background: High concentrations of propidium iodide (PI), in combination with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) and R-phycoerythrin (RPE) used for multiparameter DNA flow cytometry (FCM), cause spectral cross-talk into the green fluorescence channel (FL1). We have evaluated the use of post-acquisition software compensation (N-Color Compensation) in order to correct this spectral cross-talk caused by PI. Method: Cell mixtures were prepared consisting of keratin 8/18 FITC labeled, keratin 8/18 RPE labeled, and unlabeled MCF-7 breast carcinoma cells. DNA was stained with PI (100 μM). Post-acquisition software compensation was applied to correct the spectral cross-talk of PI fluorescence. Secondly, the distribution of the Ki-67 (FITC) protein during the cell cycle (PI) of SiHa cervical carcinoma cells (no software compensation) was compared to the Ki-67 expression pattern of SiHa cells, simultaneously stained for keratin 8 (RPE), after applying software compensation. Finally, software compensation was used to compare the relative levels of PCNA and p53 expression in two clinical ovarian cancer ascites specimens, stained for PCNA or p53 (FITC), keratin 8/18 (RPE), and DNA (PI), with a known p53 status (positive and negative, respectively). Results: The Ki-67 cell cycle-dependent pattern of a triply stained sample (Ki-67 (FITC), keratin 8 (RPE), and DNA (PI)) is restored after software compensation and the results are comparable to the Ki-67 distribution of a sample stained solely for Ki-67 and DNA. P53 expression could only be resolved after using software compensation in the p53 positive ovarian ascites (OA) sample. Conclusions: We conclude that software compensation is a robust and reliable post-acquisition method for the correction of RPE/PI spectral cross-talk, permitting better identification of weakly expressed proteins in heterogeneous clinical tumor samples stained for multiple cellular antigens and DNA using PI.

自动麻醉记录系统

该研究将通过M icrosoft V isua l C 6.0和V isua l B as ic 6.0为主要的开发工具,SQL Server为数据库,采用客户端/服务器结构,设计出基于W indow s操作系统,网络环境下运行的应用程序,并将它们用于自动麻醉记录。该自动记录系统负责处理麻醉全过程中的相关病人信息,对医护现场的多种医疗设备:如监护仪、静脉输液泵、麻醉机等进行数据的实时自动采集、加工以及集成等,并在综合病人相关信息及生理参数的基础上自动输出麻醉记录单。该记录系统不仅提高了临床医师的工作效率,减低了麻醉医师的劳动强度,而且使麻醉记录更加准确和完整。     

Recurrent wavefront morphologies: A method for quantifying the complexity of epicardial activation patterns

We have developed a method for quantifying the complexity of activation patterns observed during ventricular fibrillation (VF) that is based on our previously reported methodology for decomposing epicardial mapping data into a set of isolated wavefronts. One-half second datasets are acquired from a 21×24 array of unipolar electrodes (1 mm spacing), and the wavefronts are isolated. A correlation technique is used to compute the similarity between all possible pairs of the isolated wavefronts. From these data, the wavefronts are sorted into clusters, each of which represents a recurring wavefront morphology. We define multiplicity (M) as the number of clusters needed to account for 90% of the total activations in the VF episode.M measures the complexity of the rhythm. In repetitive patterns (e.g., sinus rhythm),M=1, indicating that the same morphology repeatedly activates the mapped region. Typically, in VF,M>1, with larger numbers representing more complex, disorganized patterns. As an example, we computedM at 5, 10, 15, and 20 sec after electrical induction of VF in six pigs.M decreased significantly (p<0.001), suggesting increasing organization during this period.
