Preparing Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Students for Role Transition Through Hospital Immersion

The study explored adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP) student’s self-perception of confidence and competence in essential domains of nurse practitioner (NP) skills. A preclinical hospital immersion experience was developed to improve transition to the ACACNP role. AGACNP students participated in once-weekly sessions for 3 consecutive weeks, with 14 students completing the experience over a 3-year period. Data showed a 28.7% improvement in student’s self-perception of confidence and competence, with statistically significant improvement in clinical decision-making skills and NP role. AGACNP students requested additional days and appreciated direct faculty feedback, while faculty efficiently supported AGACNP role transition.     

Overview of Recognition and Prevention of Child Sex Trafficking in the Primary Care Setting: A Primer for Nurse Practitioners

Child sex trafficking (CST) has become a global public health crisis and is a $150 billion criminal enterprise. Nurse practitioners are key in the recognition and prevention of CST in health care settings. Evidence demonstrates that up to 80% of CST victims have had a recent health care encounter. It is the role of the NP in practice to understand risk factors, screen for CST, and educate parents and caregivers on signs of victimization and prevention.     

Fathers of children with autism spectrum disorder: Their perceptions of paternal role a predictor of caregiving satisfaction,self-efficacy and burden

BackgroundThe positive effect of a father’s involvement in children’s upbringing is now recognised. However, research on fathers raising children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are still few. This study examines the relationship between the perception, fathers of children with ASD have of the importance of their role in the development of their children and the feelings (self-efficacy, caregiving burden, satisfaction) they express about their parenting experience.MethodSixty-three Swiss Italian fathers of children with ASD completed The Role of the Father Questionnaire (ROFQ), three sub-scales of the Caregiver Survey, a subtest of the Child Adjustment and Parent Efficacy Scale and a home-made questionnaire measuring Perceived Social Support.ResultsThe results from hierarchical multiple regression analyses show that the importance that fathers attach to the paternal role predicts positively their caregiving satisfaction and their feeling of self-efficacy. The children’s challenging behaviours predict positively the caregiving burden whereas the assessment of social support predicts it negatively.ConclusionsThe perception of the importance of the paternal role needs to be considered in the support offered to families with a child with ASD. A better understanding of the fathers’ feelings could be of value for the programmes.

Analysis of jump load during a volleyball season in terms of player role

ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to analyze the jump load performed by top-level volleyball players during an entire training season in terms of the player role, training period, type of daily training, and quality of opposition in the subsequent match.DesignLongitudinal panel observational study.MethodsThe total number of jumps performed by players was recorded through 174 training days distributed in 32 weeks during the 2016/2017 season (pre-season, 5 weeks; in-season, 27 weeks). The players role were classified as middle-blocker, outside-hitter, opposite and setter (the libero was omitted). A generalized mixed linear model was performed (with Bonferroni post hoc test at p < 0.05) to assess the effect of training variables and the repeated-measures data of players’ jumps along various training days. Additionally, the effect sizes at 95% confidence intervals were calculated to compare the jump load between players’ role and training variables.ResultsThe results showed a significant and moderate higher amount of jumps performed by middle-blockers regardless the type of macro- or micro-cycle, the micro-cycle phase, the type of training and the quality of match opposition. Contrarily, the setter performs the least jump load in all variables analyzed. Only the players’ role, macro-cycle and micro-cycle phase had significant effects on the player's jump load variation along the season.ConclusionsThis information could be useful to guide the monitoring and preparation process for coaches and physical trainers. These values allow differentiating between players’ role and could be used as references values in order to avoid injuries whereas performance increase along the season.
