ObjectiveTo analyze the effects of electrolysis, through a medium frequency current, associated to aerobic physical activity in the body composition of young women.MethodsThe study was composed of 34 sedentary women (24.35 ± 4.43 years, 71.30 ± 7.08 kg, 1.61 ± 0.06 m, 27.31 ± 1.67 kg/m2) which were evaluated for their anthropometric measures and body composition. The volunteers were randomly assigned to two group: Electrolyphysis plus Aerobic Exercise (gEEA): 17 volunteers were submitted to the application, for 60 min , of the Aussie current, followed by aerobic physical activity (77% of HRmax) on the trampoline for 40 min, through video-lessons of Jump; and Aerobic Exercise group (gEA): 17 volunteers performed only physical activity following the same parameters mentioned above. Each group performed its protocols twice weekly, for 5 weeks, totaling 10 sessions. For the data analysis, measures repeated ANOVA was performed to compare the means of the variables analyzed before and after the treatment protocols using the SPSS - 21.0 software, adopting a p ≤ 0.05.ResultsAlthough gEEA decreased suprailiac skinfold (p = 0.04), abdominal skinfold (p = 0.03) and circumference at umbilical scar (p = 0.02) in an intragroup analysis, these means differences in anthropometric measures were not important between-groups (p > 0.05). Furthermore, there were no effect of treatment on body composition (p > 0.05).ConclusionTo this studied condition, our results suggested that application of medium frequency electrolysis did not enhance the losses on anthropometric measures and body composition.

BackgroundFew studies have investigated the impact of web-based physical activity interventions on mental health outcomes. Therefore, this study examined the impact of a web-based personally tailored physical activity intervention on depression, anxiety, stress and quality of life.Methods501 participants were randomised into either a control group or a pooled intervention condition who received a 3-month web-based personally tailored physical activity intervention. Previously, this intervention has demonstrated to improve self-reported physical activity, but not device-measured physical activity. At baseline, 3- and 9-months, depression, anxiety and stress were assessed using the DASS21, and quality of life was assessed using the SF-12V2. General linear mixed models examined differences between groups over time.ResultsMost participants (>80%) reported normal levels of depression, anxiety or stress. Relative to baseline levels, significant reductions of depression, anxiety, stress and the SF12 mental health component were observed in the pooled intervention group at 3 and 9 months. Relative to the control group, significant reductions were observed in the pooled intervention group for depression and stress (3-months only) and anxiety (3- and 9-months), but not quality of life.ConclusionA web-based physical activity intervention can result in positive mental health outcomes, even in the absence of device-measured physical activity improvements. However, these findings need to be confirmed in future studies.Trial registration numberACTRN12615000057583.

BackgroundIt is unknown if improvements in gait velocity following an aerobic cycling intervention are accompanied by improved gait biomechanics in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) or if gait abnormalities are exaggerated in response to increased velocity.Research questionCan an 8-week aerobic cycling intervention elicit improvements in locomotor function in individuals with mild to moderate PD?MethodsA secondary analysis of data from a randomized clinical trial was conducted in individuals with mild to moderate idiopathic PD (N = 28). Participants were randomized to an aerobic cycling intervention (PDex, N = 14) consisting of 24 sessions at a targeted aerobic intensity of 60–80% of heart rate reserve or to a no intervention control group (PDcontrol, N = 14). Change in comfortable walking speed in addition to gait kinematics, kinetics, and spatiotemporal variables using motion capture were obtained at baseline and end of treatment (EOT).ResultsThe PDex group made significantly greater improvements in the primary outcome, change in comfortable gait velocity, from 0.86 ± 0.24 m/s at baseline to 1.00 ± 0.23 m/s at EOT compared to the PDcontrol group who declined from 0.91 ± 0.23 m/s at baseline to 0.80 ± 0.29 at EOT (P = 0.002). Improvements in gait velocity for the PDex group were accompanied by improvements in gait kinematics, kinetics, and spatiotemporal parameters, while the PDcontrol group demonstrated slight worsening in all gait parameters over the 8-week period.SignificanceThe 8-week moderate- to high-intensity cycling intervention elicited significantly greater improvements in gait velocity compared to the PDcontrol group. Increased gait velocity was accompanied by normalization of gait biomechanics, rather than an exaggeration of existing gait deviations. Aerobic cycling may be a viable treatment approach to improve gait velocity and gait biomechanics in individuals with mild to moderate PD and may mitigate declines in mobility.

IntroductionEvidence for the relationship between movement behaviors and mental health among adolescents is inconclusive. We aimed to identify profiles of digital media use (including related bedtime delay) and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) in adolescence, and to examine whether preadolescent mental health predicted later behavior profiles.MethodsThis study included 1285 participants assessed at 11 years of age, and followed-up four years later. Participants completed the Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC), Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children (CES-DC) and Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) at baseline, and reported digital media use (active and passive use, gaming, and related bedtime delays) and LTPA at follow-up. A latent class approach was employed to identify behavior profiles, membership of which was then predicted with mental health and covariates, including baseline digital media use and LTPA.ResultsWe identified four behavior profiles: 1) high digital media use/moderate LTPA (20% of adolescents; 78% boys), 2) moderate digital media use/high LTPA (31%; 28%), 3) high digital media use/high LTPA (26%; 15%), 4) high passive digital media use and gaming/low LTPA (23%; 89%). After adjusting for covariates, higher LTPA and better perception of athletic competence at baseline associated with higher odds of belonging to any other profile than to the unhealthiest profile (4) at follow-up. Symptoms of depression or anxiety did not associate with later behavior profiles.ConclusionsLTPA and related self-esteem seem to be stronger predictors of future digital media use and LTPA behavior during adolescence than mental health symptoms alone.

ObjectiveTo investigate long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL) changes over time in younger compared to older disease-free breast cancer survivors who participated in a prospective randomized exercise trial.MethodsSurvivors (aged 35–68 years) were randomized to a 12-month exercise trial after adjuvant treatment and followed up for ten years. HRQoL was assessed with the generic 15D instrument during follow-up and the younger (baseline age ≤ 50) and older (age >50) survivors’ HRQoL was compared to that of the age-matched general female population (n = 892). The analysis included 342 survivors.ResultsThe decline of HRQoL compared to the population was steeper and recovery slower in the younger survivors (p for interaction < 0.001). The impairment was also larger among the younger survivors (p = 0.027) whose mean HRQoL deteriorated for three years after treatment and started to slowly improve thereafter but still remained below the population level after ten years (difference −0.017, 95% CI: −0.031 to −0.004). The older survivors’ mean HRQoL gradually approached the population level during the first five years but also remained below it at ten years (difference −0.019, 95% CI: −0.031 to −0.007). The largest differences were on the dimensions of sleeping and sexual activity, on which both age groups remained below the population level throughout the follow-up.ConclusionsHRQoL developed differently in younger and older survivors both regarding the most affected dimensions of HRQoL and the timing of the changes during follow-up. HRQoL of both age groups remained below the population level even ten years after treatment.

IntroductionCognitive deficits occur in Parkinson's disease (PD). Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is associated with better cognitive performance in aging especially in executive function (EF) and memory. The association between CRF and cognitive performance is understudied in people with PD. Brain structures underlying associations also remains unknown. This cross-sectional study examined the associations between CRF and cognitive performance in PD. We also examined associations between CRF and brain structures impacted in PD. Mediation analysis were conducted to examine whether brain structures impacted in PD mediate putative associations between CRF and cognitive performance.MethodsIndividuals with PD (N = 33) underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CRF evaluation (estimated VO2max), and neuropsychological assessment. Composite cognitive scores of episodic memory, EF, attention, language, and visuospatial functioning were generated. Structural equation models were constructed to examine whether MRI volume estimates (thalamus and pallidum) mediated associations between CRF and cognitive performance (adjusting for age, education, PD disease duration, sex, MDS-UPDRS motor score, and total intracranial volume).ResultsHigher CRF was associated with better episodic memory (Standardized β = 0.391; p = 0.008), EF (Standardized β = 0.324; p = 0.025), and visuospatial performance (Standardized β = 0.570; p = 0.005). Higher CRF was associated with larger thalamic (Standardized β = 0.722; p = 0.004) and pallidum (Standardized β = 0.635; p = 0.004) volumes. Thalamic volume mediated the association between higher CRF and better EF (Indirect effect = 0.309) and episodic memory (Indirect effect = 0.209) performance (p < 0.05). The pallidum did not significantly mediate associations between CRF and cognitive outcomes.ConclusionThe thalamus plays an important role in the association between CRF and both EF and episodic memory in PD.
