In this study, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) microparticles having pH-sensitive properties were loaded with sodium lignosulfonate (SLS), a corrosion inhibitor. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV–VIS spectrophotometer (UV-vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and attenuated total reflection-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) were applied to evaluate the properties of the synthetic microparticles. This material could lead to the release of corrosion inhibitor under different pH conditions of the aqueous media. However, the extent of release of the corrosion inhibitor in the acidic media was higher, leading to enhanced shielding effect of the Q235 steel. These microparticles can serve as anti-corrosion additive for epoxy resin-coated Q235 steel. Electrochemical experiments were used to assess the anti-corrosive ability of the epoxy coatings in simulated concrete pore (SCP) solution, confirming the superior corrosion inhibition of the epoxy coating via incorporation of 5 wt % calcium carbonate microparticles loaded with SLS (SLS/CaCO3). BackgroundLithium is a helpful adjunct to patients undergoing ECT. However, only case reports and limited data suggest increase risk of delirium. Thus, this continues to be a controversial issue.ObjectiveIn this study, we examine 1) The association and odds of delirium and cognitive problems with ECT and lithium (ECT + Li) combination compared to ECT alone, 2) If positively associated, would this association vary by both type of mood episode and type of disorder?MethodsA national sample of 64,728 adult psychiatric inpatients across the US (identified from a total data of about 70 million total discharges annually) was analyzed using linear-by-linear association and logistic regression to assess the odds ratio (OR) for delirium and cognitive impairment for those treated with lithium (N = 158), ECT (N = 64148), or ECT + Li (N = 422) after adjusting for demographics and psychiatric diagnoses.ResultsThe prevalence of delirium was higher in the ECT + Lithium group (5.7%) vs. ECT only (0.6%) or lithium only groups (0%). Patients managed with ECT + Lithium have 11.7-fold higher odds (95% CI 7.55–17.99, P < 0.001) of delirium compared to ECT alone. In the ECT + Li group, delirium prevalence was 7.8% in unipolar depression, 3.4% in bipolar depressed, 0% in bipolar mania.ConclusionThese results are surprising given the fading concern about delirium association with ECT + lithium combination. The high odds in the combination group warrant clinical caution, use of lower lithium doses (if combinations cannot be avoided), and vigilance regarding early signs of delirium. Common sugar alcohols used as artificial sweeteners and components of polymer networks represent low molecular weight polyhydroxymethylenes (PHMs) with the general formula [CH(OH)]nH2 but very low degree of polymerization (n = 2–6). Herein high molecular weight PHM (n >> 100) unparalleled in nature is tailored for 3D printing and medical applications by free radical polymerization of 1,3‐dioxol‐2‐one vinylene carbonate to produce polyvinylene carbonate (PVCA) which yields PHM by hydrolysis. Furthermore, PVCA is solution processable and enables PHM functionalization, membrane formation, and extrusion‐based 3D printing. Opposite to cellulose, amorphous PHM is plasticized by water and is readily functionalized via PVCA aminolysis/hydrolysis to produce polyhydroxymethylene urethane (PHMU), enable PHM crosslinking and coupling of PHM with amine‐functional components like gelatin. After hydrolysis/aminolysis the original PVCA shapes are retained. PVCA solution casting yields PVCA and PHM which exhibits uniform and hierarchic pore architectures. Asymmetric membranes, hydrogels, PHM/collagen blends, and electrospun nonwovens of PVCA, PHM, and PHMU are readily tailored for medical applications. 3D printing of PVCA dispersions containing hydroxyapatite affords porous PVCA, PHMU, and PHM scaffolds useful in regenerative medicine. PHM and functionalized PHMs as carbohydrate‐inspired multifunctional materials indicate in vitro biocompatibility and hold great promise for applications in medicine and health care. 相似文献

ObjectivesGlass ionomer cements (GIC) can be used to protect dentine following caries removal. However, GIC have little biological activity on biological repair processes, which means that neo-dentine formation remains reliant on limited endogenous regenerative processes. Wnt/β-catenin signalling is known to play a central role in stimulating tertiary dentine formation following tooth damage and can be stimulated by a range of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK3) antagonists, including lithium ions.MethodsHere, we created lithium-containing bioactive glass (BG) by substituting lithium for sodium ions in 45S5 BG. We then replaced between 10 and 40% of the powder phase of a commercial GIC with the lithium-substituted BG to create a range of formulations of ‘LithGlassGIC’. In vitro physical properties of the resulting glasses were characterised and their ability to stimulate reactionary dentine formation in mouse molars in vivo was tested.ResultsLithium release from LithGlassGIC increased with increasing lithium content in the cement. In common with unmodified commercial GIC, all formations of LithGlassGIC showed in vitro toxicity when measured using an indirect cell culture assay based on ISO10993:5, precluding direct pulp contact. However, in a murine non-exposed pulp model of tooth damage, LithGlassGIC quickly released lithium ions, which could be transiently detected in the saliva and blood. LithGlassGIC also enhanced the formation of tertiary dentine, resulting in a thickening of the dentine at the damage site that restored lost dentine volume. Dentine regeneration was likely mediated by upregulation of Wnt/β-catenin activity, as LithGlassGIC placed in TCF/Lef:H2B-GFP reporter mice showed enhanced GFP activity.SignificanceWe conclude that LithGlassGIC acts as a biological restorative material that promotes tertiary dentine formation and restores tooth structure. 相似文献

pH sensitives carbonate apatite (CA) has emerged as a targeted delivery vehicle for chemotherapeutics agent with tremendous potential to increase the effectivity of breast cancer treatment. The major challenge for intravenous delivery of drug-incorporated nanoparticles is their rapid opsonization, resulting in accumulation within the organs of reticuloendothelial system, such as liver and spleen. Therefore, surface modification by polyethylene glycol was implemented to improve the half-life of drug-particle complexes and enhance their uptake by target tissues. A simple, rapid, and sensitive triple quadrupole liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry method was developed and validated for quantification of gemcitabine in plasma, various organs and tumor tissues of mice with breast carcinoma, whereas sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, quadrupole-time of flight liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry and analysis by SwissProt.Mus_musculus database were performed for protein separation, identification, and homology search by comparing the de novo sequence tag. PEGylated CA exhibited almost 6-fold increase in gemcitabine accumulation in tumor with significant reduction in other organs within 1 h of intravenous administration, compared to free drug. In addition, plasma drug amount was found to be higher in PEGylated particles, implying their role in prolonging blood circulation time of particle-bound gemcitabine. Investigation of protein corona composition demonstrated notable reduction in opsonin interactions after PEGylation of CA particles. Overall, the results indicate that the composition and dynamics of protein corona subjected to alteration by PEGylation play crucial roles in affecting successful nanoparticle-based targeted delivery of a cytotoxic drug. 相似文献

To critically examine the effectiveness of lithium in preventing depressive symptoms (mixed and depressive episodes) in real life settings, taking into account adherence to drug treatment and its implications for the clinical costs of the disease. Overall, 72 patients with bipolar disorder initially treated with lithium carbonate were included and followed-up for 10 years. Patients were assessed every 8 weeks for morbidity and alcohol/drug consumption. Patients with good adherence to lithium had fewer episodes with depressive features than poor adherers (B?=?2.405, p?=?0.046) and also fewer manic and hypomanic episodes (B?=?2.572; p?<?0.001), after controlling for confounders. Time to relapse into a depressive or mixed episode and into a manic or hypomanic episode was shorter in patients with poor adherence. The costs of the 1.95?±?2.38 (mean?±?standard deviation) admissions of adherent patients through the 10 years of follow-up were €10,349, while the costs of the 6.25?±?4.92 admissions of non-adherent patients were €44,547. In clinical practice settings, long-term lithium salts seem to have a preventive effect on depressive symptoms. 相似文献

Background
Selenium is an essential element which shows protective properties against diverse harmful factors. Lithium compounds are widely used in medicine, but, in spite of undoubted beneficial effects, treatment with these compounds may lead to severe side effects, including renal, gastrointestinal, neurological, endocrine and metabolic disorders. This study was aimed at evaluating the influence of selenium and/or lithium on lithium, iron, zinc and copper content in rats’ erythrocytes as well as estimate the action of additional selenium on lithium exposure effects.Methods
The experiment was performed on four groups of rats (six animals each): control – received saline; Li – received 2.7 mg Li/kg b.w. as lithium carbonate; Se – received 0.5 mg Se/kg b.w. as sodium selenite; Se + Li – received simultaneously 0.5 mg Se/kg b.w. and 2.7 mg Li/kg b.w. (sodium selenite and lithium carbonate). The administration was performed for three weeks, once a day by stomach tube, in form of water solutions. In erythrocytes the content of lithium, iron, zinc and copper was determined using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy.Results
Lithium treatment insignificantly disturbed iron and zinc homeostasis as well as markedly increased lithium accumulation and copper content in rat erythrocytes. Selenium coadministration reversed those effects.Conclusions
The beneficial effect of selenium on disturbances of studied microelements homeostasis as well as on preventing lithium accumulation in erythrocytes in Li receiving animals allows suggesting that further research on selenium application as an adjuvant in lithium therapy is worth carrying on. 相似文献10.
AIM: To investigate chemical changes in calcium hydroxide introduced into human root canals as a medicament using Fourier transform-(FT) Raman spectroscopy. METHODOLOGY: Ten necrotic maxillary anterior teeth were selected in 10 patients. The teeth were divided into five treatment groups, according to the survey time. Root canal instrumentation was performed with hand instruments until the master apical file was size 40. Calcium hydroxide paste, in a 1 : 1.25 mixture by weight of powder and distilled water, was introduced directly into the root canal with a lentulo-spiral filler and then condensed with a finger plugger. The access cavity was sealed with a temporary dressing. After 2 and 4 days, then 2, 4 and 6 weeks, the calcium hydroxide paste was sampled with a K-file and then analysed using FT-Raman spectroscopy. The excitation source was an Nd : YAG laser with an excitation wavelength of 1064 nm. All spectra were taken with a laser power of 200 mW, 275-1185 scans, and 4 cm(-1) resolution. The conversion of calcium hydroxide to calcium carbonate was calculated on the basis of the spectral data obtained from the mixtures of both compounds. RESULTS: The calcium hydroxide paste in the apical region showed weak bands at 1088 and 284 cm(-1), in addition to bands associated with calcium hydroxide. The weak bands, assigned to calcium carbonate, became stronger with time. Calcium carbonate content increased rapidly in the first 2 days and then tended to increase slowly. Approximately 11% of the calcium hydroxide at the apical portion of the canal was converted to calcium carbonate after 6 weeks. However, little alteration of the paste was noticed in the samples from the middle portion of the canal. CONCLUSIONS: Calcium hydroxide medicament in root canals became transformed into calcium carbonate in the apical region within 2 days. Although the transformation continued with time, approximately 90% of the calcium hydroxide remained unchanged after 6 weeks. 相似文献
