Transport of hydrogen in elastic metals has been analysed in terms of an impedance-like non-linear transfer function (TF). The equilibrium in a membrane specimen is perturbed by a sinusoidal signal of the concentration of hydrogen, of large amplitude, applied to one of its surfaces. The fundamental harmonics of periodically reproducible flux at the same surface is considered as a response. The TF is defined as the ratio of the signal to the response. The power of the said TF in determining the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen in a metal–hydrogen system and its bulk elastic modulus was analysed for the example of α-phase Pd–H and Pd81Pt19–H systems. It has been found that such a TF is suitable for determination of the above parameters. Also, the sensitivity of these estimates to the uncertainty of concentration of hydrogen in the metal, its partial molar volume and the thickness of the specimen has been explored.  相似文献

Summary It is generally agreed that combined deficiency of selenium and vitamin E leads to several abnormalities including Kashin-Beck disease which is an endemic and chronic degenerative osteoarthrosis. The abnormalities can be reversed by the administration of various forms of selenium and vitamin E.The present study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary selenium and vitamin E on bone tissue and on the biomechanical properties of bone. Young rabbits of both sexes were fed with either a selenium- and vitamin E-adequate diet (control group), or a selenium- and vitamin E-deficient diet or a selenium-excess diet. The selenium-deficient diet resulted in a significant decrease in plasma selenium level and the selenium-excess diet resulted in a significant increase in the plasma selenium level with respect to the corresponding control values (p<0.05). The diets did not affect the blood cell counts considerably but erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity increased (decreased) relatively when the plasma selenium level increased (decreased) (p<0.05). The light microscopic investigations of the bone tissues of the two experimental groups indicate that the findings of the present work are compatible with osteomalacia. The biomechanical properties of the bones from the three groups were determined experimentally with bending tests. Both the Se-and vitamin E-deficient diet and the Se-excess diet decreased the biomechanical strength of the bones significantly while the bones belonging to the control group always had the largest modulus of elasticity (p<0.05).  相似文献

The shear modulus of the vocal fold is an essential parameter required to enhance our understanding of how the vocal fold operates, to develop mathematical models of phonatation, and to provide benchmarks to quantify the effectiveness of surgical procedures. The authors announced the successful deployment of an instrument to measure vocal fold elasticity in vivo last year, and now present the data taken from eight patients in vivo. The shear modulus was measured at the mid-membranous point, in a transverse direction with respect to the axis drawn between the anterior commissure and vocal process. The range of mean shear modulus results is 701–2,225 Pa, with a mean value of 1,371 Pa.  相似文献

Summary The phenomena of stress-relaxation and capillary outward filtration were studied in the isolated rabbit ear, perfused with blood at constant flow. The volume increase, as measured by the plethysmograph, following elevation of venous outflow pressure to 20 mm Hg for 4 min was predominantly due to capillary outward filtration in the norepinephrine constricted vascular bed (0.5 g/min). With papaverine induced dilatation (0.08 mg/min) this persistent volume increase could be attributed mainly to stress-relaxation of the veins. Engorgement of venous vessels as well as capillary outward filtration led to an increase of the ear volume that is measured by the plethysmographic technique. The photographic-photoelectric measurement of venous diameter changes was used in these experiments to distinguish intravascular from extravascular volume changes. The moduli of volume elasticity were calculated for smaller and larger veins (mean diameter 0.133 mm and 0.553 mm) with norepinephrine constriction. Dilation of the ascending aorta, associated with Marfan Syndrome, bicuspid aortic valve, or advanced age, may lead to aortic dissection and rupture. Mathematical models can be used to assess the relative importance of increased wall stresses and decreased strength in these mechanical failures. To obtain needed inputs for such models, mechanical properties of dilated human ascending aorta were measured in vitro. Specimens for opening angle, biaxial elastic, and uniaxial circumferential strength tests were cut from excised tissue obtained from 54 patients (age 18–81 years) undergoing elective aortic graft replacement surgery. Opening angle was significantly greater in patients older than 50 years (262°±76°, n=21) compared to younger patients (202°±70°, n=13 All biaxial elastic specimens n=40 exhibited nonlinear stress-strain behavior. Rapid increases in circumferential and axial stresses occurred at lower strains in the older patient group than in the younger. Mean strength was significantly lower in older patients (1.35±0.37 MPa, n=14) than younger (2.04 ± 0.46 MPa, n=11, age <50 years). These changes in mechanical properties suggest that age may influence the risk of aortic dissection or rupture of dilated ascending aorta. © 2002 Biomedical Engineering Society. Summary Ground reaction forces and mechanical power were investigated when the subjects walked normally, while they were racing or running at four speeds, and when they performed the running long jump take-off. In addition, the apparent spring constants of the support leg in eccentric and concentric phases were investigated at the four running speeds, during the running long jump take-off, and in the triple jump. Six club level track and field athletes, four national level long jumpers, and six national level triple jumpers took part in the study. Cinematographic technique and a mathematical model of hopping (Alexander and Vernon 1975) were employed in the analysis. Force and power values were found to vary in the following order (from highest to lowest): long jump take-off, maximal running speed, submaximal running (80, 60, and 40% of maximum speed), racing gait, and normal gait. The data disclosed that the measured parameters had the highest values in the long jump take-off performed by the long jump athletes. Their peak values were: resultant ground reaction force 3270±74 N and mechanical power 160.1±10.5 J×kg–1×s–1. For the track and field athletes the values were 2010±80 N and 126.0±12.6 J ×kg–1×s–1. The apparent spring constant values of the support leg in the national level jumper group were in eccentric phase 30.54±8.38 N×mm–1 ×kg–1 and in concentric phase 0.129±0.012 N×mm–1×kg–1. In the track and field athletes the values were 13.97±1.01 N×mm–1×kg–1 and 0.093±0.003 N×mm–1×kg–1, respectively. In general, the increase in force and mechanical power output was related to the value of the apparent spring constant of the support leg in the eccentric phase. The spring constant in the eccentric phase increased with the velocity of motion in running, the long jump take-off and the triple jump. This suggests that it may be possible to use this parameter as a measure of mechanical performance, as it may reflect the combined elasticity of muscles, tendons, and bones.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the value of real-time sonoelastography (RTS) of salivary glands for the diagnosis and assessment of glandular damage in primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS). After institutional review board approval, 45 pSS patients, 24 sicca patients and 11 healthy controls were investigated prospectively. Questionnaires were completed and Saxon and Schirmer tests and routine blood tests carried out in all patients. All patients underwent B-mode ultrasonography and RTS of parotid and submandibular glands. Abnormal findings were graded from 0 to 48 and from 0 to 16, respectively. Sialoscintigraphy was done according to a routine protocol; scoring ranged from 0 to 12. Statistical analysis comprised receiver operating characteristic curve and multivariate regression analysis. Patients with pSS had higher B-mode (median score = 25 [range: 2–44] vs. 9 [1–20], p < 0.001) and RTS (6.5 [2–13] versus 4 [1–9], p < 0.001) scores than controls with sicca syndrome, yielding areas under the curve of 0.83 and 0.85 (p < 0.05 each), respectively for pSS diagnosis. In cases with an inconclusive B-mode ultrasonography result, RTS (cutoff score: ≥6) led to a sensitive (66.7%) and specific (85.7%) classification of patients and sicca controls. In multivariate regression analysis, RTS (regression coefficient = –0.48, p = 0.005), but not B-mode ultrasonography, reflected impaired salivary gland function according to the Saxon test, whereas none of the subjective measures of dryness or discomfort were related to ultrasonography results. B-mode and RTS results were both associated with sialoscintigraphy scores (regression coefficient = 0.66, p < 0.001, and regression coefficient = 0.55, p = 0.001, respectively). Reproducibility of B-mode ultrasonography and RTS was good, with intra-class correlation coefficients of 0.93 (95% confidence interval: 0.57–0.98) and 0.93 (95% confidence interval: 0.79–0.98), respectively. In summary, RTS might be a useful adjunct to B-mode ultrasonography for diagnosis and assessment of salivary gland impairment in primary Sjögren’s syndrome.  相似文献

PurposeTo develop and evaluate a computer-assisted method of quantifying five-point elasticity scoring system based on ultrasound real-time elastography (RTE), for classifying benign and malignant breast lesions, with pathologic results as the reference standard.Materials and methodsConventional ultrasonography (US) and RTE images of 145 breast lesions (67 malignant, 78 benign) were performed in this study. Each lesion was automatically contoured on the B-mode image by the level set method and mapped on the RTE image. The relative elasticity value of each pixel was reconstructed and classified into hard or soft by the fuzzy c-means clustering method. According to the hardness degree inside lesion and its surrounding tissue, the elasticity score of the RTE image was computed in an automatic way. Visual assessments of the radiologists were used for comparing the diagnostic performance. Histopathologic examination was used as the reference standard. The Student's t test and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis were performed for statistical analysis.ResultsConsidering score 4 or higher as test positive for malignancy, the diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were 93.8% (136/145), 92.5% (62/67), 94.9% (74/78), 93.9% (62/66), and 93.7% (74/79) for the computer-assisted scheme, and 89.7% (130/145), 85.1% (57/67), 93.6% (73/78), 92.0% (57/62), and 88.0% (73/83) for manual assessment. Area under ROC curve (Az value) for the proposed method was higher than the Az value for visual assessment (0.96 vs. 0.93).ConclusionComputer-assisted quantification of classical five-point scoring system can significantly eliminate the interobserver variability and thereby improve the diagnostic confidence of classifying the breast lesions to avoid unnecessary biopsy.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze the features of non-mass breast lesions (NMLs) on B-mode ultrasound (US), color Doppler US, strain elastography (SE) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and to develop a multimode ultrasonic method for NML differentiation. Seventy-one NMLs were included in this retrospective study. Binary logistic regression was used to identify the independent risk factors. Pathology results were used as the standard criterion. Microcalcification on US, high stiffness on SE and hyper-enhanced intensity on CEUS were identified as features correlated with malignancy. A multimode method to evaluate NMLs based on the logistic regression was developed. The sensitivity and specificity for US, US?+?Doppler, US?+?SE, US?+?CEUS and the multimode method were 100% and 29%, 92.5% and 41.9%, 97.5% and 58.1%, 90.0% and 58.1% and 95.0% and 77.4%, respectively. The accuracy of these methods was 69.0%, 70.4%, 80.2%, 76.1% and 87.3%, respectively. The multimode ultrasonic method is simple and exhibited high diagnostic performance, which might be helpful for predicting the potential malignancy of NMLs.  相似文献

An ultrasound elasticity microscope was used to map 3-D strain volume in an ex vivo porcine cornea to illustrate its ability to measure the mechanical properties of this tissue. Mechanical properties of the cornea play an important role in its function and, therefore, also in ophthalmic diseases such as kerataconus and corneal ectasia. The ultrasound elasticity microscope combines a tightly focused high-frequency transducer with confocal scanning to produce high-quality speckle over the entire volume of tissue. This system and the analysis were able to generate volume maps of compressional strain in all three directions for porcine corneal tissue, more information than any previous study has reported. Strain volume maps indicated features of the cornea and mechanical behavior as expected. These results constitute a step toward better understanding of corneal mechanics and better treatment of corneal diseases.  相似文献
