Involvement of extracellular matrix (ECM) components in aging and age-related neurodegeneration is not well understood. The role of hyaluronan (HA), a major extracellular matrix glycosaminoglycan, in malignancy and inflammation is gaining new understanding. In particular, the differential biological effects of high molecular weight (HMW-HA) and low molecular weight hyaluronan (LMW-HA), and the mechanism behind such differences are being uncovered. Tightly regulated in the brain, HA can have diverse effects on cellular development, growth and degeneration. In this review, we summarize the homeostasis and signaling of HA in healthy tissue, discuss its distribution and ontogeny in the central nervous system (CNS), summarize evidence for its involvement in age-related neurodegeneration and Alzheimer Disease (AD), and assess the potential of HA as a therapeutic target in the CNS.  相似文献

The freeze–thaw resistant performance of a tunnel fireproof coating (TFC) has an important impact on bonding property and durability. The influence of redispersible emulsion powder, polypropylene fiber and air-entraining agent on TFCs was studied. Transverse fundamental frequency and ultrasonic sound velocity were used to evaluate the damage degree of TFC, and the mechanism was revealed by SEM and pore structure. The results show that the most beneficial effect on bond strength of TFC is redispersible emulsion powder, followed by air-entraining agent, and then polypropylene fiber. After freeze–thaw cycles, the cumulative pore volume of micropores in the TFC increases obviously, while the porosity of macropores does not change significantly. A prediction model was proposed, which can calculate the bond strength from the damage degree of TFC under freeze–thaw cycles. The achievement can promote the application of TFC in cold regions.  相似文献

In this study, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) microparticles having pH-sensitive properties were loaded with sodium lignosulfonate (SLS), a corrosion inhibitor. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV–VIS spectrophotometer (UV-vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and attenuated total reflection-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) were applied to evaluate the properties of the synthetic microparticles. This material could lead to the release of corrosion inhibitor under different pH conditions of the aqueous media. However, the extent of release of the corrosion inhibitor in the acidic media was higher, leading to enhanced shielding effect of the Q235 steel. These microparticles can serve as anti-corrosion additive for epoxy resin-coated Q235 steel. Electrochemical experiments were used to assess the anti-corrosive ability of the epoxy coatings in simulated concrete pore (SCP) solution, confirming the superior corrosion inhibition of the epoxy coating via incorporation of 5 wt % calcium carbonate microparticles loaded with SLS (SLS/CaCO3). The physical properties of coating specimens were characterized by water absorption, contact angle, adhesion, and pencil hardness mechanical tests.  相似文献

The lubricating proteoglycan, lubricin, facilitates the remarkable low friction and wear properties of articular cartilage in the synovial joints of the body. Lubricin lines the joint surfaces and plays a protective role as a boundary lubricant in sliding contact; decreased expression of lubricin is associated with cartilage degradation and the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis. An unmet need for early osteoarthritis treatment is the development of therapeutic molecules that mimic lubricin function and yet are also resistant to enzymatic degradation common in the damaged joint. Here, we engineered a lubricin mimic (mLub) that is less susceptible to enzymatic degradation and binds to the articular surface to reduce friction. mLub was synthesized using a chondroitin sulfate backbone with type II collagen and hyaluronic acid (HA) binding peptides to promote interaction with the articular surface and synovial fluid constituents. In vitro and in vivo characterization confirmed the binding ability of mLub to isolated type II collagen and HA, and to the cartilage surface. Following trypsin treatment to the cartilage surface, application of mLub, in combination with purified or commercially available hyaluronan, reduced the coefficient of friction, and adhesion, to control levels as assessed over macro-to micro-scales by rheometry and atomic force microscopy. In vivo studies demonstrate an mLub residency time of less than 1 week. Enhanced lubrication by mLub reduces surface friction and adhesion, which may suppress the progression of degradation and cartilage loss in the joint. mLub therefore shows potential for treatment in early osteoarthritis following injury.  相似文献

PurposeTo facilitate decision-making in authorship positions, the International Committee of Medical Journal Editor (ICMJE) developed a guideline that stipulates criteria authors should meet in order to merit authorship. Authors who did not meet these criteria and still enlisted as authors, are called ‘honorary’ authors. In this study, the prevalence and characteristics of honorary authorship (HA) is assessed in the field of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.MethodsA survey was distributed among corresponding authors of articles published in 2019 in six Orthopedics-dedicated journals.Results479 of the 1392 approached authors responded, leading to a response rate of 34.4%. 91.6% of the respondents were aware of the ICMJE guidelines, whereas 67.8% were aware of the issue of HA. Overall, the prevalence of guideline-based HA was 41.9%, while the prevalence of self-perceived HA was 14.7%. Having a senior member automatically enlisted as author on the departments, was associated with a higher rate of guideline-based HA (OR 5.03) and self-perceived HA (OR 3.31).ConclusionsThe prevalence of HA in the field of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine is high, but comparable to other medical fields. Transparency in authorship decision-making is crucial to maintain liability in scientific articles.  相似文献

Hydatidiform moles (HM) are characterized by an abnormal proliferating trophoblast with a potential for a malignant transformation. Similar to other human tumors, trophoblastic pathogenesis is likely a multistep process involving several molecular and genetic alterations. The study was performed to investigate the expression patterns of c-erbB-2 and Bcl-2 oncoproteins, p53, p21WAF1/CIP1 and p63 tumor suppressor proteins and Ki-67 cell proliferation marker in HM.We conducted a retrospective study of 220 gestational products, including 39 hydropic abortions (HA), 41 partial HM (PHM) and 140 complete HM (CHM). The expression of c-erbB-2, Bcl-2, p53, p21WAF1/CIP1, p63 and Ki-67 was investigated by immunohistochemistry on archival tissues. c-erbB-2 expression was observed in three PHM and 10 CHM. Bcl-2 immunostaining was significantly higher in PHM (61%) and CHM (70.7%) compared with HA (7.7%, p?=? 0.001 and p?<? 0.0001, respectively). p53 expression was stronger in CHM (73.6%) compared with PHM (24.4%, p < 0.0001) and HA (12.8%, p < 0.0001). p21WAF1/CIP1 staining was observed as well in molar and non-molar gestations (p?>? 0.05). p63 immunoexpression was significantly described in CHM (85.7%) and PHM (78%) compared with HA (10.2%, p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0001, respectively). Ki-67 was significantly expressed in CHM (72.1%) compared with HA (46.2%, p = 0.005).Altered expression of Bcl-2, p53, p63 and Ki-67 reflects the HM pathological development. Immunohistochemical analysis is beneficial to recognize the HM molecular and pathogenic mechanisms. Furthermore, it could serve as a useful adjunct to conventional methods for refining HM diagnosis.  相似文献

The world's oceans are polluted by a continuous inflow of plastic. Plastic fragments finally into microplastic, which can be taken up, for example by plankton, and subsequently by the entire ocean food web. An approach to reduce plastic pollution constitutes the accelerated microplastic degradation in marine environments. TiO2 (anatase) is commonly used as an oxidative photocatalyst and well known to catalyze the degradation of organic compounds upon UV irradiation.In this study, a selective activation of TiO2 (anatase) particles encapsulated by Ca- or Sr-polyphosphate is presented. The TiO2 polyphosphate core-shell particles are envisaged as additives in plastic products. The highly concentrated cations from seawater, viz. Na+ and Mg2+, displace the Ca2+ or Sr2+ cations from the polyphosphate shell. As a result, the polyphosphate coating dissolves and thus the photocatalytically active TiO2 core is released. The stability of the TiO2 polyphosphate particles in potable water and the seawater activated disintegration of methylene blue, methyl methacrylate, terephtalic acid, and poly(vinyl alcohol) was shown. It has been demonstrated, that the sweetwater stable polyphosphate coating degrades in the presence of seawater, which could be monitored by the activation of the TiO2 (anatase) photocatalyst.  相似文献

We demonstrate the coating of tablets using an injection molding (IM) process that has advantage of being solvent free and can provide precision coat features. The selected core tablets comprising 10% w/w griseofulvin were prepared by an integrated hot melt extrusion-injection molding (HME-IM) process. Coating trials were conducted on a vertical injection mold machine. Polyethylene glycol and polyethylene oxide based hot melt extruded coat compositions were used. Tablet coating process feasibility was successfully demonstrated using different coating mold designs (with both overlapping and non-overlapping coatings at the weld) and coat thicknesses of 150 and 300?μm. The resultant coated tablets had acceptable appearance, seal at the weld, and immediate drug release profile (with an acceptable lag time). Since IM is a continuous process, this study opens opportunities to develop HME-IM continuous processes for transforming powder to coated tablets.  相似文献
