Role Involvement and Well-Being in Middle-Aged Women

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The aim of this research was to shed light on the relation of social role experiences and health to well-being outcomes of 198 middle-aged (40–55 years old) Swiss women living in various familial contexts (double-track women, i.e., partnered working mothers, homemakers, single mothers, single women).

Results: Our results revealed that the way roles were experienced was primarily a function of a specific living context and satisfying social resources. Double-track women and homemakers showed the highest social role satisfaction rates and had better health and well-being outcomes than other women. Common to all groups was a considerable difference between actual and desired role investment.

Discussion: The findings are discussed in terms of a resource-oriented model of well-being.

Assessing the economic benefits of vaccines based on the health investment life course framework: A review of a broader approach to evaluate malaria vaccination

BackgroundEconomic evaluations have routinely understated the net benefits of vaccination by not including the full range of economic benefits that accrue over the lifetime of a vaccinated person. Broader approaches for evaluating benefits of vaccination can be used to more accurately calculate the value of vaccination.MethodologyThis paper reflects on the methodology of one such approach – the health investment life course approach – that looks at the impact of vaccine investment on lifetime returns. The role of this approach on vaccine decision-making will be assessed using the malaria health investment life course model example.ResultsWe describe a framework that measures the impact of a health policy decision on government accounts over many generations. The methodological issues emerging from this approach are illustrated with an example from a recently completed health investment life course analysis of malaria vaccination in Ghana. Beyond the results, various conceptual and practical challenges of applying this framework to Ghana are discussed in this paper.Discussion and conclusionsThe current framework seeks to understand how disease and available technologies can impact a range of economic parameters such as labour force participation, education, healthcare consumption, productivity, wages or economic growth, and taxation following their introduction. The framework is unique amongst previous economic models in malaria because it considers future tax revenue for governments. The framework is complementary to cost-effectiveness and budget impact analysis. The intent of this paper is to stimulate discussion on how existing and new methodology can add to knowledge regarding the benefits from investing in new and underutilized vaccines.     

Private Investment Purchase and Nursing Home Financial Health

Objective

To explore the impact of nursing home acquisition by private investment firms on nursing home costs, revenue, and overall financial health.

Data Sources

Merged data from the Medicare Cost Reports and the Online Survey, Certification, and Reporting system for the period 1998–2010.

Study Design

Regression specification incorporating facility and time fixed effects.

Principal Findings

We found little impact on the financial health of nursing homes following purchase by private investment companies. However, our findings did suggest that private investment firms acquired nursing home chains in good financial health, possibly to derive profit from the company’s real estate holdings.

Conclusions

Private investment acquired facilities are an important feature of today’s nursing home sector. Although we did not observe a negative impact on the financial health of nursing homes, this development raises important issues about ownership oversight and transparency for the entire nursing home sector.

探索利用外部专家开展信息系统投资审计的方法

本文通过利用外部信息技术专家对信息系统工程投资审计的案例,探索对公立医院信息系统软件开发项目实施投资价格评估的审计方法,并将审计结果加以利用,建立长效机制,制定针对信息系统开发的合同模板,取得软件开发的知识产权,引进监理服务,强化对软件开发公司的全过程质量管理,形成对信息系统投资审计的新模式。
