This study explores the role that digital media technologies play in adolescents' experiences of friendship and identity. The author draws on findings from in-depth interviews with 32 adolescents (15 girls, 17 boys) ages 13–18 (M = 15.5 years) attending one of seven secondary schools in Bermuda. The adolescents were asked to describe the nature of their online exchanges with friends and the value they ascribe to these conversations. A thematic analysis of their responses revealed that online peer communications promote adolescents' sense of belonging and self-disclosure, two important peer processes that support identity development during adolescence. At the same time, the unique features of computer-mediated communication shape adolescents' experiences of these processes in distinct ways. Gender and age differences show that adolescents' online peer communications are not uniform; the characteristics that distinguish adolescents offline also shape their online activities.  相似文献

We investigated behavioral and neural mechanisms in the relation between social media use (SMU) and self-concept, as well as longitudinal developmental outcomes. Adolescents and young adults (N = 150, 11–21 years old at T1) rated themselves on 60 traits in the academic, physical and prosocial domain, and also indicated how they thought peers would judge them (reflected-peer-judgements). Longitudinal questionnaires (1- and 2-year follow-up) were collected to assess positive (prosocial behavior, self-concept clarity) and negative (clinical symptoms) long-term outcomes. Results indicated that heavier self-reported SMU was linked with lower difference scores between self-judgements and reflected-peer-judgements. Lower SMU was related to more positive ratings from self-judgements vs. reflected-peer-judgements. SMU was also associated with less positive self-concept, particularly in the academic domain (boys and girls) and physical domain (girls). Neurally, increased SMU was linked to heightened mPFC-activity during self-judgements compared to reflected-peer-judgements, and increased activity during physical compared to academic and prosocial self-judgements. Longitudinal analyses indicated no evidence for long-term effects of social media use, self/reflected-peer-difference scores and mPFC-activity on clinical symptoms, prosocial behavior or self-concept clarity. This study highlights the complex relationship between social media use and wellbeing and future research is needed to confirm the lack of long-term effects.  相似文献

IntroductionAlthough homosexuality is a subject often addressed by the media, little is said about homosexuality in adolescents who are particularly affected by the question of sexual orientation. This work aims to study the mental health of adolescents who report being exclusively attracted to members of the same sex. We explore the evidence for an association between homosexuality and depression, suicide attempts, and consulting a psychiatrist or a psychologist.MethodsWe used data from the cross-sectional study “Adolescent Portraits – A Multicenter Epidemiological Survey in Schools in 2013” (CHU Fondation Vallée, Inserm CESP U1018). Data were gathered through the use of an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire (348 questions) given to students between the “4e” and “terminale school” years (comparable to the 8th and 12th grade in the U.S. education system) in three contrasting French geographical areas. The risk of depression was measured using the Adolescent Depression Rating Scale (ADRS).ResultsThe results reflect the survey responses provided by 15,235 young people. Of these, 1.5 % reported only being attracted to members of the same sex (homosexual group). This group contained twice as many girls as boys. Students who did not report sexual attraction, who reported bisexual attraction, or who did not answer the question were excluded from the results (830 students). In the homosexual group, 24 % presented with depression versus 11.5 % of those attracted exclusively to members of the opposite sex (heterosexual group). There is also a significant difference between sexes: 13.2 % of boys in the homosexual group were depressed compared to 29.3 % of girls in the same group; 6.7 % of boys in the heterosexual group reported being depressed versus 16.1 % of girls in the same group. In the heterosexual group, 10.7 % of respondents reported having already made at least one suicide attempt versus 20.7 % of those in the homosexual group. There was a difference according to sex, since 6.3 % of boys in the heterosexual group had a history of attempted suicide versus 14.9 % of girls in the same group. This gap disappeared completely within the homosexual group, as 21.4 % of boys and 20.4 % of girls had already made at least one suicide attempt at the time of the survey. Depressed adolescents in the homosexual group also reported a higher number of previous suicide attempts than those in the heterosexual group (46.9 % versus 31.6 %). In terms of sex, 25.3 % of depressed boys in the heterosexual group made at least one suicide attempt versus 34.1 % of girls. In the homosexual group, 44.4 % of depressed boys reported having made at least one suicide attempt versus 47.5 % of depressed girls. Adolescents in the homosexual group were significantly more likely to report having consulted a psychiatrist or psychologist than those in the heterosexual group (14.6 % versus 6.5 %), regardless of sex (16.7 % versus 4.7 % for boys; 13.5 % versus 8.2 % for girls). This difference was also found among depressed subjects (26.0 % in the homosexual group versus 15.4 % in the heterosexual group). Sexual activity (having already had sex) was higher in the homosexual group than in the heterosexual group (53.7 % versus 37.5 %), and this difference remained significant after adjusting for age. Fifty percent of the sexually active homosexual respondents reported having engaged in sexual activity of a homosexual nature versus 0.7 % of sexually active heterosexual respondents. In the homosexual group, mental suffering appeared to be more severe among sexually active subjects, in terms of dark thoughts (64 % versus 46 %) and a prior history of attempted suicide (29.3 % versus 10 %), but not in terms of depression (27.9 % versus 18.9 %; NS).ConclusionYoung people who reported being exclusively attracted to members of the same sex presented a higher level of mental distress compared to those who reported being attracted to members of the opposite sex. This was especially the case for boys. These findings led to the identification of risk and protective factors that can inform the development of appropriate preventive measures.  相似文献

A summary is provided what the fields of personality and developmental psychology had to offer each other the past decade, reflected in the eleven contributions enclosed in this special issue. Strengths and opportunities to further advance the field are identified, including the extension of general trait with maladaptive trait models, the use of alternative methods to assess personality, and the adoption of configural approaches to describe traits in individuals, beyond more traditional person-centered approaches.  相似文献

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively examine physical, neurological, and psychological health in a U.S. sample of 180 infants at age 17. Design and Methods. The World Health Organization International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health model framed the health‐related domains and contextual factors. Assessments included growth, chronic conditions, neurological status, and psychological health. Results. Physical health, growth, and neurological outcomes were poorer in the preterm groups. Minor neurological impairment was related to integrative function. Preterm survivors reported higher rates of depression, anxiety, and inattention/hyperactivity. Practice Implications. Complex health challenges confront preterm survivors at late adolescence, suggesting the necessity of continued health surveillance.  相似文献

Approaches for the development of preclinical models of depression extensively use adult and male animals owing to the discrepancies arising out of the hormonal flux in adult females and adolescents during attainment of puberty. Thus the increased vulnerability of females towards clinical depression and anxiety-related disorders remains incompletely understood. Development of clinical models of depression in adolescent females is essential in order to evolve effective treatment strategies for adolescent depression. In the present study, we have examined the anxiety and depressive-like profiles in a putative animal model of childhood depression, the Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rat, during early adolescence (∼postnatal day 30) and mid-adolescence (∼postnatal day 40). Female adolescent WKY rats, tested on a series of behavioural tests modelling anxiety- and depressive-like behaviours with age-matched Wistars as controls, demonstrated marked differences during early adolescence in a strain- and age-specific manner. Anxiety indices were obtained from exposure to the elevated plus maze, where social communication vide 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations was also assessed, while immobility and other parameters in the forced swim test were screened for depressive-like profiles. Sucrose preference, used as a measure of anhedonia in animals, was lower in WKYs at both ages tested and decreased with age. Anxiety-related behaviours were prominent in WKY rats only during early adolescence. WKY female rats are anxious during early adolescence and exhibit anhedonia as a core symptom of depression during early- and mid-adolescence, thus indicating that inclusion of female animals in preclinical trials is essential and will contribute to gender-based approaches to diagnosis and treatment of adolescent depression in females.  相似文献

Sleep is crucial for psychological functioning and daily performance. Both lay and scientific opinion hold that physical activity encourages restorative sleep. However, research on this in adolescence is limited. The aim of the present study was to compare sleep-EEG patterns of vigorous exercisers and controls. Twelve adolescent male football players (14 h of vigorous exercise per week) and 12 controls (1.5 h of vigorous exercise per week) matched for gender, age (about 16 years), and educational level, took part in the study. Sleep-EEG registration was performed following a day without exercise. Sleep-EEG analyses revealed that, compared to controls, the football players showed greater sleep efficiency, shortened sleep onset latency, less awakenings after sleep onset, more stage 4, and less REM sleep. Importantly, this pattern of results emerged following a day without exercise. Moreover, vigorous football players reported better daily performance and displayed less weeknight (Sunday to Thursday) to weekend night (Friday and Saturday nights) variation. Findings suggest that for the football players, vigorous exercise seemed to lead to longer-lasting electrophysiological change in brain activity irrespective of acute bouts of exercise.  相似文献

Considerable heterogeneity exists in adolescent substance use development. To most effectively prevent use, distinct trajectories of use must be identified as well as differential associations with predictors of use, such as leisure experience. The current study used a person-centered approach to identify distinct substance use trajectories and how leisure is associated with trajectory classes. Data came from a larger efficacy trial of 2.249 South African high school students who reported substance use at any time across 8 waves. Growth mixture modeling was used to identify developmental trajectories of substance use and the influence of healthy leisure. Results identified three increasing and one stable substance use trajectory and subjective healthy leisure served to protect against use. This study is the first of its kind to focus on a sample of South African adolescents and serves to develop a richer understanding of substance use development and the role of healthy leisure.  相似文献
